    Correlation Clustering with Same-Cluster Queries Bounded by Optimal Cost

    Several clustering frameworks with interactive (semi-supervised) queries have been studied in the past. Recently, clustering with same-cluster queries has become popular. An algorithm in this setting has access to an oracle with full knowledge of an optimal clustering, and the algorithm can ask the oracle queries of the form, "Does the optimal clustering put vertices u and v in the same cluster?" Due to its simplicity, this querying model can easily be implemented in real crowd-sourcing platforms and has attracted a lot of recent work. In this paper, we study the popular correlation clustering problem (Bansal et al., 2002) under the same-cluster querying framework. Given a complete graph G=(V,E) with positive and negative edge labels, correlation clustering objective aims to compute a graph clustering that minimizes the total number of disagreements, that is the negative intra-cluster edges and positive inter-cluster edges. In a recent work, Ailon et al. (2018b) provided an approximation algorithm for correlation clustering that approximates the correlation clustering objective within (1+epsilon) with O((k^{14} log{n} log{k})/epsilon^6) queries when the number of clusters, k, is fixed. For many applications, k is not fixed and can grow with |V|. Moreover, the dependency of k^14 on query complexity renders the algorithm impractical even for datasets with small values of k. In this paper, we take a different approach. Let C_{OPT} be the number of disagreements made by the optimal clustering. We present algorithms for correlation clustering whose error and query bounds are parameterized by C_{OPT} rather than by the number of clusters. Indeed, a good clustering must have small C_{OPT}. Specifically, we present an efficient algorithm that recovers an exact optimal clustering using at most 2C_{OPT} queries and an efficient algorithm that outputs a 2-approximation using at most C_{OPT} queries. In addition, we show under a plausible complexity assumption, there does not exist any polynomial time algorithm that has an approximation ratio better than 1+alpha for an absolute constant alpha > 0 with o(C_{OPT}) queries. Therefore, our first algorithm achieves the optimal query bound within a factor of 2. We extensively evaluate our methods on several synthetic and real-world datasets using real crowd-sourced oracles. Moreover, we compare our approach against known correlation clustering algorithms that do not perform querying. In all cases, our algorithms exhibit superior performance

    Exploring the Impact of Ketodeoxynonulosonic Acid in Host-Pathogen Interactions Using Uptake and Surface Display by Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae

    Surface expression of the common vertebrate sialic acid (Sia) N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) by commensal and pathogenic microbes appears structurally to represent molecular mimicry of host sialoglycans, facilitating multiple mechanisms of host immune evasion. In contrast, ketodeoxynonulosonic acid (Kdn) is a more ancestral Sia also present in prokaryotic glycoconjugates that are structurally quite distinct from vertebrate sialoglycans. We detected human antibodies against Kdn-terminated glycans, and sialoglycan microarray studies found these anti-Kdn antibodies to be directed against Kdn-sialoglycans structurally similar to those on human cell surface Neu5Ac-sialoglycans. Anti-Kdn-glycan antibodies appear during infancy in a pattern similar to those generated following incorporation of the nonhuman Sia N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) onto the surface of nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi), a human commensal and opportunistic pathogen. NTHi grown in the presence of free Kdn took up and incorporated the Sia into its lipooligosaccharide (LOS). Surface display of the Kdn within NTHi LOS blunted several virulence attributes of the pathogen, including Neu5Ac-mediated resistance to complement and whole blood killing, complement C3 deposition, IgM binding, and engagement of Siglec-9. Upper airway administration of Kdn reduced NTHi infection in human-like Cmah null (Neu5Gc-deficient) mice that express a Neu5Ac-rich sialome. We propose a mechanism for the induction of anti-Kdn antibodies in humans, suggesting that Kdn could be a natural and/or therapeutic Trojan horse that impairs colonization and virulence phenotypes of free Neu5Ac-assimilating human pathogens. IMPORTANCE All cells in vertebrates are coated with a dense array of glycans often capped with sugars called sialic acids. Sialic acids have many functions, including serving as a signal for recognition of self cells by the immune system, thereby guiding an appropriate immune response against foreign nonself and/or damaged cells. Several pathogenic bacteria have evolved mechanisms to cloak themselves with sialic acids and evade immune responses. Here we explore a type of sialic acid called Kdn (ketodeoxynonulosonic acid) that has not received much attention in the past and compare and contrast how it interacts with the immune system. Our results show potential for the use of Kdn as a natural intervention against pathogenic bacteria that take up and coat themselves with external sialic acid from the environment

    Customer Perception of Banking Service Quality: A Study on Jamuna Bank Limited in Sylhet City

    The purpose of the study is to investigate customer perception of service quality of a private bank. In this study five dimensions are used namely responsiveness, reliability, assurance, empathy and tangibles based on SERVPERF (Service Performance) model to investigates the service quality perceptions of customers of a commercial bank. The study reveals that Tangibility is having a highest mean score of SERVPERF (P) score and the bank should concentrate on Empathy as it has the lowest mean score of SERVPERF as well as Reliability. Regarding the association between the demographic variables and the service quality factors, it is seen that there is a significant association. The research provides valuable insights to manager of the bank on the need to continuously enhance service quality.
