    Exploring the Awareness of Information Search Techniques Gained from Various Sources: A Study Among the Research Scholars of University of Kerala

    An exploratory approach of study is made to understand the extent and level of awareness of search techniques which is carried out among the research scholars of departments in University of Kerala. The preferred source of developing awareness in information search and access by the researchers need to identified for the quickly approach of the right documents for their research works. It is found to be very essential to conduct a study that is relevant in the present digital environment which results in the benefit of the researchers for suitably selecting the search techniques required for their topic. The study is conducted among the research scholars including both M.Phil. and Ph.D. of the ten faculties. The paper explores the level and extent of various sources where they gained awareness of search techniques. The stratified random sampling method is adopted here to collect the required data through questionnaire. The paper evidently collected data from the population of 830, where a sample of 656 Research Scholars of the ten faculties was selected for the study. The Mann-Whitney U test is applied to analyse the data set and the calculated statistical evidences did not support the formulated null hypothesis. The observed Mann-Whitney U test values are; Help Menu (U=44258.500), Online Tutorials (U=45249.000), Guidelines (U=46079.000), Class Room Trainings (U=46484.000), and Library User Programs (U=43946.000). Study enabled the authors to find an answer for the research question- Is there any significant differences between the Mean value of Gender and usage levels of sources

    Total free sugars, reducing sugars and glucose

    Carbohydrates in the tissues of crustaceans exist as free sugars and as bound with proteins (Saravanan, 1979). The free sugars in haemolymph consist of mono, di and oligosaccharides. All monosaccharides, maltose and its oligosaccharides constitute the total reducing sugars. Trehalose constitutes the non-reducing sugar fraction of the total free sugars. The total free sugars are estimated by Anthrone method and reducing sugar by Nelson-Somogyi method. The difference in the values obtained by these two methods indicates total non-reducing sugar value which is primarily trehalose in crustacean blood. The glucose can be determined by Glucose-oxidase method. The difference between values of glucose and reducing sugars would indicate the concentration of non-glucose reducing sugars

    Antibiotic sensitivity pattern to urinary tract infections in a tertiary care hospital in South India

    Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial illnesses and hence one of the most important indications for antibiotic treatment. Current knowledge of the common organisms implicated in causing UTI in the local community and surveillance to monitor the changes in susceptibility of uropathogens are imperative to ensure appropriate therapy. The study objectives were to assess the proportion of UTI caused by each of the common urinary pathogens, to study the antibiotic drug sensitivity patterns by analyzing the culture and sensitivity reports and to identify the drugs which would be potentially favourable candidates for empirical therapy in the study locale.Methods: This hospital based cross sectional study was done by collecting the data from case records of patients who attended OPD or were admitted with diagnosis of UTI during the study period.Results: Escherichia coli was the single most important cause of UTI, accounting for 70% of the infection among the studied subjects, amongst which 55% was extended spectrum beta-lactamase producing organisms. A pattern of increased susceptibility to higher antibiotics like ertapenem, tigecycline and decreased sensitivity to fluroquinolones was evident. In addition, nitrofurantoin was found to be one of the antibiotics to which most of the organisms were susceptible (85%) favouring its use in empirical therapy of UTI.Conclusions: The pattern of accentuated susceptibility to higher antibiotics in the face of declining trend in the sensitivity to commonly used antibiotics necessitates promoting awareness on the need for rational prescribing of antibiotics among clinicians

    In vivo administration of fucoidan from Turbinaria decurrens protects shrimps from white spot syndrome virus

    212-216Fucoidan was extracted from the brown seaweed Turbinaria decurrens by hot water extraction and characterized with HPLC, FTIR, NMR and GPC to study the impact against the White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), bacteria and fungi. Fucoidan was fed for shrimps along with the diet (before and after WSSV infection). In the end of the study, the survival percentage of shrimp was 51% (in the case of 5-8 g) and 97% (in the case of 12-15 g), respectively. Among the 10 bacterial pathogens and 7 fungal pathogens, fucoidan inhibited 2 bacterial pathogen such as S. aureus (0.26┬▒0.02 mm) and E. faecalis (1.3┬▒0.1 mm) and A. Niger (0.84 ┬▒ 0.03 mm) in fungal pathogens with clear zone of inhibition

    Seamless Vertical Handoff using Invasive Weed Optimization (IWO) algorithm for heterogeneous wireless networks

    AbstractHeterogeneous wireless networks are an integration of two different networks. For better performance, connections are to be exchanged among the different networks using seamless Vertical Handoff. The evolutionary algorithm of invasive weed optimization algorithm popularly known as the IWO has been used in this paper, to solve the Vertical Handoff (VHO) and Horizontal Handoff (HHO) problems. This integer coded algorithm is based on the colonizing behavior of weed plants and has been developed to optimize the system load and reduce the battery power consumption of the Mobile Node (MN). Constraints such as Receiver Signal Strength (RSS), battery lifetime, mobility, load and so on are taken into account. Individual as well as a combination of a number of factors are considered during decision process to make it more effective. This paper brings out the novel method of IWO algorithm for decision making during Vertical Handoff. Therefore the proposed VHO decision making algorithm is compared with the existing SSF and OPTG methods

    AbstractThe term big data has come into use in recent years. It is used to refer to the ever-increasing amount of data that organizations are storing, processing and analyzing. An Interesting fact with bigdata is that it differ in Volume, Variety, Velocity characteristics which makes it difficult to process using the conventional Database Management System. Hence there is a need of schema less Management Systems even this will never be complete solution to bigdata analysis since the processing has no focus on the semantic information as they consider only the structural information. Content Management System like Wikipedia stores and links huge amount of documents and files. There is lack of semantic linking and analysis in such systems even though this kind of CMS uses clusters and distributed framework for storing big data. The retrieved references for a particular article are random and enormous. In order to reduce the number of references for a selected content there is a need for semantic matching. In this paper we propose framework which make use of the distributed parallel processing capability of Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) to perform semantic analysis over the volume of documents (bigdata) to find the best matched source document from the collection source documents for the same virtual document

    Influence of Sea Surface Temperature on the Gonadal development of Sea urchin Temnopleurus toreumaticus from the Gulf of Mannar, South East Coast of India

    This study was conducted for a 20 months period from October 2013 to May 2015 in Gulf of Mannar, south east coast of India. During the investigation the abiotic factors viz., Sea surface temperature (SST), Daylight photoperiod and atmospheric temperature data were collected from International comprehensive Ocean Atmospheric Database (ICOADS) and the reproductive cycle of the sea urchin was studied from the monthly sampling of sea urchin collected from Vedalai landing centre in Gulf of Mannar. The gonads were studied to calculate Gonad index as well histological to categories them into four different stages of the development and this data was compared with abiotic factors to study the influence of it on the reproductive behaviour of sea urchin. The data were analyzed statistically through Pearson correlation and it was found negative between mean monthly gonad index and day length photoperiod, as well as with SST. This clearly indicates that the gonadal development in sea urchin is very much influenced by these two abiotic factors; however other nutritional factors might play greater role in the development gonad
