    Pulsed Ultrasound Does Not Affect Recovery From Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

    Aim: To investigate the effects of pulsed Ultrasound (US) in recovery from Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). Methods: Twelve healthy male athletes (mean age 23.83±1.697 year) performed an eccentric exercise protocol of non-dominant elbow flexors to induce muscle soreness on 2 occasions separated by 3 weeks. Subjects in experimental group received pulsed US (1 MHz, intensity 0.8 W/cm2, mark space ratio 1:10), whereas control group received sham US after 24 h, 48 h and 72 h. Perception of muscle soreness, active ROM and muscle strength were the parameters measured at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h and 72 h with the help of VAS, manual goniometer and JONEX muscles master instrument respectively. Results: Post hoc t test analysis revealed significant differences (p <0.05) between 0 h and 72 h in the parameter of ROM (t = 6.18) and muscle power (t = 2.54) as well as between 24 h and 48 h in the parameter of muscle soreness (t = 3.13) in control group. Similar differences were also observed in the experimental group. No significant inter-group differences at α level of 0.05 was observed in any parameter at any level. Conclusion: The pattern of recovery from DOMS was not influenced by the application of pulsed Ultrasound at the parameters discussed here

    Strong electron correlation effects in the photophysics of quasi-one-dimensional π\pi-conjugated organic systems such as polyenes, polyacetylenes, polydiacetylenes, etc., have been extensively studied. Far less is known on correlation effects in two-dimensional π\pi-conjugated systems. Here we present theoretical and experimental evidence for moderate repulsive electron-electron interactions in a number of finite polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules with D6hD_{6h} symmetry. We show that the excited state orderings in these molecules are reversed relative to that expected within one-electron and mean-field theories. Our results reflect similarities as well as differences in the role and magnitude of electron correlation effects in these two-dimensional molecules compared to those in polyenes.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 2 table

    Effects of package and storage conditions on the keeping quality of Perlette grapes

    Einfluß der Verpackungs- und Lagerungsbedingungen auf die Haltbarkeit von Perlette-TraubenUm die Verluste zwischen Ernte und Verkauf von Perlette-Trauben zu verringern, wurde jeweils 1/4 eines SO2-Spenders („Dual Release" SO2 generator) in die 2 kg Trauben fassenden Polyäthylenbeutel gelegt; die Verpackungsbeutel waren mit Perforationen versehen, die 0,56; 0,84; 1,12; 1,40 und 1,68 % der Folienfläche ausmachten. Die gefüllten Beutel wurden bei 5, 15, 25, 30 und 35 °C (Freilandtemperatur) in belüftete 2-kg-Kartons aus Wellpappe verpackt und 60 d lang kühl gelagert (0-3 °C). Bei der Verkostung wurden die Trauben mit einer Verpackungstemperatur von 35 °C und 1,12%iger Perforation der Verpackungsqeutel am besten beurteilt. Die niedrigste Verpackungstemperatur (5 °C) und der niedrigste Perforationsgrad (0,56 %) verringerten beide den physiologischen Gewichtsverlust (PLW) und das Abfallen der Beeren am stärksten. PLW nahm mit der Dauer der Lagerung zu. Bis zu einer Lagerungsdauer von 40 d in zu 0,56 %, 0,85 % und 1,12 % perforierten Beuteln trat keine Beerenfäulnis auf; diese war jedoch auch bei erhöhter Perforation noch zu vernachlässigen. Die höchsten Mostgewichte wurden bei Verpakkungstemperaturen von 30 oder 35 °C nach 40tägiger Lagerung festgestellt; danach nahm das Mostgewicht ab. Die höchsten Säurewerte wurden bei Verpackungstemperaturen von 25 und 35 °C nach einer Lagerungsdauer von 40 d, bei 15 und 30 °C nach 60 d ermittelt. Demzufolge können PerletteTrauben durch beigepackte SO2-Spender in Folienbeuteln, die zu 1,12 % perforiert sind und Verpacken bei 35 °C bis zu 40 d erfolgreich gelagert werden

    Room temperature magnetic imaging of magnetic storage media and garnet epilayers in the presence of external magnetic fields using a sub-micron GaAs SHPM

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.A multipurpose room temperature scanning Hall probe microscope (RT-SHPM) system incorporating an ultra-high sensitive sub-micron GaAs Hall probe (active area of similar to0.8 x 0.8 mum(2) room temperature Hall coefficient of 0.3 Ohm /G) exhibiting extremely high magnetic field sensitivity (0.04G/root Hz) was used for the direct, non-invasive and quantitative imaging of magnetic field fluctuations in very close proximity to the surfaces of thin film magnetic storage media, Bi substituted iron garnet epilayers and demagnetized Sr-ferrite permanent magnets placed in external magnetic fields. A scanning tunnelling microscope tip integrated adjacent to the Hall probe was used for precise vertical positioning of the probe. RT-SHPM images of 1.4 MB written floppy disks clearly showed well-defined magnetic transitions to coalesce into small island-like structures under external perpendicular fields greater than 1300 Oe. The RT-SHPM is demonstrated to be a versatile means of quantitatively monitoring micron-sized magnetic domain structures in the presence of external magnetic fields at: room temperature.
