Objective: Present study involved identification of offending out-door aero-allergens and associated genetic pathway in nasso-bronchial asthma among Kolkata population. Methods: Skin-prick test was done among 950 asthmatic patients against 11 common aero-allergens and total serum IgE concentration was measured. PCR-RFLP was done in patients and non-asthmatic control (n=220 in each) to characterize functional polymorphism, C(-159)T, of CD14, a positional candidate gene for allergy. Association of genetic polymorphisms was made with clinico-pathological conditions. Results: We identified Cocos nucifera as the most common aero-allergen sensitizer among atopic patients in Kolkata. Patients with childhood-onset asthma were significantly more sensitive towards aero-allergens and had significantly higher serum IgE level than those of adult-onset (p< 0.0001). No significant difference was found in distribution of SNP genotypes of CD14 among case and control (p=0.178). However among patients, frequency of C allele is significantly higher in childhood-onset group thanthat of adult-onset and concordantly in former CC genotype was associated with significant higher level of serum IgE than CT and TT.Conclusion: In Kolkata, pollen is a common out-door aero-allergen and Cocos nucifera is predominant among pollens. Childhood- onset and adult-onset of asthma showed significant difference in allergen sensitivity as well as genetic background with respect to CD14 polymorphism. Keywords: Asthma, aero-allergen, skin prick test, total IgE, CD14 gene polymorphis

Characterization of PARIS LaBr3_3(Ce)-NaI(Tl) phoswich detectors upto EÎłE_\gamma ∌\sim 22 MeV

In order to understand the performance of the PARIS (Photon Array for the studies with Radioactive Ion and Stable beams) detector, detailed characterization of two individual phoswich (LaBr3_3(Ce)-NaI(Tl)) elements has been carried out. The detector response is investigated over a wide range of EÎłE_{\gamma} = 0.6 to 22.6 MeV using radioactive sources and employing 11B(p,Îł)^{11}B(p,\gamma) reaction at EpE_p = 163 keV and EpE_p = 7.2 MeV. The linearity of energy response of the LaBr3_3(Ce) detector is tested upto 22.6 MeV using three different voltage dividers. The data acquisition system using CAEN digitizers is set up and optimized to get the best energy and time resolution. The energy resolution of ∌\sim 2.1% at EÎłE_\gamma = 22.6~MeV is measured for the configuration giving best linearity upto high energy. Time resolution of the phoswich detector is measured with a 60^{60}Co source after implementing CFD algorithm for the digitized pulses and is found to be excellent (FWHM ∌\sim 315~ps). In order to study the effect of count rate on detectors, the centroid position and width of the EÎłE_{\gamma} = 835~keV peak were measured upto 220 kHz count rate. The measured efficiency data with radioactive sources are in good agreement with GEANT4 based simulations. The total energy spectrum after the add-back of energy signals in phoswich components is also presented.Comment: Accepted in JINS

Exploring novel correlations in trilepton channels at the LHC for the minimal supersymmetric inverse seesaw model

We investigate signatures of the minimal supersymmetric inverse seesaw model at the large hadron collider (LHC) with three isolated leptons and large missing energy (3\ell + \mET or 2\ell + 1\tau + \mET, with \ell=e,\mu) in the final state. This signal has its origin in the decay of chargino-neutralino (\chpm1\ntrl2) pair, produced in pp collisions. The two body decays of the lighter chargino into a charged lepton and a singlet sneutrino has a characteristic decay pattern which is correlated with the observed large atmospheric neutrino mixing angle. This correlation is potentially observable at the LHC by looking at the ratios of cross sections of the trilepton + \mET channels in certain flavour specific modes. We show that even after considering possible leading standard model backgrounds these final states can lead to reasonable discovery significance at the LHC with both 7 TeV and 14 TeV center-of-mass energy.Comment: 28 pages, 9 .eps figures. 3 new figures and discussions on LHC observables added, minor modifications in text and in the abstract, 23 new references added, matches with the published version in JHE

Report from Working Group 3: Beyond the standard model physics at the HL-LHC and HE-LHC

This is the third out of five chapters of the final report [1] of the Workshop on Physics at HL-LHC, and perspectives on HE-LHC [2]. It is devoted to the study of the potential, in the search for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, of the High Luminosity (HL) phase of the LHC, defined as 33 ab−1^{-1} of data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, and of a possible future upgrade, the High Energy (HE) LHC, defined as 1515 ab−1^{-1} of data at a centre-of-mass energy of 27 TeV. We consider a large variety of new physics models, both in a simplified model fashion and in a more model-dependent one. A long list of contributions from the theory and experimental (ATLAS, CMS, LHCb) communities have been collected and merged together to give a complete, wide, and consistent view of future prospects for BSM physics at the considered colliders. On top of the usual standard candles, such as supersymmetric simplified models and resonances, considered for the evaluation of future collider potentials, this report contains results on dark matter and dark sectors, long lived particles, leptoquarks, sterile neutrinos, axion-like particles, heavy scalars, vector-like quarks, and more. Particular attention is placed, especially in the study of the HL-LHC prospects, to the detector upgrades, the assessment of the future systematic uncertainties, and new experimental techniques. The general conclusion is that the HL-LHC, on top of allowing to extend the present LHC mass and coupling reach by 20−50%20-50\% on most new physics scenarios, will also be able to constrain, and potentially discover, new physics that is presently unconstrained. Moreover, compared to the HL-LHC, the reach in most observables will, generally more than double at the HE-LHC, which may represent a good candidate future facility for a final test of TeV-scale new physics

Exploring the Dynamic Heterogeneity at the Interface of a Protein in Aqueous Ionic Liquid Solutions

Room temperature molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the globular protein α-lactalbumin in aqueous solutions containing BMIM (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) based ionic liquids (ILs) with a series of Hofmeister anions have been carried out. In particular, effects of anions of different shapes/sizes and hydrophobic/hydrophilic characters, namely, thiocyanate (SCN–), dicyanamide (DCA–), methyl sulfate (MS–), triflate (TFO–), and bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide (TF2N–) on the heterogeneous dynamic environment at the interface around the protein have been explored. The calculations revealed exchange of population between water and IL cation–anion components beyond the first layer of bound water molecules at the protein surface. Further, increasingly restricted diffusivity of the IL components and water around the protein has been found to be associated with a longer time scale for the onset of dynamic heterogeneity at the interface. Restricted diffusivity of water molecules at the interface in the presence of the ILs has been found to be correlated with the longer time scale of structural relaxations of protein–water hydrogen bonds at the interface. More importantly, the time scale associated with the reorientations of the anions has been found to be anticorrelated with their translational diffusivity, with the effect being more at the interface as compared to the bulk IL solutions. It is demonstrated that the nonuniform ability of the anions to form hydrogen bonds with water due to their differential shapes and hydrophilic characters is the origin of such anticorrelation
