Frequency dynamics of gain-switched injection-locked semiconductor lasers

    Get PDF
The frequency dynamics of gain-switched singlemode semiconductor lasers subject to optical injection is investigated. The requirements for low time jitter and reduced frequency chirp operation are studied as a function of the frequency mismatch between the master and slave lasers. Suppression of the power overshoot, typical during gain-switched operation, can be achieved for selected frequency detunings

Spectrum of transmitted light in optical bistability: Effects of phase fluctuations of the driving laser

    No full text
Time-dependent correlation functions and the spectrum of the transmitted light are calculated for absorptive optical bistability taking into account phase fluctuations of the driving laser. These fluctuations are modeled by an extended phase-diffusion model which introduces non-Markovian effects. The spectrum is obtained as a superposition of Lorentzians. It shows qualitative differences with respect to the usual calculation in which phase fluctuations of the driving laser are neglected

Passage times for the decay of an unstable state triggered by colored noise

We study the decay of an unstable state in the presence of colored noise by calculating the moment generating function of the passage-time distribution. The problems of the independence of the initial condition in this non-Markovian process and that of nonlinear effects are addressed. Our results are compared with recent analog simulations

Intensity correlation function of dye lasers: Short-time behavior

We propose an equation to calculate the intensity correlation function of a dye-laser model with a pump parameter subject to finite-bandwidth fluctuations. The equation is valid, in the weak-noise limit, for all times. It incorporates novel non-Markovian features. Results are given for the short-time behavior of the correlation function. It exhibits a characteristic initial plateau. Our findings are supported by a numerical simulation of the model

Transient dynamics of spatial fluctuations of the director field in the pure twist Fréedericksz transition is studied. A nonlinear calculation is presented. Anomalous transient fluctuations are shown. Different stages of evolution and the domain of validity of linear theories are discussed

Dynamics of transient pattern formation in nematic liquid crystals

We analyze the dynamics of a transient pattern formation in the Fréedericksz transition corresponding to a twist geometry. We present a calculation of the time-dependent structure factor based on a dynamical model which incorporates consistently the coupling of the director field with the velocity flow and also the effect of fluctuations. The appearance and development of a characteristic periodicity is described in terms of the time dependence of the maximum of the structure factor. We find a well-defined time for the appearance of the pattern and a subsequent stage of pattern development in which the characteristic periodicity tends to an asymptotic value

Dynamics of Fréedericksz transition in a fluctuating magnetic field

Fréedericksz transition under twist deformation in a nematic layer is discussed when the magnetic field has a random component. A dynamical model which includes the thermal fluctuations of the system is presented. The randomness of the field produces a shift of the instability point. Beyond this instability point the time constant characteristic of the approach to the stationary stable state decreases because of the field fluctuations. The opposite happens for fields smaller than the critical one. The decay time of an unstable state, calculated as a mean first-passage time, is also decreased by the field fluctuations

Transient patterns in nematic liquid crystals: Domain-wall dynamics

    No full text
We study the dynamics of the late stages of the Fréedericksz transition in which a periodic transient pattern decays to a final homogeneous state. A stability analysis of an unstable stationary pattern is presented, and equations for the evolution of the domain walls are obtained. Using results of previous theories, we analyze the effect that the specific dynamics of the problem, incorporating hydrodynamic couplings, has on the expected logarithmic domain growth law
