With the vast usage of network services, Security became an important issue for all network types. Various techniques emerged to grant network security; among them is Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS). Many extant NIDSs actively work against various intrusions, but there are still a number of performance issues including high false alarm rates, and numerous undetected attacks. To keep up with these attacks, some of the academic researchers turned towards machine learning (ML) techniques to create software that automatically predict intrusive and abnormal traffic, another approach is to utilize ML algorithms in enhancing Traditional NIDSs which is a more feasible solution since they are widely spread. To upgrade the detection rates of current NIDSs, thorough analyses are essential to identify where ML predictors outperform them. The first step is to provide assessment of most used NIDS worldwide, Snort, and comparing its performance with ML classifiers. This paper provides an empirical study to evaluate performance of Snort and four supervised ML classifiers, KNN, Decision Tree, Bayesian net and Naïve Bays against network attacks, probing, Brute force and DoS. By measuring Snort metric, True Alarm Rate, F-measure, Precision and Accuracy and compares them with the same metrics conducted from applying ML algorithms using Weka tool. ML classifiers show an elevated performance with over 99% correctly classified instances for most algorithms, While Snort intrusion detection system shows a degraded classification of about 25% correctly classified instances, hence identifying Snort weaknesses towards certain attack types and giving leads on how to overcome those weaknesses.  es

Satisfaction among students has become an essence particularly in an education industry. The industry is growing rapidly and competition is intense. Every organization is trying to become the most preferred education provider, especially in Malaysia and communication is the most important element to be stressed on to ensure students‟ sat-isfaction on services provided. Past researches indicated that, most meaning of conversational messages comes from non-verbal communication. Evaluation on students‟ perception on lecturers‟ paralanguage that would lead to their satisfaction to the services provided was examined. The results of the study illustrated that paralanguage which include vocal pitch, vocal loudness, pitch variation, pauses and fluency were shown to have an impact on students‟ satisfaction. Therefore, from this study, it can be inferred that students‟ in Malaysian universities are mostly observant on the vocal pitch of their lecturers when lectures are delivered to them. The present study caters for a wide variety of students and development professionals, especially those who are interested in non-verbal communication specifically paralanguage-related issues. It is highly hoped that the information gleaned from the present study may assist all service employees specifically in understanding better, the importance of paralanguage and its effects on students‟ satisfaction

Mitotic spindle association of TACC3 requires Aurora-A-dependent stabilization of a cryptic α-helix.

    Get PDF
Aurora-A regulates the recruitment of TACC3 to the mitotic spindle through a phospho-dependent interaction with clathrin heavy chain (CHC). Here, we describe the structural basis of these interactions, mediated by three motifs in a disordered region of TACC3. A hydrophobic docking motif binds to a previously uncharacterized pocket on Aurora-A that is blocked in most kinases. Abrogation of the docking motif causes a delay in late mitosis, consistent with the cellular distribution of Aurora-A complexes. Phosphorylation of Ser558 engages a conformational switch in a second motif from a disordered state, needed to bind the kinase active site, into a helical conformation. The helix extends into a third, adjacent motif that is recognized by a helical-repeat region of CHC, not a recognized phospho-reader domain. This potentially widespread mechanism of phospho-recognition provides greater flexibility to tune the molecular details of the interaction than canonical recognition motifs that are dominated by phosphate binding

A randomized controlled trial of mental health interventions for survivors of systematic violence in Kurdistan, Northern Iraq

BACKGROUND: Experiencing systematic violence and trauma increases the risk of poor mental health outcomes; few interventions for these types of exposures have been evaluated in low resource contexts. The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to assess the effectiveness of two psychotherapeutic interventions, Behavioral Activation Treatment for Depression (BATD) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), in reducing depression symptoms using a locally adapted and validated version of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist and dysfunction measured with a locally developed scale. Secondary outcomes included posttraumatic stress, anxiety, and traumatic grief symptoms. METHODS: Twenty community mental health workers, working in rural health clinics, were randomly assigned to training in one of the two interventions. The community mental health workers conducted baseline assessments, enrolled survivors of systematic violence based on severity of depression symptoms, and randomly assigned them to treatment or waitlist-control. Blinded community mental health workers conducted post-intervention assessments on average five months later. RESULTS: Adult survivors of systematic violence were screened (N = 732) with 281 enrolled in the trial; 215 randomized to an intervention (114 to BATD; 101 to CPT) and 66 to waitlist-control (33 to BATD; 33 to CPT). Nearly 70% (n = 149) of the intervention participants completed treatment and post-intervention assessments; 53 (80%) waitlist-controls completed post-intervention assessments. Estimated effect sizes for depression and dysfunction were 0.60 and 0.55 respectively, comparing BATD participants to all controls and 0.84 and 0.79 respectively, compared to BATD controls only. Estimated effect sizes for depression and dysfunction were 0.70 and 0.90 respectively comparing CPT participants to all controls and 0.44 and 0.63 respectively compared to CPT controls only. Using a permutation-based hypothesis test that is robust to the model assumptions implicit in regression models, BATD had significant effects on depression (p = .003) and dysfunction (p = .007), while CPT had a significant effect on dysfunction only (p = .004). CONCLUSIONS: Both interventions showed moderate to strong effects on most outcomes. This study demonstrates effectiveness of these interventions in low resource environments by mental health workers with limited prior experience. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.Gov NCT00925262. Background: In October 2015, 65 people came into direct contact with a healthcare worker presenting with a late reactivation of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the UK. Vaccination was offered to 45 individuals with an initial assessment of high exposure risk. Methods: Approval for rapid expanded access to the recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus–Zaire Ebola virus vaccine (rVSV-ZEBOV) as an unlicensed emergency medicine was obtained from the relevant authorities. An observational follow-up study was carried out for 1 year following vaccination. Results: 26/45 individuals elected to receive vaccination between October 10th and 11th 2015 following written informed consent. By day 14, 39% had seroconverted, rising to 87% by day 28 and 100% by 3 months, although these responses were not always sustained. Neutralising antibody responses were detectable in 36% by day 14 and 73% at 12 months. Common side effects included fatigue, myalgia, headache, arthralgia and fever. These were positively associated with glycoprotein (GP)-specific T-cell but not IgM or IgG antibody responses. No severe vaccine-related adverse events were reported. No-one exposed to the virus became infected. Conclusions: This paper reports the use of the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine given as an emergency intervention to individuals exposed to a patient presenting with a late reactivation of EVD. The vaccine was relatively well tolerated but a high percentage developed a fever ≄37.5oC necessitating urgent screening for Ebola virus and a small number developed persistent arthralgia
