poisson: Some convergence issues

In this note we identify and illustrate some shortcomings of the poisson com- mand in STATA. Specifically, we point out that the command fails to check for the existence of the estimates and show that it is very sensitive to numerical problems. While these are serious problems that may prevent users from obtaining estimates, or even produce spurious and misleading results, we show that the informed user often has available simple work-arounds for these problems.

The Log of Gravity

Although economists have long been aware of Jensen's inequality, many econometric applications have neglected an important implication of it: the standard practice of interpreting the parameters of log-linearized models estimated by ordinary least squares as elasticities can be highly misleading in the presence of heteroskedasticity. This paper explains why this problem arises and proposes an appropriate estimator. Our criticism to conventional practices and the solution we propose extends to a broad range of economic applications where the equation under study is log-linearized. We develop the argument using one particular illustration, the gravity equation for trade, and apply the proposed technique to provide new estimates of this equation. We find significant differences between estimates obtained with the proposed estimator and those obtained with the traditional method. Further simulation evidence on the performance of the Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood estimator

We extend the simulation results given in Santos Silva and Tenreyro (2006, �The log of gravity,� The Review of Economics and Statistics, 88, 641-658) by considering data generated as a finite mixture of gamma variates. Data generated in this way can naturally have a large proportion of zeros and is fully compatible with constant elasticity models such as the gravity equation. Our results confirm that the Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood estimator is generally well behaved.

Currency Unions in Prospect and Retrospect

We critically review the recent literature on currency unions, and discuss the methodological challenges posed by the empirical assessment of their costs and benefits. In the process, we provide evidence on the economic effects of the euro. In particular, and in contrast with estimates of the trade effect of other currency unions, we find that the impact of the euro on trade has been close to zero. After reviewing the costs and benefits, we conclude with some open questions on normative and positive aspects of the theory of currency unions, emphasizing the need for a unified welfare-based framework to weigh their costs and gains.Currency union, Integration, Exchange Rage, Trade

Trading Partners and Trading Volumes: Implementing the Helpman-Melitz-Rubinstein Model Empirically

Helpman, Melitz, and Rubinstein (2008)-HMR-present a rich theoretical model to study the determinants of bilateral trade flows across countries. The model is then empirically implemented through a two-stage estimation procedure. On the Existence of the Maximum Likelihood Estimates for Poisson Regression

We note that the existence of the maximum likelihood estimates for Poisson regression depends on the data configuration. Because standard software does not check for this problem, the practitioner may be surprised to find that in some applications estimation of the Poisson regression is unusually difficult or even impossible. More seriously, the estimation algorithm may lead to spurious maximum likelihood estimates. We identify the signs of the non-existence of the maximum likelihood estimates and propose a simple empirical strategy to single out the regressors causing this type of identification failure.Poisson estimation, gravity equation

A presente pesquisa tem por escopo demonstrar a tentativa de sucessivos governos brasileiros em efetivar o direito fundamental ao ensino superior através da rede privada de ensino superior utilizando das políticas públicas do governo federal para ocupar as vagas disponíveis nessas instituições e assim garantir a efetividade do direito do cidadão. Parte-se da premissa de que este é um direito fundamental do cidadão e dever do Estado. VAGAS OCIOSAS NO ENSINO SUPERIOR BRASILEIRO: UMA ANÁLISE DOS GOVERNOS FERNANDO HENRIQUE CARDOSO E LUIZ INÁCIO LULA DA SILVA E SUAS REPERCUSSÕES NOS ANOS POSTERIORES

A proposta desse artigo é elencar as causas para a existência de vagas ociosas nas instituições de ensino superior brasileiras. Investiga o perfil do aluno que sai do ensino médio e escolhe não seguir adiante nos estudos, analisando o contexto do ensino fundamental, médio e superior do sistema de educação brasileiro. A realidade dos alunos que frequentam a escola pública em relação a dos alunos que frequentam a escola privada pode fazer muita diferença na hora de fazer escolhas ao final do ensino médio, condicionando não só a sua decisão de ingressar no próximo nível de ensino, como também de qual curso ingressar.Os dados reunidos sugerem que a escolarização básica em instituições públicas no Brasil não prepara o aluno para cursar o ensino superior. Por outro lado, investiga a participação das instituições de ensino superior na existência e permanência dessas vagas não preenchidas. O uso de software na percepção psicomotora da criança de pré-escola

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Computação.Este trabalho foi realizado através de uma pesquisa prática sobre o uso da informática como ferramenta no processo ensino-aprendizagem e da percepção da realidade do educando com suas experiências individuais e coletivas, numa visão geral dos conceitos psicomotores da educação infantil. Para desenvolver esta prática de ensino, fizeram-se necessárias observações e experimentos práticos com a ferramenta tecnológica software mapa da cidade. Estabelecendo relações entre o desenvolvimento do esquema corporal (percepção temporal, espacial, lateralidade, coordenação motora, etc.) tendo a participação de realidades sociais distintas. Buscando alternativas para desenvolver algumas insuficiências psicomotoras com auxílio da informática, foi elaborado um software, jogo educativo, mapa da cidade, sendo este, a simulação da cidade, desenvolvido no mundo dos atores. Esta ferramenta serviu como auxílio e diagnóstico para o educador em suas práticas trabalhar embasado numa constatação da deficiência psicomotora pois estas dificuldades são relevantes no estudo do desenvolvimento e habilidades psicomotoras por estudiosos e também nas práticas de quem trabalha com criança de pré-escola; constatados na prática com o experimento mapa da cidade nas crianças da escola E.E.B Santa Teresinha, Curitibanos- SC
