Thermodynamic modeling of the LiF-YF3 phase diagram
A thermodynamic optimization of the LiF-YF3 binary phase diagram was
performed by fitting the Gibbs energy functions to experimental data that were
taken from the literature, as well as from own thermoanalytic measurements (DTA
and DSC) on HF-treated samples. The Gibbs energy functions for the end member
compounds were taken from the literature. Excess energy terms, which describe
the effect of interaction between the two fluoride compounds in the liquid
phase, were expressed by the Redlich-Kister polynomial function. The calculated
phase diagram and thermodynamic properties for the unique formed compound,
LiYF4, are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Fire Management In Veredas (palm Swamps): New Perspectives On Traditional Farming Systems In Jalapão, Brazil
The veredas (palm swamps) of the cerrado biome are legally protected as áreas de Preservação Permanente (Permanent Preservation Areas), and the use of fire in these wetlands is prohibited. We carried out a preliminary assessment of environmental impacts of the local use of agricultural fire in veredas through a collaborative research project in Jalapão (Tocantins, Brazil). We found that "roças de esgoto" (drained peat swamp swidden fields) form the basis of the agricultural system of this region. These fields ensure production throughout the year, provide more income than "roças de toco" (rainfed swidden fields), and may function as a repository of agrobiodiversity on a regional scale. This study suggests that the use of fire in veredas associated with roças de esgoto does not lead to significant deforestation, that is, to the disappearance of the forest physiognomy, but instead helps maintain tree cover during the fallow period, possibly accelerating natural succession.19326929
Laser Cooling of Trapped Fermi Gases deeply below the Fermi Temperature
We study the collective Raman cooling of a polarized trapped Fermi gas in the
Festina Lente regime, when the heating effects associated with photon
reabsorptions are suppressed. We predict that by adjusting the spontaneous
Raman emission rates and using appropriately designed anharmonic traps,
temperatures of the order of 2.7% of the Fermi temperature can be achieved in
3D.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; final versio
The flavonoid agathisflavone modulates the microglial neuroinflammatory response and enhances remyelination
Myelin loss is the hallmark of the demyelinating disease multiple sclerosis (MS) and plays a significant role in multiple neurodegenerative diseases. A common factor in all neuropathologies is the central role of microglia, the intrinsic immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS). Microglia are activated in pathology and can have both pro- and anti-inflammatory functions. Here, we examined the effects of the flavonoid agathisflavone on microglia and remyelination in the cerebellar slice model following lysolecithin induced demyelination. Notably, agathisflavone enhances remyelination and alters microglial activation state, as determined by their morphology and cytokine profile. Furthermore, these effects of agathisflavone on remyelination and microglial activation were inhibited by blockade of estrogen receptor α. Thus, our results identify agathisflavone as a novel compound that may act via ER to regulate microglial activation and enhance remyelination and repair
Hydrodynamic excitations of trapped dipolar fermions
A single-component Fermi gas of polarized dipolar particles in a harmonic
trap can undergo a mechanical collapse due to the attractive part of the
dipole-dipole interaction. This phenomenon can be conveniently manipulated by
the shape of the external trapping potential. We investigate the signatures of
the instability by studying the spectrum of low-lying collective excitations of
the system in the hydrodynamic regime. To this end, we employ a time-dependent
variational method as well as exact numerical solutions of the hydrodynamic
equations of the system.Comment: 4 pages, 2 eps figures, final versio
Expansion of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in an atomic waveguide
The expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an atomic waveguide is
analyzed. We study different regimes of expansion, and identify a transient
regime between one-dimensional and three-dimensional dynamics, in which the
properties of the condensate and its further expansion can be well explained by
reducing the transversal dynamics to a two-level system. The relevance of this
regime in current experiments is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figs, Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Spherically Symmetric Braneworld Solutions with R_{4} term in the Bulk
An analysis of a spherically symmetric braneworld configuration is performed
when the intrinsic curvature scalar is included in the bulk action; the
vanishing of the electric part of the Weyl tensor is used as the boundary
condition for the embedding of the brane in the bulk. All the solutions outside
a static localized matter distribution are found; some of them are of the
Schwarzschild-(A)dS_{4} form. Two modified Oppenheimer-Volkoff interior
solutions are also found; one is matched to a Schwarzschild-(A)dS_{4} exterior,
while the other does not. A non-universal gravitational constant arises,
depending on the density of the considered object; however, the conventional
limits of the Newton's constant are recovered. An upper bound of the order of
TeV for the energy string scale is extracted from the known solar system
measurements (experiments). On the contrary, in usual brane dynamics, this
string scale is calculated to be larger than TeV.Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure, one minor chang
Collapse dynamics of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates
We analyze the implosion and subsequent explosion of a trapped condensate
after the scattering length is switched to a negative value. Our results
compare very well qualitatively and fairly well quantitatively with the results
of recent experiments at JILA.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Exponential Metric Fields
The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission will use advanced
technologies to achieve its science goals: the direct detection of
gravitational waves, the observation of signals from compact (small and dense)
stars as they spiral into black holes, the study of the role of massive black
holes in galaxy evolution, the search for gravitational wave emission from the
early Universe. The gravitational red-shift, the advance of the perihelion of
Mercury, deflection of light and the time delay of radar signals are the
classical tests in the first order of General Relativity (GR). However, LISA
can possibly test Einstein's theories in the second order and perhaps, it will
show some particular feature of non-linearity of gravitational interaction. In
the present work we are seeking a method to construct theoretical templates
that limit in the first order the tensorial structure of some metric fields,
thus the non-linear terms are given by exponential functions of gravitational
strength. The Newtonian limit obtained here, in the first order, is equivalent
to GR.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science, 17 page
Pregnancy Reprograms the Epigenome of Mammary Epithelial Cells and Blocks the Development of Premalignant Lesions
Pregnancy causes a series of cellular and molecular changes in mammary epithelial cells (MECs) of female adults. In addition, pregnancy can also modify the predisposition of rodent and human MECs to initiate oncogenesis. Here, we investigate how pregnancy reprograms enhancer chromatin in the mammary epithelium of mice and influences the transcriptional output of the oncogenic transcription factor cMYC. We find that pregnancy induces an expansion of the active cis-regulatory landscape of MECs, which influences the activation of pregnancy-related programs during re-exposure to pregnancy hormones in vivo and in vitro. Using inducible cMYC overexpression, we demonstrate that post-pregnancy MECs are resistant to the downstream molecular programs induced by cMYC, a response that blunts carcinoma initiation, but does not perturb the normal pregnancy-induced epigenomic landscape. cMYC overexpression drives post-pregnancy MECs into a senescence-like state, and perturbations of this state increase malignant phenotypic changes. Taken together, our findings provide further insight into the cell-autonomous signals in post-pregnancy MECs that underpin the regulation of gene expression, cellular activation, and resistance to malignant development
