The Role of Picturebooks in Supporting the Mathematical Knowledge of Preschool Teacher Candidates

    No full text
Is children's literature only beneficial to children? Or do the benefits of children's literature also extend to the knowledge and mathematical skills of the teachers who employ it and reflect on it? This study seeks to investigate the role of picturebooks on the mathematical knowledge of preschool teacher candidates. For this purpose, in-depth examinations of how picturebooks can be used in teaching preschool mathematics and children's literature. As well as the changes in the content knowledge of the teacher candidates, were done by conducting focus group interviews with teacher candidates. This is a qualitative case study consisting of focus group discussions in which high-level knowledge sharing and production can be achieved through interaction and associations. In the research, 11 picturebooks were discussed, and 8 teacher candidates participated in 6 focus group interviews lasting a total of 338 min throughout a 7 week period. The study's findings have demonstrated that through children's literature, teacher candidates' misconceptions about measuring length can be revealed and eliminated without the need for another source, with discussions based on consciously and systematically selected picturebooks. Thus, it can be said that picturebooks act as a catalyst for the studies that aim to enhance the mathematical content knowledge of teacher candidates. The study has also observed that picturebooks can comprehensively address the fundamental concepts of length measurement.Bayburt University Scientific Research Projects Coordinatorship [2022/69002-01]; Bayburt UniversitesiThis research was supported by Bayburt University Scientific Research Projects Coordinatorship. Research of the crack problem of a functionally graded layer

    No full text
In this study, the two-dimensional crack problem was investigated by using the finite element method (FEM)based ANSYS package program and the artificial neural network (ANN) -based multilayer perceptron (MLP) method. For this purpose, a half -infinite functionally graded (FG) layer with a crack pressed through two rigid blocks was analyzed using FEM and ANN. Mass forces and friction were neglected in the solution. To control the validity of the crack problem model exercised, the acquired results were compared with a study in the literature. In addition, FEM and ANN results were checked using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2), and a well agreement was found. Numerical solutions were made considering different geometric parameters and material properties. The stress intensity factor (SIF) was examined for these values, and the results were presented. Consequently, it is concluded that the considered non -dimensional quantities have a noteworthy influence on the SIF. Also FEM and ANN can be logical alternative methods to time-consuming analytical solutions if used correctly

A case study comparing seismic retrofitting techniques for a historically significant masonry building's minaret

    No full text
Historical masonry structures are extremely susceptible to earthquakes due to their characteristic features. Seismic performance and corresponding damage patterns vary between these buildings. Even though the main structure was undamaged, many minarets suffered damage or collapsed due to the transmission of large forces from the main mass to the minaret and the abrupt changes in cross-section due to the geometry of the minaret. This study uses an ancient masonry mosque as a case study, whose minaret and main building are constructed as a single structure. The mosque's minaret under seismic excitation is the focus of this study. The adopted model is called Alaeddin Bey Mosque in Mus,, T & uuml;rkiye. The seismic performance assessment of the minaret, considering various retrofitting options, is mainly based on four critical parameters: base shear, acceleration, displacement, and maximum tensile forces in all three dimensions. The analyzed retrofitting methods include base isolation located in the basement of the mosque, viscous dampers placed only in the upper part of the minaret, Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer fabric fitted to only the minaret, and steel plates applied to only the minaret. Representative structural models of the mosque have been modelled with SAP2000 software. The main novelty of this study is the use of viscous dampers in the minaret. It is the first time a design methodology has been introduced for viscous damper applications in minarets. This methodology aims to prevent local damage to the minaret due to the forces generated by the dampers, while also considering the constraints of limited internal space within the minaret. The finding of this study shows that viscous damper application yields significantly better results compared to the application of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer fabric and steel plates. However, although base isolation reduces the tensile stress values throughout the entire mosque to levels well below the material's strength, viscous damper application in the minaret significantly reduces tensile stresses only in the minaret. As a result, viscous dampers are recommended for damage reduction in the minaret only. Otherwise, base isolation should be considered for reducing stress values throughout the entire mosque including the minaret. This study contributes towards the development of new seismic retrofitting methods for historic masonry buildings 'minaret

