Fluids in cosmology
We review the role of fluids in cosmology by first introducing them in
General Relativity and then by applying them to a FRW Universe's model. We
describe how relativistic and non-relativistic components evolve in the
background dynamics. We also introduce scalar fields to show that they are able
to yield an inflationary dynamics at very early times (inflation) and late
times (quintessence). Then, we proceed to study the thermodynamical properties
of the fluids and, lastly, its perturbed kinematics. We make emphasis in the

The histone deacetylase inhibitor valproic acid attenuates phospholipase Cγ2 and IgE-mediated mast cell activation.
Mast cell activation through the high-affinity IgE receptor (FcεRI) plays a central role in allergic reactions. FcεRI-mediated activation triggers multiple signaling pathways leading to degranulation and synthesis of different inflammatory mediators. IgE-mediated mast cell activation can be modulated by different molecules, including several drugs. Herein, we investigated the immunomodulatory activity of the histone deacetylase inhibitor valproic acid (VPA) on IgE-mediated mast cell activation. To this end, bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMC) were sensitized with IgE and treated with VPA followed by FcεRI cross-linking. The results indicated that VPA reduced mast cell IgE-dependent degranulation and cytokine release. VPA also induced a significant reduction in the cell surface expression of FcεRI and CD117, but not other mast cell surface molecules. Interestingly, VPA treatment inhibited the phosphorylation of PLCγ2, a key signaling molecule involved in IgE-mediated degranulation and cytokine secretion. However, VPA did not affect the phosphorylation of other key components of the FcεRI signaling pathway, such as Syk, Akt, ERK1/2, or p38. Altogether, our data demonstrate that VPA affects PLCγ2 phosphorylation, which in turn decreases IgE-mediated mast cell activation. These results suggest that VPA might be a key modulator of allergic reactions and might be a promising therapeutic candidate
The Effective Lagrangian for Bulk Fermions in Models with Extra Dimensions
We compute the dimension 6 effective Lagrangian arising from the tree level
integration of an arbitrary number of bulk fermions in models with warped extra
dimensions. The coefficients of the effective operators are written in terms of
simple integrals of the metric and are valid for arbitrary warp factors, with
or without an infrared brane, and for a general Higgs profile. All relevant
tree level fermion effects in electroweak and flavor observables can be

Tomography of Electrospun Carbon Nanotube Polymeric Blends by Focus Ion Beam: Alignment and Phase Separation Analysis from Multicontrast Electron Imaging

Multimodal focused ion beam (FIB) imaging on a polydimethylsiloxane/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) electrospun composite has been applied to discriminate the phase-separated polymer blend and identify MWCNT fillers. Upon tomographic reconstruction, this discrimination has been possible through both atomic number and voltage contrast, the latter being enabled by preferential MWCNT segregation to PMMA. This study suggests that electrospinning could be affecting not only MWCNT alignment but also phase separation dynamics of immiscible polymers, yielding a porous structure throughout the fibers. This work opens the door to correlative materials science in polymer nanocomposites through FIB tomography, where voltage contrast is a main actor. (Figure presented.)
Heavy-light decay topologies as a new strategy to discover a heavy gluon
We study the collider phenomenology of the lightest Kaluza-Klein excitation
of the gluon, G*, in theories with a warped extra dimension. We do so by means
of a two-site effective lagrangian which includes only the lowest-lying spin-1
and spin-1/2 resonances. We point out the importance of the decays of G* to one
SM plus one heavy fermion, that were overlooked in the previous literature. It
turns out that, when kinematically allowed, such heavy-light decays are
powerful channels for discovering the G*. In particular, we present a
parton-level Montecarlo analysis of the final state Wtb that follows from the
decay of G* to one SM top or bottom quark plus its heavy partner. We find that
at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV and with 10 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, the LHC can
discover a KK gluon with mass in the range M_{G*} = (1.8 - 2.2) TeV if its
coupling to a pair of light quarks is g_{G*qqbar} = (0.2-0.5) g_3. The same
process is also competitive for the discovery of the top and bottom partners as
well. We find, for example, that the LHC at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV can discover a 1
TeV KK bottom quark with an integrated luminosity of (5.3 - 0.61) fb^{-1} for

