    Longitudinal strain of right ventricular free wall by 2-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography is useful for detecting pulmonary hypertension

    Aims Echocardiography is widely used for screening pulmonary hypertension (PH). More recently developed two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) can assess regional deformation of the myocardium and is useful for detecting left ventricular dysfunction. However, its usefulness to assess right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is not clear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the ability of peak systolic strain (PSS) and post-systolic strain index (PSI) at the RV free wall determined by 2D-STE to detect PH. Main methods Thirty-six images (27 images from PH patients, nine from patients with connective tissue disease without PH) obtained by 2D-STE were analysed. We investigated the relationship between RV hemodynamics measured by right heart catheterization and PSS, PSI and other echocardiographic parameters reflecting RV overload including RV end-diastolic diameter (RVDd) and tricuspid valve regurgitant pressure gradient (TRPG). Key findings PSS, PSI, RVDd and TRPG were all correlated with mean pulmonary arterial pressure (MPAP) and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). Furthermore, when PSS and MPAP were measured twice, the change in PSS was correlated with the change in MPAP (r = 0.633, p = 0.037). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified PSS as the only independent factor associated with MPAP ? 35 mm Hg [odds ratio (OR), 1.616; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.017-2.567; p = 0.042] and PVR ? 400 dyn・s・cm- 5(OR, 1.804; 95% CI 1.131-2.877; p = 0.013). Furthermore, the optimal PSS cut-off value to detect an elevated MPAP and PVR was - 20.75%, based on receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Significance PSS of the RV free wall might serve as a useful non-invasive indicator of PH

    Parenting Stress and Social Style in Mothers and Fathers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Cross-Cultural Investigation in Italy and Japan

    Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face unique challenges, which may affect parenting functioning. However, little is known about gender and cultural variations in parenting stress and styles in these families. The aims of this study were to investigate: (1a) the differences in parenting stress and (1b) social style between Italian and Japanese mothers and fathers of children with ASD; (2) the predictive role of culture, sociodemographic, and child’s characteristics on parenting stress; (3) the predictors of the social parenting style, including parenting stress dimensions. The study involved 92 Italians and 89 Japanese parents of school-age children (5–12 years) with ASD who completed the Parenting Stress Index and the Parenting Style Questionnaire. Results revealed that Japanese parents showed higher parenting stress and less engagement in social style than Italians. Across cultures, mothers used more social style than fathers. Being Japanese and having a child with greater ASD severity predicted higher levels of parenting stress. We also found that country, parent’s gender, and stress related to the dysfunctional interaction were significant predictors of parenting social style. Our findings highlight the importance of a cross-cultural approach to better understand the experiences and needs of mothers and fathers of children with ASD

    Allelopathic Substances of <i>Osmanthus</i> spp. for Developing Sustainable Agriculture

    Osmanthus fragrans Lour. has been cultivated for more than 2500 years because of the fragrance and color of the flowers. The flowers and roots have been used in tea, liquors, foods, and traditional Chinese medicine. The species contains more than 180 compounds including terpenoids, phenylpropanoids, polyphenols, flavonoids, and sterols. However, there has been limited information available on the allelopathic properties and allelopathic substances of O. fragrans. We investigated the allelopathy and allelopathic substances of O. fragrans and Osmanthus heterophyllus (G.Don) P.S. Green, as well as Osmanthus × fortunei Carrière, which is the hybrid species between O. fragrans and O. heterophyllus. The leaf extracts of O. fragrans, O. heterophyllus, and O. × fortunei suppressed the growth of cress (Lepidium sativum L.), alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), Lolium multiflorum Lam., and Vulpia myuros (L.) C.C.Gmel with the extract concentration dependently. The extract of the hybrid species O. × fortune was the most active among the extracts. The main allelopathic substances of O. × fortunei and O. fragrans were isolated and identified as (+)-pinoresinol and 10-acetoxyligustroside, respectively. (+)-Pinoresinol was also found in the fallen leaves of O. × fortunei. Both compounds showed an allelopathic activity on the growth of cress and L. multiflorum. On the other hand, several allelopathic substances including (+)-pinoresinol may be involved in the allelopathy of O. heterophyllus. O. fragrans, O. heterophyllus, and O. × fortunei are evergreen trees. but their senescent leaves fall and cover the soil under the trees. It is possible that those allelopathic substances are liberated through the decomposition process of the leaves into their rhizosphere soil, and that they accumulate in the soil and provide a competitive advantage to the species through the inhibition of the growth of the neighboring competing plants. Therefore, the leaves of these Osmanthus species are allelopathic and potentially useful for weed management options in some agriculture settings to reduce commercial herbicide dependency for the developing sustainable agriculture systems

