Te Perdono: Constructs that Influence Forgiveness of Infidelity in Latinx Romantic Relationships

    Get PDF
The aim of the present study was to investigate the link between attachment style and acculturation on forgiveness after a sexual and/or emotional infidelity in Latinx Romantic Relationship using measures of attachment (attachment style (i.e. secure, preoccupied, fearful, and dismissing)), acculturation (level of acculturation (i.e. machismo and familism)), and depositional forgiveness (i.e. revenge, avoidant, and benevolence). One hundred and thirteen Latinx participated in this study and completed an internet-based questionnaire. This study found that secure attachment and familism was a positive predictor of forgiveness. The study also found that fearful attachment and sexual infidelity was a positive predictor of revenge while machismo was a negative predictor of revenge in this sample. The study also found that dismissing attachment and sexual infidelity was a positive predictor of avoidance, while familism was a negative predictor of avoidance. Lastly, the study found that both secure attachment and machismo were positive predictors of benevolence in forgiveness. These findings suggest that secure attachment and familism are strong predictors of forgiveness in Latinx individuals

Posmorriña in Ángel Rama’s Tierra sin mapa

The article appears in a Special Issue of the journal: Galician Mobilities: Revisiting Migration and “morriña”, edited by María Alonso Alonso, Catherine Barbour and Gustavo San Román.The Uruguayan Ángel Rama (1926-1983) is widely recognized as a pioneer in the development of cultural studies in Latin America. This article proposes that there was a lesser-known side to the socially conscious, historicist Rama that was expressed mostly in intimate writings: a romantic, essentialist Rama. The focus is a semi-fictional work, Tierra sin mapa (1959), which recounts the stories Rama’s inmigrant mother told him in Montevideo about her childhood in rural Galicia. In retelling her reminiscences, which were triggered by the homesickness that in Galician is termed morriña, Rama relives his mother’s experiences as his own. This process is here called posmorriña, in an echo of the term ‘postmemory’, coined by Marianne Hirsch to denote the experience of children of victims of trauma. The article argues that this maternal Galicia left a mark on the young intellectual that played a key role in his understanding of Latin American cultural identity. It further suggests that Rama’s experience may be paradigmatic of those of other writers in his time and place.PostprintPeer reviewe

Setting Sail to Cuba: Analyzing the Recent Introduction of Cruise Lines and the Impact on American Tourist Freedoms

After President Obama’s announcement in early 2015 of increased relations with the Cuban government despite the existing Cuban embargo under the Helms–Burton Act and the Cuban Democracy Act, Carnival Cruise line made history in July of 2015 when it became the first United States cruise line to receive approval from both the United States Department of Treasury and the United States Department of Commerce to offer cruises to Cuba. Since its introduction, there has been wide increase in Cuba’s tourism industry. However, Cuban regulations still regulate where and how cruise lines can travel. The increased relations are still in their infancy, leaving uncertainty regarding United States travel to the island and how much liability is imposed on businesses should their passengers violate Cuban laws. As it stands, U.S. passengers and businesses do not fully understand the legal ramifications of possible violations with Cuban law. For this reason, American cruise lines should take preemptive measures such as providing clear instructions prior and during embarkation to better equip Americans citizens abroad

Photometric Properties of the M33 Star Cluster System

We present a catalog of 2,990 extended sources in a 1deg x1deg area centered on M33 using the MegaCam camera on the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii telescope (CFHT). The catalog includes 599 new candidate stellar clusters, 204 previously confirmed clusters, 1,969 likely background galaxies and 218 unknown extended objects. We present ugriz integrated magnitudes of the candidates and confirmed star clusters as well as full width at half maximum, ellipticity and stellarity. Based on the properties of the confirmed star clusters, we select a sub-sample of highly probable clusters composed of 246 objects. The integrated photometry of the complete cluster catalog reveals a wide range of colors from -0.4 < (g-r) < 1.5 and -1.0 < (r-i) < 1.0 with no obvious cluster subpopulations. Comparisons with models of simple stellar populations suggest a large range of ages some as old as ~ 10 Gyrs. In addition, we find a sequence in the color-color diagrams that deviates from the expected direction of evolution. This feature could be associated with very young clusters (< 10^7 yrs) possessing significant nebular emission. Analysis of the radial density distribution suggests that the cluster system of M33 has suffered from significant depletion possibly due to interactions with M31. We also detect a gap in the cluster distribution in the color-color diagram at (g-r) ~ 0.3 and (u-g) ~ 0.8. This gap could be interpreted as an evolutionary effect. This complete catalog provides promising targets for deep photometry and high resolution spectroscopy to study the structure and star formation history of M33.Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa
