The thymus is critical for mounting an effective immune response and maintaining health. However, epidemiologic studies characterizing thymic function in the population setting are lacking. Using data from 263 adults in the Detroit Neighborhood Health Study, we examined thymic function as measured by the number of signal joint T-cell receptor excision circles (sjTREC) and assessed associations with established indicators of physiological health. Overall, increasing age and male gender were significantly associated with reduced thymic function. Adjusting for covariates, individuals with elevated levels of the pro-inflammatory biomarkers C-reactive protein (β: −0.50 [95% CI: −0.82, −0.18] for moderate elevation; β: −0.29 [95% CI: −0.59, 0.00] for high elevation) and interleukin-6 (β: −0.60 [95% CI: −0.92, −0.28] for moderate elevation; β: −0.43 [95% CI: −0.77, −0.08] for severe elevation) also had lower thymic function. Compared to individuals with a BMI <25, individuals who were overweight (β: 0.36 [95% CI: 0.07, 0.64]) or obese (β: 0.27 [95% CI: −0.03, 0.56]) had higher thymic function. Differences by self-rated health were not statistically significant. Our findings underscore demographic- and health-related gradients in thymic function among adult residents of Detroit, suggesting thymic function may be an important biomarker of health status in adults at the population level

[EN] The potential offered by technologies is a reality that must be addressed and used in the Higher Education environments. Professors must be able to integrate technologies into their sessions and facilitate the work of the skill acquisition. The main objectives of this work are: i) to take advantage of the Lessons tool (PoliformaT) to evaluate the acquisition of transversal competences and, ii) to compare if the use of flip teaching improves its acquisition. In the subject of "Geology, Soil science and Climatology" (Degrees in Agri-Food Engineering and Forestry Engineering), an experience was developed during two academic courses in a population of 169 students on average each year. Through Lessons, a template was designed for the student to work, sequentially and based on their knowledge, a specific activity of soil science. In the activity, the student had to face a practical assumption with 4 options to consider as a response. According to its response the specific skills and critical thinking skill would be evaluated. The first year the students had to carry out the activity autonomously in PoliformaT, but in the second year, flip teaching was applied in the same activity. In that occasion; students had to watch online material and subsequently work on the specific concepts in class. Finally, they had to solve independently the practical case in Lessons, where they were evaluated and feedback was provided. The combination of "skill assessment and flip teaching" promoted that in the second year, 66% of the students acquired an adequate level of critical thinking skill. However, although the first year, 65% of the students also acquired it, it has been detected that in the second year there was an increase of 7% of students that passed from good to excellent acquisition level.Moreno Ramón, H.; Ibañez Asensio, S.; Martínez García, A.; Guillén Guillamón, IE.; Cabedo Fabrés, M.; Jiménez Belenguer, AI.; Calvet Sanz, S.... Background and Objectives Obesity and HIV-1/HAART-associated lipodystrophy syndrome (HALS) share clinical, pathological and mechanistic features. Tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) is a multifunctional cytokine that plays an important role in obesity and related diseases. We sought to explore the relationship between HALS and circulating levels of soluble (s) TWEAK and its scavenger receptor sCD163. Methods This was a cross-sectional multicenter study of 120 HIV-1-infected patients treated with a stable HAART regimen; 56 with overt HALS and 64 without HALS. Epidemiological and clinical variables were determined. Serum levels of sTWEAK and sCD163 levels were measured by ELISA. Results were analyzed with Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U and χ2 test. Pearson and Spearman correlation were used to estimate the strength of association between variables. Results Circulating sTWEAK was significantly decreased in HALS patients compared with non-HALS patients (2.81±0.2 vs. 2.94±0.28 pg/mL, p = 0.018). No changes were observed in sCD163 levels in the studied cohorts. On multivariate analysis, a lower log sTWEAK concentration was independently associated with the presence of HALS (OR 0.027, 95% CI 0.001-0.521, p = 0.027). Conclusions HALS is associated with decreased sTWEAK levels