    Association between oral, social, and physical frailty in community -dwelling older adults

    Objectives: Oral frailty (OF) has been shown to be a predictor of disability. Therefore, it is important to be able to identify factors associated with OF in order to prevent long-term dependence. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationships between OF, social frailty (SF), and physical frailty (PF) in community-dwelling older adults, with the overarching aim of informing the future development of effective measures to prevent frailty. Methods: Oral, physical, and social function, nutritional and psychological status, and medical history were examined in 682 community-dwelling individuals (267 men, 415 women) aged ≥ 65 years. Ordinal logistic regression analysis with SF and PF as independent variables was performed with pass analysis to determine the relationship between the different types of frailty. Results: Logistic regression analysis revealed significant associations between OF and decline in social function, physical function, and nutritional status, and an increase in the number of medications used. Path analysis showed that SF was directly related to OF and that OF and SF were directly related to PF. Conclusions: These findings suggest that a decline in social function may directly influence a decline in oral and physical function. The results of this study provide initial evidence, that may guide the future development of measures that aim to prevent and manage OF

    Caregivers' mental distress and child health during the COVID-19 outbreak in Japan.

    To clarify the physical and mental conditions of children during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and consequent social distancing in relation to the mental condition of their caregivers. This internet-based nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted between April 30 and May 13, 2020. The participants were 1,200 caregivers of children aged 3-14 years. Child health issues were categorized into "at least one" or "none" according to caregivers' perception. Caregivers' mental status was assessed using the Japanese version of the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale-6. The association between caregivers' mental status and child health issues was analyzed using logistic regression models. Among the participants, 289 (24.1%) had moderate and 352 (29.3%) had severe mental distress and 69.8% of children in their care had health issues. The number of caregivers with mental distress was more than double that reported during the 2016 national survey. After adjusting for covariates, child health issues increased among caregivers with moderate mental distress (odds ratio 2.24, 95% confidence interval 1.59-3.16) and severe mental distress (odds ratio 3.05, 95% confidence interval 2.17-4.29) compared with caregivers with no mental distress. The results highlight parents' psychological stress during the pandemic, suggesting the need for adequate parenting support. However, our study did not consider risk factors of caregivers' mental distress such as socioeconomic background. There is an urgent need for further research to identify vulnerable populations and children's needs to develop sustainable social support programs for those affected by the outbreak

    Effect of birth season on allergic rhinitis and cedar pollinosis considering allergen and vitamin D exposure: The Japan Environment and Children's study (JECS)

