Divide and conquer: resonance induced by competitive interactions
We study an Ising model in a network with disorder induced by the presence of
both attractive and repulsive links. This system is subjected to a subthreshold
signal, and the goal is to see how the response is enhanced for a given
fraction of repulsive links. This can model a network of spin-like neurons with
excitatory and inhibitory couplings. By means of numerical simulations and
analytical calculations we find that there is an optimal probability, such that
the coherent response is maximal

Desmoid Tumours in Familial Adenomatous Polyposis: Review of 17 Patients from a Portuguese Tertiary Center
INTRODUCTION:
Desmoid Tumours (DT) are benign tumours with an estimated incidence of 2-4 per million per year. Between 7-16% of them are associated with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) and are mostly parietal or intra-abdominal. They are a challenge in relation to their unpredictable natural course, associated complications and difficult treatment.
AIM:
The aim of the present study was to review the occurrence, management and follow-up of DT on FAP patients treated consecutively at a tertiary care center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
A retrospective review of clinical data from patients treated consecutively between 1993 and 2014. Patients' data was gathered from clinical records. Data collection included the following variables: demographic data, genotype, FAP phenotype, data on FAP related surgery, DT diagnosis, location, size and number, DT treatment, patients' status and follow-up data.
RESULTS:
The study population consisted of 17 patients from 9 families; with a mean age of 41 years, mostly women (59%) and most with a mutation either on codon 232 or 554. Most tumours had an intra-abdominal component (59%) with a mean size of 5cm. Fifteen patients were first treated with pharmacotherapy (Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) and Tamoxifen). Five patients (29%) underwent surgery, 4 of them for complications of intra-abdominal tumours and 1 patient for abdominal wall tumours. Two patients underwent chemotherapy in relation to aggressive intra-abdominal disease. The mean follow-up time since diagnosis of DT was 123 months. Overall, 2 patients had remission, 11 patients had regression or stabilized disease, and 2 patients had progression. One patient died due to surgical complications.
CONCLUSION:
Diagnosis of DT is based on clinical symptoms, without the need for screening, although imaging plays an important role once diagnosis is suspected. The treatment approach is conservative on most patients, leaving surgery for DT related complications. Differential mesenteric fat deposition in bovines fed on silage or concentrate is independent of glycerol membrane permeability
© The Animal Consortium 2011In the meat industry, the manipulation of fat deposition in cattle is of pivotal importance to improve production efficiency, carcass composition and ultimately meat quality. There is an increasing interest in the identification of key factors and molecular mechanisms responsible for the development of specific fat depots. This study aimed at elucidating the influence of breed and diet on adipose tissue membrane permeability and fluidity and their interplay on fat deposition in bovines. Two Portuguese autochthonous breeds, Alentejana and Barrosã, recognized as late- and early-maturing breeds, respectively, were chosen to examine the effects of breed and diet on fat deposition and on adipose membrane composition and permeability. Twenty-four male bovines from these breeds were fed on silage-based or concentrate-based diets for 11 months. Animals were slaughtered to determine their live slaughter and hot carcass weights, as well as weights of subcutaneous and visceral adipose depots. Mesenteric fat depots were excised and used to isolate adipocyte membrane vesicles where cholesterol content, fatty acid profile as well as permeability and fluidity were determined. Total accumulation of neither subcutaneous nor visceral fat was influenced by breed. In contrast, mesenteric and omental fat depots weights were higher in concentrate-fed bulls relative to silage-fed animals. Membrane fluidity and permeability to water and glycerol in mesenteric adipose tissue were found to be independent of breed and diet. Moreover, the deposition of cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acids, which may influence membrane properties, were unchanged among experimental groups. Adipose membrane lipids from the mesenteric fat depot of ruminants were rich in saturated fatty acids, and unaffected by polyunsaturated fatty acids dietary levels. Our results provide evidence against the involvement of cellular membrane permeability to glycerol on fat accumulation in mesenteric fat tissue of concentrate-fed bovines, which is consistent with the unchanged membrane lipid profile found among experimental groups.This study was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) through grant PTDC/CVT/2006/66114 and individual fellowships to Ana P. Conjugated linoleic acid reduces permeability and fluidity of adipose plasma membranes from obese Zucker rats

July 2010; 398 (2): 199-204.Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a dietary fatty acid frequently used as a body fat reducing agent whose effects upon cell membranes and cellular function remain unknown. Obese Zucker rats were fed atherogenic diets containing saturated fats of vegetable or animal origin with or without 1% CLA, as a mixture of cis(c)9,trans(t)11 and t10,c12 isomers. Plasma membrane vesicles obtained from visceral adi- pose tissue were used to assess the effectiveness of dietary fat and CLA membrane incorporation and its outcome on fluidity and permeability to water and glycerol. A significant decrease in adipose membrane fluidity was correlated with the changes observed in permeability, which seem to be caused by the incor- poration of the t10,c12 CLA isomer into membrane phospholipids. These results indicate that CLA supple- mentation in obese Zucker rats fed saturated and cholesterol rich diets reduces the fluidity and permeability of adipose membranes, therefore not supporting CLA as a body fat reducing agent through membrane fluidification in obese fat consumers
Emergence of Hierarchy on a Network of Complementary Agents
Complementarity is one of the main features underlying the interactions in
biological and biochemical systems. Inspired by those systems we propose a
model for the dynamical evolution of a system composed by agents that interact
due to their complementary attributes rather than their similarities. Each
agent is represented by a bit-string and has an activity associated to it; the
coupling among complementary peers depends on their activity. The connectivity
of the system changes in time respecting the constraint of complementarity. We
observe the formation of a network of active agents whose stability depends on
the rate at which activity diffuses in the system. The model exhibits a
non-equilibrium phase transition between the ordered phase, where a stable
network is generated, and a disordered phase characterized by the absence of
correlation among the agents. The ordered phase exhibits multi-modal
distributions of connectivity and activity, indicating a hierarchy of
interaction among different populations characterized by different degrees of
activity. This model may be used to study the hierarchy observed in social

Solutions of the reflection equations for the vertex model
We investigate the possible regular solutions of the boundary Yang-Baxter
equation for the fundamental vertex model. We find four distinct
classes of reflection matrices such that half of them are diagonal while the
other half are non-diagonal. The latter are parameterized by two continuous
parameters but only one solution has all entries non-null. The non-diagonal
solutions do not reduce to diagonal ones at any special limit of the

Topological Defects in Contracting Universes
We study the behaviour and consequences of cosmic string networks in
contracting universes. They approximately behave during the collapse phase as a
radiation fluids. Scaling solutions describing this are derived and tested
against high-resolution numerical simulations. A string network in a
contracting universe, together with the gravitational radiation it generates,
can affect the dynamics of the universe both locally and globally, and be an
important source of radiation, entropy and inhomogeneity. We discuss possible
