Infrared spectroscopy of star formation in galaxies
The Brackett alpha and beta lines with 7.2 seconds angular and 350 km/s velocity resolution were observed in 11 infrared-bright galaxies. From these measurements extinctions, Lyman continuum fluxes, and luminosities due to OB stars were derived. The galaxies observed to date are NGC3690, M38, NGC 5195, Arp 220, NGC 520, NGC660, NGC1614, NGC 3079, NGC 6946, NGC 7714, and Maffei 2, all of which were suggested at some time to be starburst ogjects. The contributions of OB stars to the luminosities of these galaxies can be quantified from the measurements and range from insignificant to sufficient to account for the total energy output. The OB stellar luminosities observed are as high as 10 to the 12th solar luminosities in the galaxy NGC 1614. It is noteworthy that star formation can play very different roles in the infrared energy output of galaxies of similar luminosity, as for example Arp 220 and NGC 1614. In addition to probing the star formation process in these galaxies, the Brackett line measurements, when compared to radio and infrared continuum results, have revealed some unexpected and at present imperfectly understood phenomena: in some very luminous sources the radio continuum appears to be suppressed relative to the infrared recombination lines; in many galaxies there is a substantial excess of 10 micron flux over that predicted from simple models of Lyman alpha heating of dust if young stars are the only significant energy source
Development of Hurricane Storm Surge Model to Predict Coastal Highway Inundation for South Texas
Forecasting areas prone to flooding will allow us to send off our information gathered to departments such as TxDOT and the United States Department of Transportation. This would then enable these departments to create appropriate evacuation routes, depicting which roads are clear and which cannot be used in the event of a storm. Simulating hurricanes that have passed through this area such as Dolly in 2008, Beulah in 1967, and Bret in 1999 will display the roads and federal highways that frequently tend to get flooded. Identifying the “danger roads” and which federal highways will ultimately be useful for various engineering purposes, such as show the information produced. Since roads act as not only a means for transportation, but a very important drainage system as well. In the Willacy County and Cameron County, there is about 14 major highways (four of them which are US highways). A research study is being proposed over the course of the year that would project the overflow of storm surge onto USDOT and TXDOT major highways. The project entailment is to simulate about 3 historical hurricanes that have passed through the Laguna Madre and focusing on about five of the nearest highways along the coast. This would give the project outcome of receiving the adequate information to identify how much of each highway would get flooded from each Hurricane, as well as the duration of the surge submerging the areas of each specific highway
NGC 4102: High Resolution Infrared Observations of a Nuclear Starburst Ring
The composite galaxy NGC 4102 hosts a LINER nucleus and a starburst. We
mapped NGC 4102 in the 12.8 micron line of [NeII], using the echelon
spectrometer TEXES on the NASA IRTF, to obtain a data cube with 1.5" spatial
and 25 km/s spectral, resolution. Combining near-infrared, radio, and the
[NeII] data shows that the extinction to the starburst is substantial, more
than 2 magnitudes at K band, and that the neon abundance is less than half
solar. We find that the star formation in the nuclear region is confined to a
rotating ring or disk of 4.3" (~300 pc) diameter, inside the Inner Lindblad
Resonance. This region is an intense concentration of mass, with a dynamical
mass of ~3 x 10^9 solar masses, and of star formation. The young stars in the
ring produce the [NeII] flux reported by Spitzer for the entire galaxy. The
mysterious blue component of line emission detected in the near-infrared is
also seen in [NeII]; it is not a normal AGN outflow.Comment: submitted to Ap
The strategic helper: Narcissism and prosocial motives and behaviors
Across three studies, we examined the relationship between narcissism, prosocial behaviors, and the reasons why people engaged in them. Specifically, we examined how narcissistic people engaged in charitable donations, taking advantage of a naturally occurring mass charitable donation campaign, the ALS “ice bucket challenge” (Study 1). We also examined how narcissism was related to volunteering and other types of prosocial behaviors (Studies 2 and 3). Moreover, we compared and contrasted the prosocial responses of more empathic versus more narcissistic people (Studies 2 and 3). This paper can help scholars and practitioners to determine under which circumstances, and for which reasons, narcissistic people may exhibit prosocial behaviors
Geospatial analysis of impact on evacuation routes and urban areas in South Texas due to flood events
The Lower Rio Grande Valley has historically faced a variety of hurricanes and tropical storms that have led to sever flooding. As a consequence, waves of mass evacuation of the local population with the means of transportation occur frequently. While evacuation is encouraged in some cases of disaster, the routing is not always available as water takes to roads and drainage capacities are overwhelmed. In order to dissert the most appropriate evacuation routes, it is necessary to analyze the areas that will be affected in the future based on urban locations, elevation, and historical information. This project utilizes a semi-coupled hydrodynamic modeling approach that combines the overall spectrum of hurricane storm surge and rainfall induced flooding. The combination of models provide data that can be analyzed with Geographical Information Systems to illustrate the severity of flooding. This analysis can be used to denote the location of the affected evacuation routes and an estimation of population affected in various storm scenarios. The estimated results of this project can be used to not only plan future evacuation routes but denote what areas will possibly require road maintenance after certain flooding scenarios