[EN] Transversal skills have led to restructuring subjects, methodology and materials in Higher Education. The Universitat Politècnica of Valencia (UPV) has begun to apply and assess these skills in their degrees where the students are the center of the learning process. Faced with these problems, the following study aims to facilitate and test the assessment of tranversal skills in the UPV through an advanced tool (Lessons) that has been developed by Sakai, and it is available to the entire university community within the PoliformaT platform. This tool allows not only the evaluation of skills in a traditional way (student-teacher), but also establishes an environment based on the philosophy of web 3.0 where 3 types of learning interactions are produced (student-teacher, teacher-student and Studentstudent). In addition, it allows to redirect the students according to theis knowledge and allows self-evaluation before the activity development. The experience was carried out on 730 students who belong to 11 subjetcs in different degrees/master/doctorate courses. Outcomes registered in Lessons expressed that more than 80% of them believe that they should be selfassessed at the beginning. In this sense, more than 70% of the students express that they have achieved the transversal skill, although this outcomes contrast with the teachers' evaluation, which reduce the level of skill achievement.[ES] Las competencias transversales han provocado una reestructuración de materias, metodologías y materiales en la Educación Superior. [EN] One of the most relevant threats that teachers face when developing core skills in higher education is how to do it in the real situation of their classes. This may result in demotivation of teachers to achieve this challenge. At this moment, an important training task is necessary for both teachers and students, particularly regarding how to develop and evaluate these skills. The general objective of this work is to contribute to the development of core skills to the real situation of grades. This contribution is achieved by collecting and selecting electronic resources, which will be classified and structured according to the core skill they contribute to. Other information such as target audience (students, teachers or both) was also collected. Results show a wide quantitative and qualitative divergence among resources corresponding to different skills. Calvet Sanz, S.; Moreno Ramón, H.; Ibañez Asensio, S.; Jiménez Belenguer, AI.; Guillén Guillamón, IE.; Cabedo Fabrés, M.; Martínez García, A.... [EN] This paper describes the work performed in the last year within the Teaching Innovation Project "Development of generic skills to promote student excellence" by the team of Innovation and Educational Quality (EICE) GRIPAU at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). GRIPAU is a multidisciplinary team of teachers focused on promoting innovation and improving the quality of learning in Higher Education. In this paper GRIPAU has implemented a teaching methodology that facilitates the acquisition of different transverse skills by students, allowing progress towards excellence, understood from the point of view of their integral development. Pilot experiences have been conducted to develop transverse skills in subjects of different degrees, establishing a common pattern of performance. A study of the starting level of students has been carried out for each skill. Then, the student has been given proper guidelines to develop the skill. Finally, students are informed about the degree of accomplishment and the level of excellence achieved after completing the subject. Martínez García, A.; Cabedo Fabrés, M.; Calvet Sanz, S.; Jiménez Belenguer, A.; Guillén Guillamón, I.; Ibañez Asensio, S.; Moreno Ramón, H.... Psychometric properties of Liverpool Stoicism Scale (LSS) in a cohort of patients with resected cancer in adjuvant treatment

    Get PDF
Stoicism has been used to describe a wide range of behaviors in the face of disease that go from silence, resistance to the adversity, or 'to make the best of a bad disease'. This study pursued two objectives: 1) analyze the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the LSS; 2) assess the relation between stoicism and gender, age, and the five-factor personality model. NEOcoping is a prospective, multicenter, observational, non-interventionist study. Patients were recruited consecutively at thirteen Spanish teaching hospitals. The following scales were administered: Liverpool Stoicism Scale (LSS) and Big Five Inventory (BFI-10). A total of 443 patients (250 females) with a mean age of 59.8 years (SD =12.3) were enrolled. Colon cancer was the most common, followed by breast cancer. At the total-scale level, mean LSS was lower than the originally reported British sample. The four-factor structure fitted the data well, had a clear interpretation, and the derived scales showed acceptable reliabilities. The personality trait of introversion predicted 4.1% of the variance of stoicism (p<.001). Even though it needs to be improved, the LSS scale demonstrates acceptable psychometric properties to appraise stoicism in the Spanish population with resected cancer
