Exploring lived space of new build urban environment through photovoice interview: The case of Donau City in Vienna
Contemporary urban design practices and new build redevelopment projects are strongly influenced by economic, social and cultural practices, as well as by new forms of management. These different parameters play on the quality production of open spaces. Investigating the place study of Donau City, a mixed-use neighbourhood located in Vienna (Austria), we look at the relations between the new build environment and the daily users. We aim at analysing the intrinsic qualities of this specific urban environment by understanding how residents and users perceive and decode it (emic perspective) and how they make sense of everyday practiced and lived space. In order to do so, we followed a citizen science approach, using photovoice interview with thirteen residents and workers. Commenting the photographs they took on a one-day walk, the users revealed their daily life of their surrounding through design and planning elements associated with personal stories. We analyzed the corpus via inductive coding which helped us conceptualize the users’ lived space (Lefebvre, 2000), perceptions and interactions. Discussing the results, we contribute to a deeper understanding of the role forms, functions and scales play on open spaces’ quality in new build redevelopment projects by bringing in a bottom-up and sensitive approach. We show that social and spatial fragmentation could be mitigated by paying more attention to the emic perceptions and intangible values in spatial conception
This article examines the diffusion of major cultural facilities (MCF) typical of the "creative" metropolization in working class neighbourhoods. The latter have until recently been used in hosting community cultural facilities. We will be crossing different case studies taken from Marseille (Alcazar Library), Roubaix (La Piscine Museum) and Plaine Commune (La Cité du cinéma and the National Archives). We will suggest a typology of ideal-typical trajectories experienced by these territories after the development of a MCF. The article will then show though our different case studies the difficulty to categorize MCF, given their evolution and the ambivalence of many assessments. Finally, it will examine the conditions - heritage, urban, socio-economic, cultural and ultimately political - for a "bottom-up" metropolization related to MCF
Brain Abscess Caused by Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii : Case Report
Q1Q1Reporte de caso306-310This 24-year-old soldier had a history of polytrauma caused by firearm missiles of a fragmentation weapon. He was referred to the Hospital Militar Central, where multiple shrapnel wounds in the head, face, thorax, and extremities were found. A brain abscess was documented and drained, and a culture grew a multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. An appropriate antibiotic treatment was started but did not lead to a good response, and the patient died. The clinical course of the illness is presented, as is its treatment and the role of A baumannii as an etiological agent of a brain abscess. To the authors' knowledge, there have been no reported cases in the worldwide literature of brain abscess by this infectious agent