Empathy and stress related neural responses in maternal decision making
Mothers need to make caregiving decisions to meet the needs of children, which may or may not result in positive child feedback. Variations in caregivers' emotional reactivity to unpleasant child-feedback may be partially explained by their dispositional empathy levels. Furthermore, empathic response to the child's unpleasant feedback likely helps mothers to regulate their own stress. We investigated the relationship between maternal dispositional empathy, stress reactivity, and neural correlates of child feedback to caregiving decisions. In Part 1 of the study, 33 female participants were recruited to undergo a lab-based mild stressor, the Social Evaluation Test (SET), and then in Part 2 of the study, a subset of the participants, 14 mothers, performed a Parenting Decision Making Task (PDMT) in an fMRI setting. Four dimensions of dispositional empathy based on the Interpersonal Reactivity Index were measured in all participants-Personal Distress, Empathic Concern, Perspective Taking, and Fantasy. Overall, we found that the Personal Distress and Perspective Taking were associated with greater and lesser cortisol reactivity, respectively. The four types of empathy were distinctly associated with the negative (vs. positive) child feedback activation in the brain. Personal Distress was associated with amygdala and hypothalamus activation, Empathic Concern with the left ventral striatum, ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC), and supplemental motor area (SMA) activation, and Fantasy with the septal area, right SMA and VLPFC activation. Interestingly, hypothalamus-septal coupling during the negative feedback condition was associated with less PDMT-related cortisol reactivity. Drug Discovery Through Drug Perturbation Pathway Modeling and Network Analysis
Due to intrinsic complex molecular interactions, the “one disease – one target – one drug” strategy for disease treatment is no longer the best option to treat cancers. To assess drug pharmacological effects, we assume that “ideal” drugs for a patient can treat or prevent the disease by modulating gene expression profiles of this patient to the similar level with those in healthy people. A new approach for drug-protein interactions curation, drug-drug similarity network comparison, and integrative pathway model construction and evaluation was introduced to determine optimal drugs for various cancers. Drug-protein interaction curation is conducted to discover novel drug-protein relationships and is categorized as: up regulated, down regulated, indirect up or down, ambiguous and unknown. The manual curation can be utilized for drug repurposing and examining drug mechanism on a pathway level. A drug-drug similarity network model is built by examining similar targets, therapeutic mechanisms, side effects, and chemical structures. Drug similarity analysis is useful for drug repositioning because similar drugs may have compatible therapeutic or toxic effects for a disease. Drug similarity networks are constructed and examined through a molecular network visualization platform. An integrative disease-specific pathway model is also built to gain a more holistic view of disease mechanisms by including every significant disease-specific protein. Including drugs on the pathway through target information can also offer a clear mechanism for the drug’s action. We also transform integrated pathways into network models and ranked drugs based on the network topological features of drug targets, drug-affecting genes/proteins, and curated disease-specific proteins. Combining our three approaches could potentially lead to advances in drug repurposing and repositioning
Understanding the Meaning of Conformity to Feminine Norms in Lifestyle Habits and Health: A Cluster Analysis
Background: Gender roles impact different spheres of life and lead women to behavioral patterns and lifestyle habits associated with femininity, generating important differences between men and women in health. The present study analyzed relationships between conformity to the feminine norms and different lifestyle indicators: Educational level, marital status, alcohol consumption, tobacco consumption, sleeping hours, social support, and physical activity. Additionally, cluster analysis was developed in order to identify different patterns of gender role conformity.
Methods: The sample was made up of 347 women age 18–70 from Spain. Data collection was conducted during 2014.
Results: Multiple logistic regression analyses produced odds ratios showing that women with lower feminine role conformity were more likely to use tobacco and alcohol, but less likely to share their lives with someone. Cluster analysis found four different profiles of gender role conformity related to different patterns of alcohol consumption and marital status.
Conclusions: Conformity to feminine norms was associated with basic affective conditions such as sharing life with others and with alcohol and tobacco consumption, but not with physical activity, social support, and sleep duration. Whereas tobacco and alcohol use have important health implications, public health systems should pay attention to gender-related variables in order to design and implement specific prevention programs
