GROUND REACTION FORCES OF STEP EXERCISE DEPENDING ON STEP FREQUENCY AND BENCH HEIGHT

Step exercise is one of the most famous Fitness activities. Different music speeds and bench heights can be used in Step classes. During the step cycle the higher mechanical load is experienced when the first foot steps down. The purpose of this study was to determine the ground reaction forces (GRF) of the step-down phase, depending on step frequency and bench height. Two groups of subjects participated in this study: a) 20 female subjects, mean age of 25 years, skilled in Step exercise; and b) 15 female subjects, post menopause, mean age of 62 years. Kistler force plate signals were collected. Increasing step frequency and bench height leads to the increase of mechanical load, which appears trigger adaptations of the movement technique

STEP EXERCISE PROGRAM FOR ELDERLY WOMEN: SUPPORT LOAD EFFECTS ANALYSIS

The goal of the step program is the improvement of health and physical condition, within the scope of advisable exercise. The purpose of this study was to assess the safety of the program and identify its possible osteogenic effects on the elderly. Fifteen postmenopause women (mean age 61.66 ± 5.10 years) performed two-step patterns (basic step and knee lift). Vertical GRF were measured when stepping down on a Kistler force plate and a two-dimensional kinematics analysis was done using the APAS system. The amount of BMD was collected by DXA before and six months after the program. Although the conclusions drawn from a restricted population cannot be generalized, the results suggest that the mechanical stress associated with the program seems to constitute a positive osteogenic stimulus and is a safe and healthy activity that may be included in the physical activity programs for the elderly

IMIGRAÇÃO E ANARQUISMO NO MOVIMENTO OPERÁRIO DURANTE A PRIMEIRA REPÚBLICA

O objetivo do presente artigo é analisar a influência da imigração europeia na formação do movimento operário brasileiro durante as primeiras décadas da Primeira República. Parte dos imigrantes europeus trouxe as ideias anarquistas de organização operária para o Brasil. A força do anarquismo no movimento operário brasileiro foi intensa. Setores mais combativos do movimento operário eram formados por militantes que, em sua maioria, eram oriundos do anarquismo, da tendência do sindicalismo revolucionário. O sindicalismo revolucionário foi a principal força sindical de resistência à opressão oriunda do incipiente capitalismo no Brasil. É importante conhecermos os alicerces do movimento sindical em nosso país, suas influências, através do estudo da formação da classe operária brasileira e suas estratégias de atuação

Robust Computation in 2D Absolute EIT (A-EIT) Using D-Bar Methods with the “EXP” Approximation

Objective Absolute images have important applications in medical Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) imaging, but the traditional minimization and statistical based computations are very sensitive to modeling errors and noise. In this paper, it is demonstrated that D-bar reconstruction methods for absolute EIT are robust to such errors. Approach The effects of errors in domain shape and electrode placement on absolute images computed with 2-D D-bar reconstruction algorithms are studied on experimental data. Main Results It is demonstrated with tank data from several EIT systems that these methods are quite robust to such modeling errors, and furthermore the artefacts arising from such modeling errors are similar to those occurring in classic time-difference EIT imaging. Significance This study is promising for clinical applications where absolute EIT images are desirable, but previously thought impossible

Metal-insulator transition at B=0 in an ultra-low density (rs=23r_{s}=23) two dimensional GaAs/AlGaAs hole gas

We have observed a metal-insulator transition in an ultra-low density two dimensional hole gas formed in a high quality GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure at B=0. At the highest carrier density studied ($p_{s}=2.2x10^{10} cm^{-2}, r_{s}=16$) the hole gas is strongly metallic, with an exceptional mobility of $425,000 cm^{2}V^{-1}s^{-1}$. The low disorder and strength of the many-body interactions in this sample are highlighted by the observation of re-entrant metal insulator transitions in both the fractional ($\nu < 1/3$) and integer ($2 > \nu > 1$) quantum Hall regimes. On reducing the carrier density the temperature and electric field dependence of the resistivity show that the sample is still metallic at $p_{s}=1.3x10^{10} cm^{-2}$ ($r_{s}=21$), becoming insulating at $p_{s}{\simeq}1x10^{10} cm^{-2}$. Our results indicate that electron-electron interactions are dominant at these low densities, pointing to the many body origins of this metal-insulator transition. We note that the value of $r_{s}$ at the transition ($r_{s}=23 +/- 2$) is large enough to allow the formation of a weakly pinned Wigner crystal, and is approaching the value calculated for the condensation of a pure Wigner crystal.Comment: 4 pages, latex, 4 postscript figures, submitted to EP2DS-12 on 21st August 1997, to appear in Physica

Leptospirose canina: conscientização e importância da realização de ações educativas de prevenção em uma comunidade no Maranhão / Canine leptospirosis: awareness and importance of carrying out preventive educational actions in a community in Maranhão

A leptospirose caracteriza-se como uma doença infecciosa, aguda, febril e potencialmente grave, causada por bactérias espiroquetas do gênero Leptospira. Trata-se de uma zoonose que possui distribuição mundial e acomete diversas espécies de animais. Entre os domésticos, os cães no meio urbano são fontes potenciais na transmissão da doença. Este trabalho teve como objetivo conscientizar e desenvolver ações educativas relacionadas com a prevenção da leptospirose canina em uma comunidade adjacente à Universidade Estadual do Maranhão (UEMA). Foram analisados 200 questionários, totalizando 260 dados referentes à vacinação de animais da espécie canina. Dos 260 cães, 21,15% (N= 55) apresentavam idade menor que um ano e 6,15% (N= 16) com idade de dezesseis a vinte anos, caracterizando o período de vida ideal para o animal receber a vacina contra leptospirose. Dos animais com acesso à rua, a maioria dos cães, 58% (N= 150) não tinham acesso à rua, 31% (N= 80) tinham acesso à rua sem o tutor, o que significava que podiam ir à rua sempre que quisessem e 11% (N= 30) com o tutor, sendo preconizados passeios diários com horários estabelecidos. Do total de cães, 34,7% (N= 90) não são vacinados, os animais imunizados totalizam 65,3% (N= 170). Sobre os casos de contato com roedores, 69% (N= 180) informaram que já houve casos de proximidade em casa, mas os mesmos não procuraram o atendimento médico veterinário e 31% (N= 80) informaram que nunca houve nenhum caso. Sobre as dúvidas acerca da transmissão da doença, 62% (N= 160) informaram que o principal meio de transmissão é através do contato com urina e/ou água contaminada, 15% (N= 40) acham que é através do contato com o animal doente e 23% (N= 60) dos entrevistados não souberam informar. As informações obtidas neste trabalho permitem concluir que mesmo a leptospirose sendo uma doença recorrente no município, ainda há uma falta de conhecimento acerca da transmissão e prevenção. Portanto, faz-se necessário a implantação de medidas educativas sobre a importância do conhecimento acerca do tema e as boas práticas para oferecer bem-estar aos animais e ao meio ambiente.
