    Heavy rains triggering flash floods in urban environment: A case from Chiavari (Genoa metropolitan area, Italy)

    Between 10th and 11th November, 2014, heavy rainfall over a short period fell on the eastern Genoa metropolitan area. The geohydrological event had important ground effects, among them the simultaneous flooding of Entella and Rupinaro streams, in Chiavari city. In lower Lavagna valley, the main tributary of the Entella, a landslide caused two casualties, while serious damage to buildings and infrastructures were registered in Chiavari\u2019s Old Town and in the nearby communities of Carasco and Cogorno. In the Entella basin, the rainfall peaked at 60 mm/hour and accumulated 220 mm in six hours. The levels of the streams rose instantly, showing concentration times of less than an hour. The Entella rose seven meters, flooding Carasco, Cogorno, and the Caperana neighborhood of Chiavari. Flash flooding of the Rupinaro stream caused water to rise to 1.5 m in Chiavari\u2019s historic core. Analyses were carried out of the weather conditions and the ground effects of the events; in addition, studies were made of the main causes of the geo-hydrological risk. In particular, variations in climate and uncontrolled urban development were the cause of increased geo-hydrological hazards and vulnerability of this area, historically subject to flooding. Such conditions of risk are unacceptable, and urgent measures are required to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall events

    Landslide distribution and size in response to Quaternary fault activity: the Peloritani Range, NE Sicily, Italy

    Landslides contribute to dismantle active mountain ranges and faults control the location of landslides. Yet, evidence of the long-term, regional dependency of landslides on active faults is limited. Previous studies focused on the transient effects of earthquakes on slope stability in compressive and transcurrent regimes. Here we show that in the Peloritani range, NE Sicily, Italy, one of the fastest uplifting areas in the Mediterranean, a clear geographical association exists between large bedrock landslides and active normal faults of the Messina Straits graben. By interpreting aerial photographs, we mapped 1590 landslides and sackungs and 626 fault elements and their facets in a 300 km2 area in the eastern part of the range. We used the new landslide and fault information, in combination with prior geological and seismic information, to investigate the association between bedrock landslides and faults. We find that the distribution and abundance of landslides is related to the presence of large active normal faults, and matches the pattern of the local historical seismicity. Landslide material is more abundant along the East Peloritani Fault System where the long-term activity of the faults, measured by the average yearly geological moment rate, is larger than in the West Peloritani Fault System where landslides are less abundant. Along the fault systems landslide material concentrates where the cumulated fault throws are largest. We conclude that large landslides and their cumulated volume are sensitive to local rates of tectonic deformation, and discriminate the deformation of the single fault segments that dissect the Peloritani range. Our findings are a direct test of landscape evolution models that predict higher rates of landslide activity near active faults. Our work opens up the possibility of exploiting accurate landslide and fault maps, in combination with geological and seismic information, to characterize the long-term seismic history of poorly instrumented active regions.     ABSTRACTWe present a photo-geological map for the 185 km2 fault-bounded, Montefalco Basin, Umbria, Central Italy. The basin formed in the Quaternary in response to extensional tectonics dissecting folds and thrusts of the northern Apennines range. To prepare the 1:25,000 geological map, we integrated geological and morphological information obtained through the visual analysis of three sets of aerial photographs of different age, the collection of new field data, and the review of pre-existing surface and sub-surface geological data. We show that systematic interpretation of aerial photographs contributed to improving the geological mapping, providing information not readily available through traditional field mapping. We expect that the new map will be used for different types of geological and geomorphological investigations, including studies of active tectonic, Quaternary morpho-tectonics, sedimentological and stratigraphic analyses, mining and exploration investigations, and the analysis of landslide..

    Italian children's accounts of the lockdown. Insights and perspectives

    COVID-19 lockdown-imposed restrictions emerged as a risk to children's well-being. However, the extant literature often ignored children's experiences, emotions, struggles, hopes, and expectations. Based on a large sample of Italian students (N = 906; mean age = 9.4 years, 48.8% female), we drew data from a post-lockdown school re-entry program where students completed narrative activities in 2020. These narratives underwent quantitative content analysis according to gender and school level. Overall, children reported mixed feelings about the lockdown; they felt safe at home but also experienced fear and missed their friends, school, and freedom. Screen-time, technology and friendships helped, but children struggled to make sense of the events. Our findings show how children attempted to make sense of the lockdown experience and may provide key information for the development of community coping programs to help children facing crises in the future

    Total colectomy for cancer: analysis of factors linked to patients' age.

    Total colectomy (TC) is a valid option for cancer treatment in selected cases. Emergency presentation, association to familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or intestinal bowel disease (IBD), hereditary non-polyposis cancer (HNPCC), and synchronous tumors are the common indications to TC for cancer. Despite potential high morbidity and mortality rates for worse general health conditions of the advanced age it has even suggested for elderly patients. We reviewed our experience to analyze the current role of TC comparing different results between young and elderly patients. During the period 1990-2012, 76 patients were operated on TC for cancer. Patients were divided in two groups according to the age [65 years old - group B (elderly)] and were compared their systemic and surgical complication, considering the presence of comorbidities, ASA score, lifestyle habits, elective or emergency presentation. Morbidity rate was 7.7% and 38.8% in young and elderly patients respectively.21 systemic complications (3 in group A and 18 in group B) occurred in 17 patients (22.36%) (with the coexistence of two complications in 4 patients belonging to the group B. There were 6 surgical complications (7.9%) (3 in group A and 3 in group B): anastomotic leakage 3, major wound infections 2, postoperative bleeding 1; no intra-abdominal abscess were observed. In 2 cases (2.6%) (1 anastomotic leak and 1 intra-abdominal postoperative hemorrhage) was needed a reoperation. We observed only 2 deaths in the elderly. High ASA score and emergency were associated with worst results. Systemic complications were more frequent in elderly patients cause of significant comorbidities, while the incidence of surgical complications was similar and according to literature. Besides the classic indications, it is a viable surgical option also in cancer associated with complicated diverticulitis. Our data show that TC is a safe and effective procedure providing good results even in elderly patients, when combined with a careful preoperative evaluation and age is not an absolute controindication to this procedur

