Structure of a type IV pilus machinery in the open and closed state.

Available from eLife Sciences Publications via the DOI in this record.Proteins of the secretin family form large macromolecular complexes, which assemble in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. Secretins are major components of type II and III secretion systems and are linked to extrusion of type IV pili (T4P) and to DNA uptake. By electron cryo-tomography of whole Thermus thermophilus cells, we determined the in situ structure of a T4P molecular machine in the open and the closed state. Comparison reveals a major conformational change whereby the N-terminal domains of the central secretin PilQ shift by ~30 Å, and two periplasmic gates open to make way for pilus extrusion. Education and careers of European analytical chemists
What roles do analytical chemists play in the European labour force? Which chemical subdisciplines offer the most job opportunities? Does higher education in chemistry in Europe provide appropriate specialization for graduates? Reliable answers to these and other questions have been derived from the first European employment survey of chemists and chemical engineers, which was conducted in 2013. The American Chemical Society (ACS) regularly publishes an employment survey in Chemical & Engineering News. Data are collected from ACS members working in the USA. The survey results clearly show in which subdiscipline graduates received their highest qualification and in which subdiscipline they are working after starting their professional career. The PDS vs. Markarian starburst galaxies: comparing strong and weak IRAS emitter at 12m and 25m in the nearby universe
(Abridged) The characteristics of the starburst galaxies from the Pico dos
Dias survey (PDS) are compared with those of the nearby UV-bright Markarian
starburst galaxies, having the same limit in redshift ( km
s) and absolute magnitude (). An important difference is
found: the Markarian galaxies are generally undetected at 12m and 25m
in \textit{IRAS}. This is consistent with the UV excess shown by these galaxies
and suggests that the youngest star forming regions dominating these galaxies
are relatively free of dust.
The FIR selection criteria for the PDS is shown to introduce a strong bias
towards massive (luminous) and large size late-type spiral galaxies. This is
contrary to the Markarian galaxies, which are found to be remarkably rich in
smaller size early-type galaxies. These results suggest that only late-type
spirals with a large and massive disk are strong emitter at 12m and
25m in \textit{IRAS} in the nearby universe.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Deep multiband surface photometry on star forming galaxies: II. A volume limited sample of 21 emission lines galaxies
We present deep surface photometry of a volume--limited sample of 21 UM
emission line galaxies in broadband optical UBVRI and near infra-red (NIR) HKs
filters. The sample comprises 19 blue compact galaxies (BCGs) and two spirals.
For some targets the exposure times are the deepest to date. For the BCG UM462
we observe a previously undetected second disk component beyond a surface
brightness level of mu_B=26 mag arcsec^{-2}. This is a true low surface
brightness component with central surface brightness mu_0=24.1 mag arcsec^{-2}
and scale length h_r=1.5 kpc. All BCGs are dwarfs, with M_B>=-18, and very
compact, with an average scale length of h_r~1 kpc. We separate the burst and
host populations for each galaxy and compare them to stellar evolutionary
models with and without nebular emission contribution. We also measure the
A_{180} asymmetry in all filters and detect a shift from optical to NIR in the
average asymmetry of the sample. This shift seems to be correlated with the
morphological class of the BCGs. Using the color-asymmetry relation, we
identify five BCGs in the sample as mergers, which is confirmed by their
morphological class. Though clearly separated from normal galaxies in the
concentration-asymmetry parameter space, we find that it is not possible to
distinguish luminous starbursting BCGs from the merely star forming low

Radio Continuum Emission at 1.4 GHz from KISS Emission-Line Galaxies
We have searched the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters
(FIRST) and the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) 1.4 GHz radio surveys for sources
that are coincident with emission-line galaxy (ELG) candidates from the KPNO
International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS). A total of 207 of the 2157 KISS ELGs
(~10%) in the first two H-alpha-selected survey lists were found to possess
radio detections in FIRST and/or NVSS. Follow-up spectra exist for all of the
radio detections, allowing us to determine the activity type (star-forming vs.
AGN) for the entire sample. We explore the properties of the radio-detected
KISS galaxies in order to gain a better insight into the nature of
radio-emitting galaxies in the local universe (z < 0.1). No dwarf galaxies were
detected, despite the large numbers of low-luminosity galaxies present in KISS,
suggesting that lower mass, lower luminosity objects do not possess strong
galaxian-scale magnetic fields. Due to the selection technique used for KISS,
our radio ELGs represent a quasi-volume-limited sample, which allows us to
develop a clearer picture of the radio galaxy population at low redshift.
Nearly 2/3rds of the KISS radio galaxies are starburst/star-forming galaxies,
which is in stark contrast to the results of flux-limited radio surveys that
are dominated by AGNs and elliptical galaxies (i.e., classic radio galaxies).
While there are many AGNs among the KISS radio galaxies, there are no objects
with large radio powers in our local volume. We derive a radio luminosity
function (RLF) for the KISS ELGs that agrees very well with previous RLFs that

The Motions of Clusters of Galaxies and the Dipoles of the Peculiar Velocity Field
In preceding papers of this series, TF relations for galaxies in 24 clusters
with radial velocities between 1000 and 9200 km/s (SCI sample) were obtained, a
Tully-Fisher (TF) template relation was constructed and mean offsets of each
cluster with respect to the template obtained. Here, an estimate of the
line-of-sight peculiar velocities of the clusters and their associated errors
are given. It is found that cluster peculiar velocities in the Cosmic Microwave
Background reference frame do not exceed 600 k/ms and that their distribution
has a line-of-sight dispersion of 300 k/ms, suggesting a more quiescent cluster
peculiar velocity field than previously reported. When measured in a reference
frame in which the Local Group is at rest, the set of clusters at cz > 3000
km/s exhibits a dipole moment in agreement with that of the CMB, both in
amplitude and apex direction. It is estimated that the bulk flow of a sphere of
6000 km/s radius in the CMB reference frame is between 140 and 320 km/s. These

AGC 226067: A possible interacting low-mass system
We present Arecibo, GBT, VLA and WIYN/pODI observations of the ALFALFA source
AGC 226067. Originally identified as an ultra-compact high velocity cloud and
candidate Local Group galaxy, AGC 226067 is spatially and kinematically
coincident with the Virgo cluster, and the identification by multiple groups of
an optical counterpart with no resolved stars supports the interpretation that
this systems lies at the Virgo distance (D=17 Mpc). The combined observations
reveal that the system consists of multiple components: a central HI source
associated with the optical counterpart (AGC 226067), a smaller HI-only
component (AGC 229490), a second optical component (AGC 229491), and extended
low surface brightness HI. Only ~1/4 of the single-dish HI emission is
associated with AGC 226067; as a result, we find M_HI/L_g ~ 6 Msun/Lsun, which
is lower than previous work. At D=17 Mpc, AGC 226067 has an HI mass of 1.5 x
10^7 Msun and L_g = 2.4 x 10^6 Lsun, AGC 229490 (the HI-only component) has
M_HI = 3.6 x 10^6 Msun, and AGC 229491 (the second optical component) has L_g =
3.6 x 10^5 Lsun. The nature of this system of three sources is uncertain: AGC
226067 and AGC 229490 may be connected by an HI bridge, and AGC 229490 and AGC
229491 are separated by only 0.5'. The current data do not resolve the HI in
AGC 229490 and its origin is unclear. We discuss possible scenarios for this
system of objects: an interacting system of dwarf galaxies, accretion of