Regulatory interactions between IRG resistance GTPases in the cellular response to Toxoplasma gondii
Members of the immunity-related GTPase (IRG) family are interferon-inducible resistance factors against a broad spectrum of intracellular pathogens including Toxoplasma gondii. The molecular mechanisms governing the function and regulation of the IRG resistance system are largely unknown. We find that IRG proteins function in a system of direct, nucleotide-dependent regulatory interactions between family members. After interferon induction but before infection, the three members of the GMS subfamily of IRG proteins, Irgm1, Irgm2 and Irgm3, which possess an atypical nucleotide-binding site, regulate the intracellular positioning of the conventional GKS subfamily members, Irga6 and Irgb6. Following infection, the normal accumulation of Irga6 protein at the parasitophorous vacuole membrane (PVM) is nucleotide dependent and also depends on the presence of all three GMS proteins. We present evidence that an essential role of the GMS proteins in this response is control of the nucleotide-bound state of the GKS proteins, preventing their GTP-dependent activation before infection. Accumulation of IRG proteins at the PVM has previously been shown to be associated with a block in pathogen replication: our results relate for the first time the enzymatic properties of IRG proteins to their role in pathogen resistance
Evolutionary Dynamics of Co-Segregating Gene Clusters Associated with Complex Diseases
BACKGROUND: The distribution of human disease-associated mutations is not random across the human genome. Despite the fact that natural selection continually removes disease-associated mutations, an enrichment of these variants can be observed in regions of low recombination. There are a number of mechanisms by which such a clustering could occur, including genetic perturbations or demographic effects within different populations. Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) suggest that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with complex disease traits are not randomly distributed throughout the genome, but tend to cluster in regions of low recombination. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we investigated whether deleterious mutations have accumulated in regions of low recombination due to the impact of recent positive selection and genetic hitchhiking. Using publicly available data on common complex diseases and population demography, we observed an enrichment of hitchhiked disease associations in conserved gene clusters subject to selection pressure. Evolutionary analysis revealed that these conserved gene clusters arose by multiple concerted rearrangements events across the vertebrate lineage. We observed distinct clustering of disease-associated SNPs in evolutionary rearranged regions of low recombination and high gene density, which harbor genes involved in immunity, that is, the interleukin cluster on 5q31 or RhoA on 3p21. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that multiple lineage specific rearrangements led to a physical clustering of functionally related and linked genes exhibiting an enrichment of susceptibility loci for complex traits. This implies that besides recent evolutionary adaptations other evolutionary dynamics have played a role in the formation of linked gene clusters associated with complex disease traits
Promoção, prevenção e cuidado da hipertensão arterial no Brasil
OBJETIVO: Estimar a prevalência de ações de promoção, prevenção e cuidado da hipertensão arterial em adultos e identificar sua associação com estado descompensado de hipertensão. MÉTODOS: Estudo epidemiológico transversal de base populacional realizado por meio de entrevista com 12.324 adultos, de 20 a 59 anos, em 100 municípios brasileiros. As variáveis independentes, consideradas como promoção, prevenção e cuidado, foram: ter recebido orientações sobre a manutenção do peso ideal e sobre atividade física; ter consultado um médico e ter realizado eletrocardiograma no último ano. Pressão arterial acima de 140/90 mmHg foi considerada estado descompensado, sendo a variável dependente para a avaliação da qualidade do cuidado. RESULTADOS: Do total, 16,3% (n = 2.004) referiram diagnóstico médico de hipertensão. As maiores prevalências de hipertensão foram observadas na categoria de idade de 50 a 59 anos, concentradas nas regiões Sudeste e Centro-Oeste. Mais da metade (66,1%) esteve em consulta médica por hipertensão no último ano, da qual metade (52,4%) realizou eletrocardiograma. Dos hipertensos que tiveram sua pressão arterial aferida na entrevista (74,6%), menos da metade (42,4%) apresentava cifras tensionais descompensadas. CONCLUSÕES: Não houve associação entre haver consultado médico no último ano e cifras tensionais descompensadas. A proporção de hipertensos descompensados foi significativamente menor entre os que foram orientados para manter o peso ideal, realizar atividade física e os que fizeram eletrocardiograma. Ser do sexo masculino, ter idade acima de 40 anos e habitar na região Sul mostraram-se associados a estado descompensado da hipertensão.OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of promotion, prevention and arterial hypertension care actions in adults and to identify their association with decompensated hypertension. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted by interviewing 12,324 adults aged from 20 to 59 years, in 100 Brazilian cities. The independent variables considered as promotion, prevention and hypertension care were as follows: to have received guidance on ideal weight maintenance and physical activity practice; to have consulted a doctor; and to have had an electrocardiogram performed in the previous year. A blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm/Hg was considered to be decompensated, being the dependent variable adopted to assess quality of care. RESULTS: Of all participants, 16.3% (n = 2,004) reported a medical diagnosis of hypertension. The highest prevalences of hypertension were observed in the 50 to 59 year age group, primarily in the Southeast and Center-West regions. More than half (66.1%) of participants had a medical consultation about hypertension in the previous year, of which half (52.4%) had an electrocardiogram. Of all those with hypertension who had their blood pressure measured during interview (74.6%), less than half (42.4%) had decompensated values. CONCLUSIONS: There was no association between having consulted a doctor in the previous year and decompensated blood pressure values. The proportion of decompensated hypertensive participants was significantly lower among those who had received guidance on ideal weight maintenance and physical activity practice and those who had had an electrocardiogram performed. Growth of Comb-like ZnO Nanostructures for Dye-sensitized Solar Cells Applications
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated by using well-crystallized ZnO nanocombs directly grown onto the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) via noncatalytic thermal evaporation process. The thin films of as-grown ZnO nanocombs were used as photoanode materials to fabricate the DSSCs, which exhibited an overall light to electricity conversion efficiency of 0.68% with a fill factor of 34%, short-circuit current of 3.14 mA/cm2, and open-circuit voltage of 0.671 V. To the best of our knowledge, this is first report in which thin film of ZnO nanocombs was used as photoanode materials to fabricate the DSSCs
