    Leveraging Case Study Research: A Mechanism to Measure Teaching Effectiveness

    This article shares findings from a descriptive, multiple case study assessing graduate outcomes 2.5 years after the completion of a teacher education program. Case study was used as an alternative to value-added measures to holistically examine complex attributes of effective teaching. Mixed methods data collection included graduate and supervisor surveys, self and supervisor evaluation of skills and dispositions, interviews, and classroom observations. Results indicated participants effectively applied the knowledge, skills, and dispositions the program was designed to achieve in the areas of Learner and Learning, Content, Instructional Practice, and Professional Responsibility. Three major recommendations emerged: 1) the necessity to develop established proficiency levels for new teachers related to diverse learners, 2) the need for shared responsibility of outcomes and targeted induction support, and 3) support for supervisor evaluation as a viable mechanism for education program accountability of teaching effectiveness of graduates

    Can bio-inspired information processing steps be realized as synthetic biochemical processes?

    We consider possible designs and experimental realiza-tions in synthesized rather than naturally occurring bio-chemical systems of a selection of basic bio-inspired information processing steps. These include feed-forward loops, which have been identified as the most common information processing motifs in many natural pathways in cellular functioning, and memory-involving processes, specifically, associative memory. Such systems should not be designed to literally mimic nature. Rather, we can be guided by nature's mechanisms for experimenting with new information/signal processing steps which are based on coupled biochemical reactions, but are vastly simpler than natural processes, and which will provide tools for the long-term goal of understanding and harnessing nature's information processing paradigm. Our biochemical processes of choice are enzymatic cascades because of their compatibility with physiological processes in vivo and with electronics (e.g., electrodes) in vitro allowing for networking and interfacing of enzyme-catalyzed processes with other chemical and biochemical reactions. In addition to designing and realizing feed-forward loops and other processes, one has to develop approaches to probe their response to external control of the time-dependence of the input(s), by measuring the resulting time-dependence of the output. The goal will be to demonstrate the expected features, for example, the delayed response and stabilizing effect of the feed-forward loops

    Plasma Retinol Concentrations and Dietary Intakes of Mother-Infant Sets in Singleton versus Twin Pregnancy

    Vitamin A (retinol) is essential for normal fetal development, but the recommendation for maternal dietary intake (Retinol Activity Equivalent, RAE) does not differ for singleton vs. twin pregnancy, despite the limited evaluation of retinol status. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate plasma retinol concentrations and deficiency status in mother-infant sets from singleton vs. twin pregnancies as well as maternal RAE intake. A total of 21 mother-infant sets were included (14 singleton, 7 twin). The HPLC and LC-MS/HS evaluated the plasma retinol concentration, and data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Plasma retinol was significantly lower in twin vs. singleton pregnancies in both maternal (192.2 vs. 312.1 vs. mcg/L, p = 0.002) and umbilical cord (UC) samples (102.5 vs. 154.4 vs. mcg/L, p = 0.002). The prevalence of serum-defined vitamin A deficiency (VAD) \u3c200.6 mcg/L was higher in twins vs. singletons for both maternal (57% vs. 7%, p = 0.031) and UC samples (100% vs. 0%, p \u3c 0.001), despite a similar RAE intake (2178 vs. 1862 mcg/day, p = 0.603). Twin pregnancies demonstrated a higher likelihood of vitamin A deficiency in mothers, with an odds ratio of 17.3 (95% CI: 1.4 to 216.6). This study suggests twin pregnancy may be associated with VAD deficiency. Further research is needed to determine optimal maternal dietary recommendations during twin gestation

    Geographies of Medical and Health Humanities: A Cross-Disciplinary Conversation

    In recent years, both within and beyond academic and clinical spheres, medical and health humanities have become increasingly influential. Drawing from interdisciplinary fields in the humanities, social sciences, and the arts, medical and health humanities present unique lenses for considering nuanced spaces and lived experiences of health and health care; they also help challenge traditional ways that medicine and health care are understood and practiced. This collection brings together practitioners and theorists working broadly in medical health humanities, asking them both to consider their work as temporally and spatially located and to position their practices in conversation with a growing uptake of humanities methods and methodologies in other disciplines. The work of nine contributors uses these themes as a starting point for thinking about the future of medical health humanities in new and potentially even more productive ways

    Differences in Maternal and Infant Cord Blood Vitamin D Between Racial/Ethnic Groups

    Background: Vitamin D deficiency associated with lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration is common among individuals with more melanin pigmentation. Low 25(OH)D levels in pregnant women may be related to increased risk of low birth weight and preterm delivery. Still, few studies have assessed how serum levels of 25(OH)D vary between maternal and infant race/ethnicity. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between 25(OH)D levels in maternal blood and infant cord blood within certain ethnic groups, prematurity status, and low birth weight. Experimental Design:An IRB-approved study enrolled 86 mother-infant pairs. Maternal blood samples and infant cord blood samples were analyzed for 25(OH)D serum levels. Descriptive statistics and Kruskal-Willis tests comparisons were conducted with the use of IBM SPSS Statistics 28 software to assess the relationship between maternal and cord blood 25(OH)D levels in other race/ethnicity groups, birthweight, and preterm birth. Prematurity was categorized into two groups: premature (weeks) and term (≥37 weeks). Birth weight was categorized into two groups: low birth weight (\u3c 2500 g weeks) and not low birth weight (≥2500 g weeks). A p-value of Results:Median levels of 25(OH)D serum were lower in infant’s cord blood (22.52 ng/mL) than maternal blood (38.06 ng/mL). White participants had significantly higher 25(OH)D levels than African American participants in both maternal blood (40.76 ng/mL vs 27.79, p = Conclusion: Our findings suggest a possible association with lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration in darker skin pigmentation, even in a small sample size. These results suggest that prematurity and birth weight should be replicated in larger sample sizes of different Race/Ethnic groups, limiting this finding. Further studies should focus on examining differences with larger and more diverse sample sizes.