    No full text
This study aims to identify a cyanidin-3-rutinoside chloride that exhibits both photovoltaic performance and nonlinear optical properties, which may be utilized in the field of optoelectronics. Prior to investigating these properties, the stable structure must be determined. For this purpose, its conformational analysis is performed by the Molecular Force Field method with the spartan program. The exact nature of the stable configuration has been ascertained by empirical evidence. The energy of the stable configuration is -1654184.76 kcal/mol, and its dipole moment is 9.94 Debye. Cyanidin-3-rutinoside chloride has been investigated using experimental FT-IR and Raman spectroscopies. Meanwhile, the DFT method at the B3LYP/6-311 + + G(d, p) level was employed in order to study the simulated FT-IR and Raman spectra, the HOMO-LUMO analysis, the molecular electrostatic potentials (MEP), and the non-linear optical (NLO) characteristics of the title molecule. The HOMO and LUMO energies are - 6.45 and - 3.64 electron volts (eV), respectively, with a gap value of 2.81 eV. Additionally, the title compound's open-circuit voltage, the transition density matrix light-harvesting efficiency, driving force, and binding energy were calculated with by taking photovoltaic cell properties into account. Furthermore, investigations of hole reorganization energy, electron reorganization energy, and total reorganization energy were carried out at the B3LYP/6-31G(d, p) level for the cyanidin-3-rutinoside chloride of interest. In addition, density of state calculations and NBO were made at the B3LYP/6-31G(d, p) level. No full text
AimThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of motivational interviewing based on the trans-theoretical model promoting physical activity in older adults.MethodsA randomized controlled trial study was conducted with 117 older adults (intervention group: 58, and control group: 59) between April and November 2019. The data were collected via a questionnaire, trans-theoretical model scales, the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly, the Katz Activities of Daily Living scale and a pedometer. The 24-week intervention consisted of regular motivational interviewing. The control group received usual care at the family health centre.ResultsFollowing the intervention, the Intervention Group showed significant improvements Exercise Processes of Change Scale, Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale and Perceived Benefits of the Decisional Balance Scale for Exercise. There was a significant difference between the groups in terms of stages of change. In the Intervention Group, 81.5% were in the contemplation stage in the pre-test, while in the post-test, 70.4% had transitioned to the action stage. In contrast, in the control group, 62.5% were in the contemplation stage initially, but in the post-test, only 9.3% had reached the action stage. The mean number of step counts increased significantly in favour of the Intervention Group, as did the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly total score.ConclusionThe trial indicated that after the trans-theoretical model-based motivational interviewing, the stages of change among the older adults improved, as did their exercise behaviours. It is recommended that the trans-theoretical model and motivational interviewing be used by nurses to improve healthy lifestyle stage behaviours in older adults. What is already known about this topic? Physical immobility ranks fourth among the leading risk factors for mortality globally. Older adults constitute the age group which leads the most sedentary life in society and is most affected by physical inactivity. In Turkey, one out of every two people undertakes insufficient physical activity, and this rate increases with advancing age. What this paper adds? Nurse-led motivational interviewing based on the trans-theoretical model was effective in increasing the physical activity levels of the older adults. The implications of this paper: It is recommended that the trans-theoretical model and motivational interviewing should be used by nurses to improve healthy lifestyle behaviours in older adults. It is recommended that studies be conducted to assess the effectiveness of interventions aimed at promoting physical activity in older adults via both qualitative and quantitative methods

    No full text
The present study adapted the General Attitudes toward Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS) to Turkish and investigated the impact of personality traits, artificial intelligence anxiety, and demographics on attitudes toward artificial intelligence. The sample consisted of 259 female (74%) and 91 male (26%) individuals aged between 18 and 51 (Mean = 24.23). Measures taken were demographics, the Ten-Item Personality Inventory, the Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale, and the General Attitudes toward Artificial Intelligence Scale. The Turkish GAAIS had good validity and reliability. Hierarchical Multiple Linear Regression Analyses showed that positive attitudes toward artificial intelligence were significantly predicted by the level of computer use (beta = 0.139, p = 0.013), level of knowledge about artificial intelligence (beta = 0.119, p = 0.029), and AI learning anxiety (beta = -0.172, p = 0.004). Negative attitudes toward artificial intelligence were significantly predicted by agreeableness (beta = 0.120, p = 0.019), AI configuration anxiety (beta = -0.379, p < 0.001), and AI learning anxiety (beta = -0.211, p < 0.001). Personality traits, AI anxiety, and demographics play important roles in attitudes toward AI. Results are discussed in light of the previous research and theoretical explanations

Dijitalleşen Realite Şovlara ve Gösteri Toplumuna Performatif Yaklaşım: RealiTuber ve RealiToker

    No full text

Especially for new-generation buildings, since esthetic appearance as well as thermal comfort is essential, glass materials have been widely used as building materials in buildings. Due to its superior optical properties, it is preferred in buildings, especially in window areas. On the other hand, the heat losses and gains and light transmission rates from the glass used in the building envelopes and especially in the window areas are very effective on the energy efficiency of the buildings. Therefore, innovative glass technologies are developed and used in new smart buildings. In this context, the most preferred glass technologies are laminated glass and tempered glass for the building envelope. For window areas, it can be listed as low emissivity glasses, high-technology glasses, vacuum glasses, glasses with phase change materials and insulated glasses. The use of new-generation glass technologies instead of traditional glass technologies provides significant benefits to users regarding economic, environmental, and social effects. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd.
