Intestinal electrolyte distribution and Ca45 and Sr89 insorption in calves

The translocation of substances from the lumen of the intestine into the blood or into extracellular space (absorption) is a complex phenomenon. Any process such as active transport, carrier-facilitated diffusion, diffusion across lipid layers or through pores, vesiculation or pinocytosis can be assumed to be involved in this translocation. The involvement of one or more processes in the absorption of a particular constituent often produces experimental results that are difficult to interpret. All of the factors involved in absorption will not be resolved until the structure of biological membranes is better understood. Knowledge of membrance structure is essential before the biologist can relate, with validity and reliability, structure to function, that is, intestinal epithelial cells to their function of absorption. Structural-functional relationships of membrances precedes an understanding of the organism\u27s ability to exert physiologic control over a particular function. Obviously, the main function of the cell membrance is to maintain an organized intracellular environment consistent with its genetic direction. Studies concerned with the transfer of metabolites across cell membranes are of secondary importance only to the biosynthesis of the membranes themselves. One of the most prominent environmental situations presented to the intestinal epithelial cell is the ionic composition in the ingesta. Since the ingesta does not possess the ionic constancy of body fluids, variability in absorption of a particular metabolite is not only often encountered but probably should be expected. The effects of ionic environment have been investigated particularly in connection with the absorption of sugars. Basically, this study represents a modest attempt to define the effects of some physical conditions in the intestinal lumen and their effects on the passage of certain cations in vivo. The objectives of this study were: (1) to determine the concentration of some inorganic constituents in the gastrointestinal tract of calves, (2) to compare the insorption of calcium, strontium, sodium, and potassium from jejunal and ileal segments of calves, (3) to determine the effects of ionic calcium and strontium alternation on subsequent insorption of these cations to the blood, (4) to determine the effects of hypertonic conditions in the lumen on the insorption of some major cations, and (5) to determine the effects of iodoacetate on the relative passage of calcium and strontium

Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) may exist before or occur early in the course of pulmonary embolism (PE). We determined the PE outcomes based on the presence and timing of AF. Methods and Results Using the data from a multicenter PE registry, we identified 3 groups: (1) those with preexisting AF, (2) patients with new AF within 2 days from acute PE (incident AF), and (3) patients without AF. We assessed the 90-day and 1-year risk of mortality and stroke in patients with AF, compared with those without AF (reference group). Among 16 497 patients with PE, 792 had preexisting AF. These patients had increased odds of 90-day all-cause (odds ratio [OR], 2.81; 95% CI, 2.33-3.38) and PE-related mortality (OR, 2.38; 95% CI, 1.37-4.14) and increased 1-year hazard for ischemic stroke (hazard ratio, 5.48; 95% CI, 3.10-9.69) compared with those without AF. After multivariable adjustment, preexisting AF was associated with significantly increased odds of all-cause mortality (OR, 1.91; 95% CI, 1.57-2.32) but not PE-related mortality (OR, 1.50; 95% CI, 0.85-2.66). Among 16 497 patients with PE, 445 developed new incident AF within 2 days of acute PE. Incident AF was associated with increased odds of 90-day all-cause (OR, 2.28; 95% CI, 1.75-2.97) and PE-related (OR, 3.64; 95% CI, 2.01-6.59) mortality but not stroke. Findings were similar in multivariable analyses. Conclusions In patients with acute symptomatic PE, both preexisting AF and incident AF predict adverse clinical outcomes. The type of adverse outcomes may differ depending on the timing of AF onset.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Association between Food Security Status and the Home Food Environment among a Sample of Rural South Carolina Residents

    No full text
Prior research suggests that food security status may have an effect on the home food environment. Further, the literature suggests that food access factors may function to influence said relationship. The purpose of this research is to fill a gap in the literature on this relationship, as well as to identify potential food access effect modifiers. This research employs linear mixed effects modeling with a random intercept variable (zip codes). Eleven food access variables are included in regression analyses and are tested as potential effect modifiers in the association between food security status and the home food environment. Food security status is significantly associated with the home food environment (95% CI = 0.1–1.38) in the unadjusted model. In the adjusted model, food pantry usage is found to be a significant effect modifier on the association between food security status and the home food environment. This research concludes that food security status has a significant but disparate effect on the home food environment depending on participant food pantry usage. Practical implications from this research would be for relevant stakeholders to potentially improve rural food pantry access in order to increase the home food environment among rural and food insecure populations

The Association between Food Insecurity and Making Hunger-Coping Trade-Offs during the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Role of Sources of Food and Easiness in Food Access

Many individuals make financial, health and food related trade-offs to cope with the challenges of food insecurity and to meet their household needs for healthy, affordable food. A survey (n = 652) was conducted in nine rural counties in South Carolina, USA, during the COVID-19 pandemic from August 2020 to July 2021. We examine if level of food insecurity predicts hunger-coping trade-offs, and whether this relationship is moderated by easiness in food access and dependence on different food source types. Nearly one-third of the respondents experienced food insecurity. Making trade-offs between paying for food and other household expenses was common among the rural residents as on average they made nearly one type of trade-off in the past three months. The number of trade-offs was the highest among highly food insecure respondents (mean = 2.64), followed by moderately food insecure respondents (mean = 1.66); low food insecure respondents had the lowest number of trade-offs (mean = 0.39). The moderating effects of easiness in food access and dependence on food sources varied by level of food insecurity. The results show that individuals at different levels of food insecurity use different strategies to fulfill their food needs and social programs are more often utilized than personal food sources. We conclude with implications for addressing food insecurity in order to reduce the possibility of making trade-offs

Flexural deformities are usually found in foal at birth or develop in the first two years of life but may be acquired at any age. They can be uni and bilateral, and generally are produced as flexural deformity of the distal interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joints. The related causes are nutritional, pain, trauma and the predisposition for fast growth. An eight-yearold gelded horse, with no defined breed, weighing 260 kg, used for animal traction presented a flexural deformity of the distal interphalangeal joint of the left thoracic member of stage II contractural deformities, having as possible causes trauma and pain. The tenotomy of the deep digital flexor tendon was stipulated as treatment. The postoperative consisted of the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory, corrective shoeing and daily sessions of physiotherapy. The present work shows with success the use of the tenotomy of the deep digital flexor tendon for correction of the acquired flexural deformation in the unilateral distal interphalangeal joint in an adult equine. With the stipulated treatment the animal returned to its normal configuration of the member and after six months it did not have any sign of recurrence, what guaranteed a significant improvement in its quality of life
