One for the Money, Two for the Show

AbstractThis essay traces the evolution of trends in the historiography on South Asia over the past quarter-century, focusing on the trans-Atlantic axis. The rise and transformation of subaltern studies from the early 1980s, it is argued, posed a major challenge to the institutional organization of South Asian history, leading eventually in turn to the redefinition of a «Cambridge School» quite different from that which had existed in the 1970s. Furthermore, the effects of economic liberalization in India and the growing importance of a South Asian diaspora in the US, have led to an entirely new market situation. The essay is thus a participant-observer’s attempt to relate questions of epistemology to an application of the model of duopoly associated with analysts such as Cournot.RésuméCet essai a pour but de tracer l’évolution des grandes tendances dans l’historiographie sur l’Asie du Sud au cours du quart de siècle passé, se concentrant sur l’axe transatlantique. L’élévation et la transformation des subaltern studies depuis le début des années 1980 a posé un défi important à l’organisation institutionnelle de l’histoire indienne, conduisant par la suite à la redéfinition d’une Cambridge School très différente de ce qui avait existé dans les années 1970. technical reportThis report describes in detail, the ongoing design and implementation of a transformation system, for compiling specifications of integrated circuits into silicon. There are many levels in this process, and the area that we focus on produces target specifications of asynchronous and synchronous control units and the associated data paths. This target is compatible with the ASSASSIN system [1] which generates layouts from specifications of control units. The input to our system is an Ada program (restricted to a single Procedure Body) which specifies a certain computation. The Procedure Body is itself assumed to contain no package or task declarations or inatantiations and no Entry call statements. The present paper examines the extent of the spread of the use offirearms in Southern India in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the role played by the Portuguese, especially by private Portuguese. The sources used are largely European, supplemented however by some literary material in Telugu and Sanskrit, generated in the courts of the so-called “Nayaka” kingdoms of 16th and 17th century Tamilnadu. Cet article cherche à replacer dans son contexte l'émergence de la diaspora universitaire d'Asie du Sud de ces trois dernières décennies en sciences sociales, telle qu’elle a été observée à Delhi d’abord, puis à Paris. Il affirme que l’économie doit être considérée quelque peu différemment des autres sciences sociales au vu du postulat de « neutralité culturelle » de cette discipline. Cet article suggère également que les prétentions des universitaires de la diaspora de parler d'une voix qui fait autorité « de l'Asie du Sud » doivent être considérées avec prudence, et que leur proéminence pourrait bien faire écran à ceux travaillant depuis l’Asie du Sud.Speaking for Another. – The paper seeks to contextualize the emergence of the South Asian academic diaspora of the past three decades in the social sciences, as seen from first Delhi, and then Paris. It argues that the case of economics must be seen as somewhat different from other social sciences, in view of the claims to “cultural neutrality” of that discipline. The paper also suggests that the claims of diaspora academics to speak authoritatively “for South Asia” must be treated sceptically, and that their prominence may well act as a screen for others, operating from South Asia
