Local geometry of random geodesics on negatively curved surfaces
It is shown that the tessellation of a compact, negatively curved surface
induced by a typical long geodesic segment, when properly scaled, looks locally
like a Poisson line process. This implies that the global statistics of the
tessellation -- for instance, the fraction of triangles -- approach those of
the limiting Poisson line process.Comment: This version extends the results of the previous version to surfaces

Effects of BRCA2 deficiency on telomere recombination in non-ALT and ALT cells
This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund - Copyright @ 2011 Sapir et al.Background: Recent studies suggest that BRCA2 affects telomere maintenance. Interestingly, anti cancer treatments that involve BRCA2 and telomerase individually are currently being explored. In the light of the above recent studies their combinatorial targeting may be justified in the development of future treatments. In order to investigate effects of BRCA2 that can be explored for this combinatorial targeting we focused on the analysis of recombination rates at telomeres by monitoring T-SCEs (Telomere Sister Chromatid Exchanges). Results: We observed a significant increase in T-SCE frequencies in four BRCA2 defective human cell lines thus suggesting that BRCA2 suppresses recombination at telomeres. To test this hypothesis further we analyzed T-SCE frequencies in a set of Chinese hamster cell lines with or without functional BRCA2. Our results indicate that introduction of functional BRCA2 normalizes frequencies of T-SCEs thus supporting the notion that BRCA2 suppresses recombination at telomeres. Given that ALT (Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres) positive cells maintain telomeres by recombination we investigated the effect of BRCA2 depletion in these cells. Our results show that this depletion causes a dramatic reduction in T-SCE frequencies in ALT positive cells, but not in non-ALT cells. Conclusion: BRCA2 suppresses recombination at telomeres in cells that maintain them by conventional mechanisms. Furthermore, BRCA2 depletion in ALT positive cells reduces high levels of T-SCEs normally found in these cells. Our results could be potentially important for refining telomerase-based anti-cancer therapies. This work is supported in part by grants from European Commission RISC-RAD contract FI6RCT2003-508842 and British Counci
Periodic elements of the free idempotent generated semigroup on a biordered set
We show that every periodic element of the free idempotent generated
semigroup on an arbitrary biordered set belongs to a subgroup of the semigroup
Retaining Expression on De-identified Faces
© Springer International Publishing AG 2017The extensive use of video surveillance along with advances in face recognition has ignited concerns about the privacy of the people identifiable in the recorded documents. A face de-identification algorithm, named k-Same, has been proposed by prior research and guarantees to thwart face recognition software. However, like many previous attempts in face de-identification, kSame fails to preserve the utility such as gender and expression of the original data. To overcome this, a new algorithm is proposed here to preserve data utility as well as protect privacy. In terms of utility preservation, this new algorithm is capable of preserving not only the category of the facial expression (e.g., happy or sad) but also the intensity of the expression. This new algorithm for face de-identification possesses a great potential especially with real-world images and videos as each facial expression in real life is a continuous motion consisting of images of the same expression with various degrees of intensity.Peer reviewe

Classification of limit varieties of -trivial monoids
A variety of algebras is called limit if it is non-finitely based but all its
proper subvarieties are finitely based.
We present a new pair of limit varieties of monoids and show that together
with the five limit varieties of monoids previously discovered by Jackson,
Zhang and Luo and the first-named author, there are exactly seven limit
varieties of -trivial monoids.Comment: 26 page
Analysis of airplane boarding via space-time geometry and random matrix theory
We show that airplane boarding can be asymptotically modeled by 2-dimensional
Lorentzian geometry. Boarding time is given by the maximal proper time among
curves in the model. Discrepancies between the model and simulation results are
closely related to random matrix theory. We then show how such models can be
used to explain why some commonly practiced airline boarding policies are
ineffective and even detrimental.Comment: 4 page
The Analysis of the Difficulty in Learning Economics Subject Experienced By Students of Favored State Senior High Schools in City of Malang
Education need to have the ability to improve students’ potentials, namely religion spiritual power, self-management, personality, intelligence, virtuous morals, as well as skills needed by learners and society. Teachers carry an important role to resolve problems related to learning difficulties. The result of the research that was done through interview shows that the types of learning difficulties found in students of favored state senior high schools in the City of Malang are the lack of understanding in receiving information and concept understanding problem. Hence, the solution suggested to solve the problems are: collecting materials taken from compulsory economics textbook and electronic books; asking the teacher regarding the materials that are not yet fully understood; increasing the frequency of exercises in LKS (School’s Exercise Book), or other sources; making summaries, schemes, and notes to ease the comprehension of economics materials’ basic concept; and scheduling studying time outside the school, and at home as well as providing more studying media at home.
