Challenging the Environmental History of the Cerrado: Science, Biodiversity and Politics on the Brazilian Agricultural Frontier

This article presents an overview of the environmental history of the Brazilian Cerrado, its environmental characteristics and the processes related to the historical change in the landscapes of this endangered ecosystem. It highlights competing classifications of the Cerrado, the role of politics in establishing them, and the environmental consequences of such classifications. More than just describing an environment, classifying an ecosystem is a political process that involves complex socio-environmental interactions. The sources used points out the different attempts to get to know and "conquered" the Cerrado, bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives from a variety of actors and institutions. Historiographic challenges go beyond environmental descriptions in that the socio-environmental interactions that made up this unique ecosystem are equally complex. Crossing the Green Line: Frontier, environment and the role of bandeirantes in the conquering of Brazilian territory

This article’s objective is to present, via bibliographic research, the territorial makeup of colonial Brazil (1500-1822) and the Brazilian historical approach at the beginning of the twentieth century that sought to relate questions and concepts of frontier, territoriality, and nature in the historic role of the bandeirante movement. The goal here is to address territorial and geographic questions, but also environmental ones, based on historical geography, and to present arguments that fall in the nexus between history and nature in the debate on Brazilian territorial expansion. The text is grounded in classical works, and works by renown authors on this topic, but we also include discussion of less well known sources. The intent is to identify how the theme of bandeirantes and Brazilian westward expansion can be analyzed differently in the pertinent specialized historical literature

A BARRANCA ESTIGMATIZADA E SEUS LUGARES MALDITOS: A CONSTRUÇÃO SIMBÓLICA DO ESPAÇO URBANO NA EXPANSÃO DA FRONTEIRA EM GOIÁS (1941-1953)

Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar os processos de resistência a processos de estigma social na formação urbana de duas localidades em Goiás nas décadas de 1940 e 1950. As cidades de Ceres (Colônia) e Rialma (Barranca) desenvolveram processos urbanos distintos, apesar de terem originado de uma mesma política de migração e colonização. Uma cidade planejada (Ceres) e outra de formação espontânea (Rialma), separadas por um rio e unidas por uma ponte, estabeleceram processos de estigmatização e de resistência à figuração do estigma social. A base teórico-metodológica fundamenta-se nos processos de distinção e na figuração do estigma social. Diferentes fontes históricas foram utilizadas nessa pesquisa com depoimentos, literatura, relatos memorialistas, documentação oficial. O resultado é um importante estudo de caso sobre a formação urbana em Goiás durante a expansão da fronteira

A SOCIOLOGIA JURÍDICA E O APRENDIZADO DA PERPLEXIDADE

Este trabalho baseou-se na problemática da multiplicidade de abordagens requeridas pela disciplina de Sociologia Jurídica, detectadas pelo IDES (Instituto de Direito e Sociedade) sobreas faculdades de Direito no Brasil, e trazido para a experiência letiva do autor deste texto na FADA (Faculdade de Direito de Anápolis). O texto buscou ressaltar a importância da compreensão crítica, a partir de uma visão sociológica, para o entendimento do direito, usando como fundo histórico a evolução da democracia no contexto mundial. A tentativa foi a de adotar uma reflexão sobre o conhecimento e a sua função emancipatória, partindo da relação entre o papel do Estado e da cidadania