    Background: The relationship between the season of birth, allergen sensitization, and allergic rhinitis have been inconsistent, and there are no studies that simultaneously consider vitamin D and allergen exposure. This study aimed to determine the associations between the season of birth, house dust mite (HDM) and Japanese cedar pollen (JCP) sensitization, and allergic rhinitis and pollinosis, while taking vitamin D levels and allergen exposure into account. Methods: This study included 4323 participants in the Sub-Cohort Study of the Japan Environment and Children's Study. A logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between the season of birth and sensitization to JCP or HDM (judged by specific immunoglobulin E) at age 2 and allergic rhinitis or pollinosis at age 3, adjusted for HDM or JCP exposure and vitamin D levels with potential confounders. Results: Participants born in spring or summer were more likely to have pollinosis than were those born in winter (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.08, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13–3.82 for spring; aOR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.03–3.47 for summer). Participants born in summer were more likely to have HDM sensitization than were those born in winter (Der p 1, aOR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.10–2.15; Der f 1, aOR: 1.44, 95% CI: 1.03–2.01). Exposure to JCP and HDM were associated with pollinosis and HDM sensitization, respectively. Conclusions: Spring and summer births were associated with the development of pollinosis, and summer birth was associated with HDM sensitization, even when vitamin D and allergen exposure were considered. Further studies on mechanisms other than vitamin D and allergen exposure are required

    Somatosensory Evoked Field in Response to Visuotactile Stimulation in 3- to 4-Year-Old Children

    A child-customized magnetoencephalography system was used to investigate somatosensory evoked field (SEF) in 3- to 4-year-old children. Three stimulus conditions were used in which the children received tactile-only stimulation to their left index finger or visuotactile stimulation. In the two visuotactile conditions, the children received tactile stimulation to their finger while they watched a video of tactile stimulation applied either to someone else’s finger (the finger-touch condition) or to someone else’s toe (the toe-touch condition). The latencies and source strengths of equivalent current dipoles (ECDs) over contralateral (right) somatosensory cortex were analyzed. In the preschoolers who provided valid ECDs, the stimulus conditions induced an early-latency ECD occurring between 60 and 68 ms mainly with an anterior direction. We further identified a middle-latency ECD between 97 and 104 ms, which predominantly had a posterior direction. Finally, initial evidence was found for a late-latency ECD at about 139–151 ms again more often with an anterior direction. Differences were found in the source strengths of the middle-latency ECDs among the stimulus conditions. For the paired comparisons that could be formed, ECD source strength was more pronounced in the finger-touch condition than in the tactile-only and the toe-touch conditions. Although more research is necessary to expand the data set, this suggests that visual information modulated preschool SEF. The finding that ECD source strength was higher when seen and felt touch occurred to the same body part, as compared to a different body part, might further indicate that connectivity between visual and tactile information is indexed in preschool somatosensory cortical activity, already in a somatotopic way

    Obesity as a potential risk factor for stillbirth: The Japan Environment and Children’s Study

    The relationship between high body mass index (BMI) >25 kg/m2 and risk for stillbirth in the Japanese population remains unclear. This study aimed to estimate the impact of maternal obesity on the risk of stillbirth in a Japanese population. This prospective cohort study used data from the Japan Environment and Children’s Study, which recruited pregnant individuals between 2011 and 2014. A total of 93,772 fetuses were considered eligible for inclusion in this study. Stillbirth (fetal death before or during labor at ≥22 completed weeks of gestation) rates were compared among four pre-pregnancy BMI groups: underweight (<18.5 kg/m2), reference (18.5 to <25.0 kg/m2), overweight (25.0 to <30.0 kg/m2), and obese (≥30.0 kg/m2). The association between pre-pregnancy BMI and the risk of stillbirth was estimated using multiple logistic regression analyses. The overall stillbirth incidence was 0.33% (305/93,722). Compared with the reference group, the risk of stillbirth was significantly higher in the overweight group (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.55; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08–2.23) and the obese group (aOR: 2.60; 95% CI: 1.59–4.24). The overall incidence of early stillbirth (i.e., <28 weeks) was 0.17% (155/93,722). Similarly, after adjusting for potential confounding factors, the risk of early stillbirth was significantly higher in the obese group (aOR: 4.33; 95% CI: 2.44–7.70). Increased maternal BMI was associated with an increased risk of stillbirth in the Japanese population. Therefore, counselling women planning for pregnancy on the importance of an appropriate pre-pregnancy BMI to minimize the risk of stillbirth is important
