The scaled up chemical reactor for a SiF4-Na reaction system is examined for increased reaction rate and production rate. The reaction system which now produces 5 kg batches of mixed Si and NaF is evaluated. The reactor design is described along with an analysis of the increased capacity of the Na chip feeder. The reactor procedure is discussed and Si coalescence in the reaction products is diagnosed

Optimization studies were carried out for the SiF4-Na reaction with solid Na feed. The goals of the study were the consistent production of high purity reaction products and the gathering of relevant information needed to scale-up the reactor. Parameters studied include: (1) effect of surface to volume ratio of Na slices on the extent of reaction; (2) effect of Na surface oxidation on the extent of reaction; (3) effect of external heating on the extent of SiF4-Na reaction; (4) effect of Na slice addition rate on extent of the reaction; and (5) SiF4-Na reaction - high pressure experiments. An investigation was also made of the possible role played by NaF as a fluxing agent during the separation of silicon by melting of the reaction product (Si + NaF) mixture. Since silicon can be produced by the thermite reaction between Na2SiF6 and Na, studies were initiated to gather information on parameters which control the efficiency of the thermite reaction

Silicon obtained by the SiF4-Na reaction was analyzed by spark source mass spectrometry (SSMS). Silicon samples prepared from induction melted powder were evaluated for electrical properties using four point probe conductivity and thermoelectric methods. SiF4-Na reaction under P sub SiF4 greater than 1 atmosphere. The amount of silicon produced was increased from 25 g per batch (in the glass reactor) to greater than 70 g per batch in the stainless steel reactor. The study of the effects of reaction variables such as P sub SiF4 and maximum temperature attained on the particle size of silicon powder showed that the silicon particle size tends to grow larger with increasing pressure of the SiF4 gas in the reaction system

Silicon was produced by alternate pulse feeding of the reactants SiF4 gas and liquid sodium. The average temperature in the reactor could be controlled, by regulating the amount of reactant in each pulse. Silicon tetrafluoride gas was analyzed by mass spectrometry to determine the nature and amount of contained volatile impurities which included silicon oxyfluorides, sulfur oxyfluorides, and sulfur dioxide. Sodium metal was analyzed by emission spectrography, and it was found to contain only calcium and copper as impurities

The corruption of theories in practices: the case of the field of professional training

[ES] La inclusión generalizada de prácticas en los diseños de formación profesional lleva ya décadas. Sin duda, el reconocimiento teórico-práctico de su importancia responde a una larga tradición que tiene hitos clave en la corriente de la escuela nueva y en los aportes del constructivismo. En esa dirección, más recientemente, investigaciones, experiencias y aportes teóricos de las últimas tres décadas han reforzado la toma de conciencia sobre su importancia por parte de responsables de las políticas de formación. No obstante, las dificultades persistentes hacen necesario avanzar en el análisis de algunos nudos obturantes. El artículo desarrolla una hipótesis, sustentada en investigaciones y experiencias de un grupo de docentes de práctica que en Argentina se viene dedicando a esta problemática desde hace décadas. A tal fin, explicitaré, en primer lugar, el estado de desarrollo del campo de las prácticas en los diseños de formación profesional en Argentina. A continuación, fundamentaré la hipótesis de que un obstáculo persistente tiene que ver con la fuerte internalización subjetiva y social de la concepción instrumentalista de la práctica, hecho que no es superable con la sola implementación de nuevos diseños. Finalmente, comentaré experiencias que intentan acompañar los cambios curriculares con acciones sistemáticas de formación en concepciones epistemológicas de práctica alternativas a la concepción instrumentalista de fuerte arraigo positivista y con acciones socializadas en comunidades de práctica. Las experiencias han surgido de la convicción de que, tanto el desarrollo profesional formalizado en propuestas de posgrado como proyectos autogestionados pueden ser dispositivos posibilitadores de revisión de las concepciones arraigadas acríticamente.  [EN] The widespread inclusion of internships in vocational training designs has been going on for decades. Undoubtedly, the theoretical-practical recognition of their importance responds to a long tradition that has key milestones in the current of the new school and in the contributions of constructivism. In this sense, more recently, research, experiences, and theoretical contributions of the last three decades have strengthened awareness of its importance on the part of those responsible for training policies. Nevertheless, persistent difficulties make it necessary to advance in the analysis of some of the bottlenecks. The article develops a hypothesis, supported by research and experiences of a group of teachers of practice that in Argentina has been dedicated to this problem for decades. To this end, I will first explain the state of development of the field of practices in professional training designs in Argentina. Next, I will base the hypothesis that a persistent obstacle has to do with the strong subjective and social internalization of the instrumentalist conception of practice, a fact that cannot be overcome by the mere implementation of new designs. Finally, I will comment on experiences that attempt to accompany curricular changes with systematic training actions in alternative epistemological conceptions of practice to the instrumentalist conception with strong positivist roots and with socialized actions in communities of practice. The experiences have arisen from the conviction that both professional development formalized in postgraduate proposals and self-managed projects can be enabling devices for revising conceptions that are uncritically rooted. Sanjurjo, L. Topics covered include: (1) development of a simplified feed system for the Na used in the Na-SiF4 reactor; (2) production of high purity silicon through the reduction of sodium fluosilicate with sodium metal; (3) the leaching process for recovering silicon from the reaction products of the SiF4-Na reaction; and (4) silicon separation by the melting of the reaction product

A modular cloning toolkit for genome editing in plants

Background CRISPR/Cas has recently become a widely used genome editing tool in various organisms, including plants. Applying CRISPR/Cas often requires delivering multiple expression units into plant and hence there is a need for a quick and easy cloning procedure. The modular cloning (MoClo), based on the Golden Gate (GG) method, has enabled development of cloning systems with standardised genetic parts, e.g. promoters, coding sequences or terminators, that can be easily interchanged and assembled into expression units, which in their own turn can be further assembled into higher order multigene constructs. Results Here we present an expanded cloning toolkit that contains 103 modules encoding a variety of CRISPR/Cas-based nucleases and their corresponding guide RNA backbones. Among other components, the toolkit includes a number of promoters that allow expression of CRISPR/Cas nucleases (or any other coding sequences) and their guide RNAs in monocots and dicots. As part of the toolkit, we present a set of modules that enable quick and facile assembly of tRNA-sgRNA polycistronic units without a PCR step involved. We also demonstrate that our tRNA-sgRNA system is functional in wheat protoplasts. Conclusions We believe the presented CRISPR/Cas toolkit is a great resource that will contribute towards wider adoption of the CRISPR/Cas genome editing technology and modular cloning by researchers across the plant science community

Análisis del grado de difusión de los ODS en las memorias de sostenibilidad orientado a la estrategia de comunicación corporativa

[EN] The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are at the heart of the management of public and private enterprises. Organizations have incorporated the SDGs into their business strategy by developing actions that they disseminate in their reports. In the last decade, academic research has paid special attention to this development, publishing a growing number of studies on the subject with the emergence of a specific line of research in the area of sustainability: sustainability reporting. In this context, this paper aims to show a methodology that serves as a tool to analyze the disclosure of SDGs in the sustainability reports. This methodology has three stages. First, a lexicographic analysis of sustainability reports has been carried out, second, a correspondence analysis, and third, outlining through “guided questions” how the information obtained can be useful to analyze SDG communication strategy. For further illustration the methodology has been applied to a company in the Spanish agri-food sector: Ebro Foods. This work has both academic and professional implications by providing a guideline for SDG dissemination analysis in sustainability reports and, on the other hand, by providing the business world with an analysis tool that serves to improve communication strategies in the field of sustainability.[ES] Los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) ocupan un lugar central en la gestión de las empresas públicas y privadas. Las organizaciones han incorporado los ODS en su estrategia de negocio desarrollando acciones que difunden en sus memorias. En la última década, la investigación académica ha prestado especial atención a esta realidad publicándose un creciente número de estudios al respecto y apareciendo una línea de investigación específica en el área de la sostenibilidad: sustainability reporting. En este contexto, este trabajo tiene como objetivo presentar una metodología que sirva como herramienta para analizar el grado de difusión de los ODS en las memorias de sostenibilidad. Dicha metodología consta de tres etapas: en primer lugar, un análisis lexicográfico de las memorias de sostenibilidad; en segundo lugar, un análisis de correspondencias y; finalmente, se muestra, en forma de preguntas-guía cómo la información obtenida puede ser de ayuda para la estrategia de comunicación de los ODS. Para ilustrar esta metodología, se ha aplicado en los informes de sostenibilidad del período 2016-2021 en una empresa del sector agroalimentario: Ebro Foods. Este trabajo tiene implicaciones tanto de tipo teórico como práctico, al aportar una pauta de análisis de la difusión de los ODS en las memorias de sostenibilidad y, por otra parte, al facilitar al mundo empresarial una herramienta de análisis que sirva para mejorar las estrategias de comunicación en el ámbito de la sostenibilidad
