The contribution of starbursts and normal galaxies to infrared luminosity functions at z < 2
We present a parameter-less approach to predict the shape of the infrared
(IR) luminosity function (LF) at redshifts z < 2. It requires no tuning and
relies on only three observables: (1) the redshift evolution of the stellar
mass function for star-forming galaxies, (2) the evolution of the specific star
formation rate (sSFR) of main-sequence galaxies, and (3) the double-Gaussian
decomposition of the sSFR-distribution at fixed stellar mass into a
contribution (assumed redshift- and mass-invariant) from main-sequence and
starburst activity. This self-consistent and simple framework provides a
powerful tool for predicting cosmological observables: observed IR LFs are
successfully matched at all z < 2, suggesting a constant or only weakly
redshift-dependent contribution (8-14%) of starbursts to the star formation
rate density. We separate the contributions of main-sequence and starburst
activity to the global IR LF at all redshifts. The luminosity threshold above
which the starburst component dominates the IR LF rises from log(LIR/Lsun) =
11.4 to 12.8 over 0 < z < 2, reflecting our assumed (1+z)^2.8-evolution of sSFR
in main-sequence galaxies.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures & 1 table. Accepted for publication in ApJL. Minor

Effect of disorder on transport properties in a tight-binding model for lead halide perovskites
The hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite materials have emerged as
remarkable materials for photovoltaic applications. Their strengths include
good electric transport properties in spite of the disorder inherent in them.
Motivated by this observation, we analyze the effects of disorder on the energy
eigenstates of a tight-binding model of these materials. In particular, we
analyze the spatial extension of the energy eigenstates, which is quantified by
the inverse participation ratio. This parameter exhibits a tendency, and
possibly a phase transition, to localization as the on-site energy disorder
strength is increased. However, we argue that the disorder in the lead halide
perovskites corresponds to a point in the regime of highly delocalized states.
Our results also suggest that the electronic states of mixed-halide materials
tend to be more localized than those of pure materials, which suggests a weaker
tendency to form extended bonding states in the mixed-halide materials and is
therefore not favourable for halide mixing.Comment: 24 pages (preprint), 11 figure
Dedication Week at Hebron
Opening paragraph:
The country is the ideal location for a Christian academy. More especially is this true in the present day, when the unhealthy tendency is so irrestibly toward the pilin up of the population in the great cities. Hebron Academy, three miles from the railway station in West Minot, on one of the high hill summits of Oxford County, Maine, with the White Mountain range and Mt. Washington in full view forty-five miles away, could not be more beautifully situated.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/books_pubs/1170/thumbnail.jp
Terrestrial Isopods of Minnesota
Eight species of terrestrial isopods (sub-order Oniscoidea) were collected in Minnesota. Six of them had not been recorded previously. Observations on habitat, distribution, size and coloration were noted. An analytical key to the species within the state is included