    R0 surgical resection of giant dedifferentiated retroperitoneal liposarcomas in the COVID era with and without nephrectomy: A case report

    : Retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPSs) are rare findings that can grow into large masses without eliciting severe symptoms. At present, surgical resection is the only radical therapy, whenever it can be performed with the aim to achieve a complete removal of the tumor. The present report describes two consecutive cases of RPSs that resulted in dedifferentiated liposarcomas (DDLPSs) and these patients underwent R0 surgical resection with and without a nephron-sparing procedure. The diagnostic workup, the surgical approach, the impact of late surgical management due to the COVID pandemic and the latest literature on the topic are discussed and analyzed. The patients, who refused to undergo any medical examination during the prior 2 years due to the COVID pandemic, were admitted to Federico II University Hospital (Naples, Italy) complaining about weight loss and general abdominal discomfort. In the first case, a primitive giant abdominal right neoplasm of retroperitoneal origin enveloping and medializing the right kidney was observed. The second patient had a similar primitive retroperitoneal giant left neoplasm, which did not affect the kidney. Given the characteristics of the masses and the absence of distant metastases, after a multidisciplinary discussion, radical surgical removal was carried out for both patients. The lesions appeared well-defined from the surrounding tissues, and markedly compressed all the adjacent organs, without signs of infiltration. In the first patient, the right kidney was surrounded and undetachable from the tumor and it was removed en bloc with the mass. The second patient benefited from a nephron-sparing resection, due to the existence of a clear cleavage plane. The postoperative courses were uneventful. Both the histological examinations were oriented towards a DDLPS and both patients benefited from adjuvant chemotherapy. In conclusion, the treatment of giant RPS is still challenging and requires multidisciplinary treatment as well as, when possible, radical surgical removal. The lack of tissue infiltration and the avoidance of excision or reconstruction of major organs (including the kidney) could lead to an easier postoperative course and an improved prognosis. When possible, surgical management of recurrences or incompletely resected masses must be pursued. Since the COVID pandemic caused limited medicalization of a number of population groups and delayed diagnosis of other oncologic diseases, an increased number of DDLPSs could be expected in the near future

    Comparative life cycle assessment of Fe2O3-based fibers as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries

    AbstractSodium-ion batteries (SIBs) potentially represent a more sustainable, less expensive and environmentally friendly alternative to lithium-ion batteries. The development of new low-cost, non-toxic, highly performing electrode materials is the key point for the SIB technology advances. This study develops a basic life cycle assessment (LCA) model for the evaluation of the production by electrospinning of iron (III) oxide-based fibers to be used as anode materials in SIBs. Indeed, it has been recently demonstrated that electrospun silicon-doped iron (III) oxide (Fe2O3) fibers exhibit outstanding electrochemical properties and gravimetric capacities never achieved before for pure Fe2O3-based anodes. The LCA methodology is utilized in order to analyze the environmental burdens (from raw material extraction to manufacturing process) of these electrode materials. The simplified comparative LCA studies, conducted to assess the environmental impacts associated with the electrospun Fe2O3 and Fe2O3:Si fibers at the same cell performance, demonstrate that the Si-doped anode material, which exhibits better electrochemical performance with respect to the undoped one, has also lower impact for each category of damage, namely human health, ecosystem quality and resources

    Central Pancreatectomy to Treat a Giant Solid Pseudopapillary Tumor of the Pancreas - An Uncommon Surgical Procedure for a Rare Tumor: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

    Context Solid pseudopapillary tumor is a rare tumor of the pancreas. Solid pseudopapillary tumor is nine times more frequent in the body and tail than in the head of the pancreas. It usually does not reach a large size. The majority of patients are young females and most of them are asymptomatic. Neoplasms of the midportion of the pancreas, not suitable for enucleation, can be treated with central pancreatectomy. The central pancreatectomy is commonly proposed for tumors that do not exceed 5 cm of dimension. Case report We report a case of seventeen-years-old woman who was admitted to our institution with abdominal pain and a palpable mass in the left hypochondrial area. US, CT and RMN scan revealed a giant (> 10 cm.) well-demarcated and encapsulated solid mass in the body of the pancreas, with a great amount of intralesional cystic-hemorrhagic component. The patient was treated by a variant of central pancreatectomy without splenectomy and pancreatic duct reconstruction. There was no metastatic disease in either the liver or peritoneum. The histological analysis identifies the tumor as a Solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas. Fifteen years' follow-up period showed no recurrence. Conclusions Solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas behaves like a potentially malignant tumor and has good prognosis. Surgical resection is dictated by tumor location and is the treatment of choice. The increasing interest in parenchyma-sparing pancreatic surgery has found large application in treatment of Solid pseudopapillary tumor, with the aim of preserving exocrine and endocrine pancreatic function, and achieving a better quality of life after surgery. Considering the low malignant potential, the central pancreatectomy can be considered an excellent therapeutic strategy for the treatment of this type of tumor also when they have giant dimensions and are localized in the central-pancreatic portion
