AbstractThe sperm in vitro binding assay in homologous oocytes can be used to estimate the boar fertility potential, but its usefulness may be limited by laboratorial structure and oocytes availability. This study aimed at determining the effect of distinct methods of oocytes conditioning and incubation media for the in vitro penetration (IVP) test. Oocytes used in the IVP test were: fresh and conditioned in PBS (T1); cooled and conditioned in PBS at 5°C for 48h (T2); or stored in ovaries frozen at −20°C (T3). For each treatment, two incubation media were tested at 39°C for 6h: modified TRIS buffer medium (mTBM); or Beltsville Thawing Solution (BTS) extender. The responses of interest were: IVP and polyspermy rates; and the number of penetrating spermatozoa per oocyte. All responses observed with incubation in BTS were inferior to those observed with incubation in mTBM (P<0.0001). When incubation was done in mTBM, none of the responses differed across treatments (P>0.05). However, when incubation was in BTS, all the three responses were superior for T1 than for T2 and T3 (P<0.05). Thus, the IVP test may be conducted with ovaries either cooled or recovered from frozen ovaries with results similar to those observed with fresh oocytes, if incubation is done in mTBM

Some aspects of SO4² absorption by excised roots of "Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench" namely, inibition effects of NaF, KCN, 2,4- DNP and factors such as aeration, solution pH and temperature on the rate of absorption were studied. The excised roots showed multiphasic mecanism of SO4²- absorption. The relative absorption rates, presented by three varieties, were in decreasing order: Tey-101, Contibrasil-101 and Dekalb-E-57. Inhibition effects on the absorption of SO4²- by excised roots were shown in the case of the three ihibitors studied hereof-. Aeration and solution temperature are important factors on SO4²- absorption. At the external solutio n concentration of Na,2SO(4)10-³M the best fitted equation to the experimental values was shown to be: umoles/g dry matter = 1,639- 1,585 exp.

The Impact of a Crisis Event on Predicting Social Media Virality

    No full text
Understanding why specific information pieces become viral in online social networks is a fundamental step in governing social media platforms. While previous studies explored which user and network properties enable information virality, little is known about how offline crisis events impact these features. Here we investigate to what extent a crisis event impacts virality prediction models. We analyze Twitter data before and after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine as a case study. We train and test statistical learning models on data before and after the invasion, evaluating which features related to content (e.g., existence of an URL), the user (e.g., number of previous tweets), or the network (e.g., degree centrality) are most relevant to predict virality. Tweets with more than 100 retweets are considered viral. We observe that the crisis event affects virality prediction: predictive accuracy is reduced when a model trained on data before the invasion is evaluated on data after the invasion—instead of being evaluated on data before the invasion. We observe that the crisis event leads to an increased fraction of viral tweets by users with fewer followers after the invasion. Moreover, we observe that, after the invasion, tweets containing URLs are more likely to become viral, implying an increased interest in website links, photos, and videos. Overall, our study reveals a shift in the importance of features underlying virality as a result of an offline crisis event.</p

Bonelike Apatite Coating On Ti6al4v: Novel Nucleation Process Using Sodium Silicate Solution

Despite the well known biocompatibility and bioactivity of synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA), its use, as structural biomaterial has been limited because of intrinsic low mechanical properties. In order to avoid this problem, metallic implants are commonly coated with a thin HA layers. Among the various techniques used to produce coatings on metals, the biomimetic process has gained increasing attention in the last years. In this work, a metallic substrate (Ti6Al4V) was coated using a variation of the traditional biomimetic method. The HA coatings were characterised by diffused reflectance spectroscopy (DRIFT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).416-4181658662Dhert, W.J.A., Plasma-sprayed coatings and hard-tissue compatibility (1992) A Comparative Study on Fluorapatite, Magnesiumwhitlockite and Hydroxyapatite, pp. 4-6. , Offsetdrukkerij Haveka B. Scintigraphic Findings Of Dysplasia Epiphysealis Hemimelica: A Case Report

Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica, a rare congenital growth disorder of the tarsus, was diagnosed radiographically in an 11-year-old boy with pain and a palpable hard mass in the medial aspect of his left ankle. Bone scintigraphy, performed after the intravenous injection of 481 MBq (13 mCi) Tc-99m MDP, showed markedly increased uptake in the medial aspect of the left ankle, and this uptake was comparable to that of the distal tibial growth plates. Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica is an osteocartilaginous overgrowth of one or more epiphyses or tarsal or carpal bones, involving either the medial or the lateral portion of the ossification center. Once dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica is diagnosed, a skeletal survey is performed to check for other sites of involvement. Bone scintigraphy proved useful in the detection of dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica and may be of great value because it can evaluate the entire skeleton with a radiation dose that is much lower than that needed for a skeletal survey.262162Azouz, E.M., Slomic, A.M., Marton, D., The variable manifestations of dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica (1985) Pedriatr Radiol, 15, p. 44Carlson, D.H., Wilkinson, R.H., Variability of unilateral epiphyseal dysplasia (dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica) (1979) Radiology, 133, p. 369Kuo, R.S., Bellemore, M.C., Monsell, F.P., Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica: Clinical features and management (1998) J Pediatr Orthop, 18, p. 543Keret, D., Spatz, D.K., Caro, P.A., Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica: Diagnosis and treatment (1992) J Pediatr Orthop, 12, p. 365Charron, M., Brown, M.L., Primary and metastatic bone disease (1996), p. 649. , Sandler MP, Coleman RE, Wackers FJT, et al., eds.
