    Color Updating on the Apparent Motion Path

    When a static stimulus appears successively at two distant locations, we perceive illusory motion of the stimulus across them–long-range apparent motion (AM). Previous studies have shown that when the apparent motion stimuli differ in shape, interpolation between the two shapes is perceived across the AM path. In contrast, the perceived color during AM has been shown to abruptly change from the color of the first stimulus into that of the second, suggesting interpolation does not occur for color during AM. Here, we report the first evidence to our knowledge, that an interpolated color, distinct from the colors of either apparent motion stimulus, is represented as the intermediate percept on the path of apparent motion. Using carefully chosen target colors—cyan, pink, and lime—that are perceptually and neurally intermediate between blue and green, orange and magenta, and green and orange respectively, we show that detection of a target presented on the apparent motion path was impaired when the color of the target was “in-between” the initial and terminal stimulus colors. Furthermore, we show that this feature-specific masking effect for the intermediate color cannot be accounted for by color similarity between the intermediate color and the color of the terminal inducer. Our findings demonstrate that intermediate colors can be interpolated over the apparent motion trajectory as in the case of shape, possibly involving similar interpolation processes for shape and color during apparent motion

    Quasi-Eigenstate Evolution in Open Chaotic Billiards

    We experimentally studied evolution of quasi-eigenmodes as classical dynamics undergoing a transition from being regular to chaotic in open quantum billiards. In a deformation-variable microcavity we traced all high-Q cavity modes in a wide range of frequency as the cavity deformation increased. By employing an internal parameter we were able to obtain a mode-dynamics diagram at a given deformation, showing avoided crossings between different mode groups, and could directly observe the coupling strengths induced by ray chaos among encountering modes. We also show that the observed mode-dynamics diagrams reflect the underlying classical ray dynamics in the phase space.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Development of deformation-tunable quadrupolar microcavity

    We have developed a technique for realizing a two-dimensional quadrupolar microcavity with its deformation variable from 0% to 20% continuously. We employed a microjet ejected from a noncircular orifice in order to generate a stationary column with modulated quadrupolar deformation in its cross section. Wavelength red shifts of low-order cavity modes due to shape deformation were measured and were found to be in good agreement with the wave calculation for the same deformation, indicating the observed deformation is quadrupolar in nature.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, intended for Rev.     Chaos-assisted nonresonant optical pumping of quadrupole-deformed microlasers

    Efficient nonresonant optical pumping of a high-Q scar mode in a two-dimensional quadrupole-deformed microlaser has been demonstrated based on ray and wave chaos. Three-fold enhancement in the lasing power was achieved at a properly chosen pumping angle.     Impact time control based on time-to-go prediction for sea-skimming antiship missiles

    This paper proposes a novel approach for guidance law design to satisfy the impact-time constraints for a certain class of homing missiles. The proposed guidance law provides proper lateral acceleration commands that make the impact time error converge to zero by the time of impact. This scheme can be applied to any existing guidance law for which a formula of predicted time to go is available. Convergence of time-to-go errors is supported by Lyapunov stability. The optimal guidance law and the impact angle control guidance law are extended by the proposed method for impact-time-control guidance and impact-time-and-angle-control guidance, respectively. The performance of the extended guidance laws is demonstrated by numerical simulation

    Role of S5b/PSMD5 in Proteasome Inhibition Caused by TNF-α/NFκB in Higher Eukaryotes

    SummaryThe ubiquitin-proteasome system is essential for maintaining protein homeostasis. However, proteasome dysregulation in chronic diseases is poorly understood. Through genome-wide cell-based screening using 5,500 cDNAs, a signaling pathway leading to NFκB activation was selected as an inhibitor of 26S proteasome. TNF-α increased S5b (HGNC symbol PSMD5; hereafter S5b/PSMD5) expression via NFκB, and the surplus S5b/PSMD5 directly inhibited 26S proteasome assembly and activity. Downregulation of S5b/PSMD5 abolished TNF-α-induced proteasome inhibition. TNF-α enhanced the interaction of S5b/PSMD5 with S7/PSMC2 in nonproteasome complexes, and interference of this interaction rescued TNF-α-induced proteasome inhibition. Transgenic mice expressing S5b/PSMD5 exhibited a reduced life span and premature onset of aging-related phenotypes, including reduced proteasome activity in their tissues. Conversely, S5b/PSMD5 deficiency in Drosophila melanogaster ameliorated the tau rough eye phenotype, enhanced proteasome activity, and extended the life span of tau flies. These results reveal the critical role of S5b/PSMD5 in negative regulation of proteasome by TNF-α/NFκB and provide insights into proteasome inhibition in human disease

    Red ginseng extract blocks histamine-dependent itch by inhibition of H1R/TRPV1 pathway in sensory neurons

    Background: Korean Red Ginseng—a steamed root of Panax ginseng Meyer—has long been used as a traditional medicine in Asian countries. Its antipruritic effect was recently found, but no molecular mechanisms were revealed. Thus, the current study focused on determining the underlying molecular mechanism of Korean Red Ginseng extract (RGE) against histamine-induced itch at the peripheral sensory neuronal level. Methods: To examine the antipruritic effect of RGE, we performed in vivo scratching behavior test in mice, as well as in vitro calcium imaging and whole-cell patch clamp experiments to elucidate underlying molecular mechanisms. Results: The results of our in vivo study confirmed that RGE indeed has an antipruritic effect on histamine-induced scratching in mice. In addition, RGE showed a significant inhibitory effect on histamine-induced responses in primary cultures of mouse dorsal root ganglia, suggesting that RGE has a direct inhibitory effect on sensory neuronal level. Results of further experiments showed that RGE inhibits histamine-induced responses on cells expressing both histamine receptor subtype 1 and TRPV1 ion channel, indicating that RGE blocks the histamine receptor type 1/TRPV1 pathway in sensory neurons, which is responsible for histamine-dependent itch sensation. Conclusion: The current study found for the first time that RGE effectively blocks histamine-induced itch in peripheral sensory neurons. We believe that the current results will provide an insight on itch transmission and will be helpful in understanding how RGE exerts its antipruritic effects

    A Guidance and Control Law Design for Precision Automatic Take-off and Landing of Fixed-Wing UAVs

    This paper presents an automatic take-off and landing control system (ATOLS) for fixed-wing UAVs. We propose a guidance and control system to satisfy the requirement for high-precision landing using arresting wires. For trajectory tracking, Line-of-Sight (LOS)-based longitudinal and lateral guidance laws are derived. For the design of inner loop controllers, linear models are identified directly from the flight data. In order to maintain the consistency of the control performance in the presence of flight regime changes during take-off and landing, the linear baseline controller is augmented with a compensator designed using L 1 adaptive control theory, which eliminates the need for conventional gain scheduling. The proposed control system is implemented on a scale Cessna UAV with an arresting hook for validation. The proposed take-off and landing system demonstrated a consistent performance in a series of test flight on a full-scale carrier model
