    Expansion of the geographical distribution of Trachycephalus typhonius (Linnaeus, 1758) (Anura: Hylidae): first record for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

    We report the first record of Trachycephalus typhonius for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, based on individuals found in the municipalities of Roque Gonzales and Salvador das MissĂ”es. The original vegetation of these municipalities is characterized as Mesophytic Semideciduous Forest (Atlantic Domain), currently replaced by agricultural activities and urbanization. This record expands the geographical distribution area of this species by approximately 270 km from the nearest known locality, IguazĂș, Misiones province, Argentina

    Enhanced Phylogenetic Diversity of Anuran Communities: A Result of Species Loss in an Agricultural Environment

    The great environmental changes induced by anthropogenic activities reshaped many ecosystem processes. Thus, the previously natural landscapes have been turned into mosaics of natural and seminatural lands embedded into human-modified landscape. To understand effects of these landscape modifications on the anuran communities, we aimed to compare pond-breeding anuran communities in a well-preserved forest with communities in agricultural landscape. We tested the values of taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversity, by analyzing four data matrixes containing environmental, phylogenetic, morphological and abundance information from 15 anuran species along this environmental gradient. Our analysis showed that only the phylogenetic component of the diversity was linked to the changes on the gradient and that the loss of environmental quality generates enhanced phylogenetic diversity. We showed that the anthropogenic disturbance acts negatively on anuran communities, forcing the species to adapt and behave like generalist species in order to survive at the modified places now available, where there were well-preserved forests before the humans changed it

    New records of Crossodactylus schmidti Gallardo, 1961 (Anura: Hylodidae) for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with data on morphometry and an updated geographic distribution map

    Crossodactylus schmidti Gallardo, 1961 is a diurnal frog inhabiting rocky streams in forested areas, recently considered as a threatened species in the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. Herein we present four new population records of C. schmidti for the northwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul state and discuss the major impacts that may be threatening the species in the state. Additionally, we present an updated map of the current known species distribution and compare morphometric data among populations from Rio Grande do Sul state and ParanĂĄ state, in Brazil, and from the province of Misiones, Argentina, based on the examination of voucher specimens available from herpetological collections

    Re-description of the external morphology of Phyllomedusa iheringii Boulenger, 1885 larvae (Anura: Hylidae), with comments on the external morphology of tadpoles of the P. burmeisteri group

    Phyllomedusa iheringii is a leaf frog endemic to the Uruguayan Savanna, which reproduces in water bodies in open areas. Here, based on the lack of some informative characteristics observed on the first description of this species, we re-describe the larval external morphology of P. iheringii from localities in Brazil and Uruguay, and compared them with other species from the P. burmeisteri group. The tadpoles of P. iheringii belong to the suspension-rasper guild. The body length corresponds to approximately one-third of the total length. The body is pyriform in dorsal view and laterally triangular. The snout is rounded in a dorsolateral view. The spiracle is single and almost ventral, not forming a free tube, and sinistral. The opening of vent tube is dextral. The oral disc is anteroventral and anteriorly directed, with single ventral emargination. Marginal papillae uniseriate, interrupted in a wide dorsal gap, and with pointed tips. The labial tooth row formula is 2(2)/3(1). The third lower row is four times shorter than the others. Furthermore, the tadpoles of P. iheringii showed morphological differences in relation to other species of the P. burmeisteri group, this species seems to be smaller in average and have fewer marginal papillae in the oral discs

    http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7925.2009v22n2p55A mirmecofauna de Santa Catarina vem sendo inventariada hĂĄ mais de 60 anos; no entanto, pesquisas com formigas associadas a ambientes urbanos sĂł começaram a ser realizadas na Ășltima dĂ©cada no Estado. Devido Ă  carĂȘncia de pesquisas nesta ĂĄrea, o presente trabalho objetivou conhecer a mirmecofauna urbana de XanxerĂȘ, oeste de Santa Catarina. As coletas foram realizadas no perĂ­odo de janeiro a dezembro de 2006, utilizando-se de iscas Ă  base de sardinha e coletas manuais. A partir do nĂșmero de registros das espĂ©cies realizou-se a caracterização da fauna atravĂ©s dos Ă­ndices de diversidade (Shannon & Wiener – H’) e de riqueza (Jackknife 1 e Bootstrap). Foram identificadas 67 espĂ©cies, distribuĂ­das em 21 gĂȘneros, 13 tribos e seis subfamĂ­lias: Myrmicinae (33), Formicinae (17), Dolichoderinae (10), Ponerinae (4), Pseudomyrmecinae (2) e Ectatomminae (1). O Ă­ndice de diversidade encontrado foi de 3,17. Os Ă­ndices de riqueza encontrados em residĂȘncias, estabelecimentos comerciais e mĂ©todos de captura mostram que a riqueza de espĂ©cies observada foi satisfatĂłria, devido Ă  aproximação da estabilidade apresentada nas curvas de estimativa de riqueza. Constatou-se a presença de espĂ©cies tĂ­picas de ambientes perturbados e de espĂ©cies que causam incĂŽmodo quando associadas ao homem, bem como a presença de especialistas de habitat e associadas Ă  vegetação
