Insights on novel biologically active natural products: 7-isopentenyloxycoumarin.
7-Isopentenyloxycoumarin is a prenyloxyphenylpropanoid derivative found in low concentration in a restricted number of plant families (Apiaceae, Asteraceae, and Rutaceae). Synthetic schemes were recently developed enabling sufficient quantities of the title coumarin to be obtained in order to evidence its valuable biological effects, mainly as an anticancer agent. The aim of this review is to examine the phytochemical and pharmacological properties of this compound
Optimal estimation of entanglement and discord in two-qubit states
Recently, the fast development of quantum technologies led to the need for
tools allowing the characterization of quantum resources. In particular, the
ability to estimate non-classical aspects, e.g. entanglement and quantum
discord, in two-qubit systems, is relevant to optimise the performance of
quantum information processes. Here we present an experiment in which the
amount of entanglement and discord are measured exploiting different
estimators. Among them, some will prove to be optimal, i.e., able to reach the
ultimate precision bound allowed by quantum mechanics. These estimation
techniques have been tested with a specific family of states ranging from
nearly pure Bell states to completely mixed states. This work represents a
significant step in the development of reliable metrological tools for quantum
technologies
Ideological polarization, policy continuity: back to the majoritarian principle?
This introduction to the Italian Politics 2023 special issue gives an overview of the main events characterizing Italian politics during a year of large-scale policy reforms, presidential and parliamentary elections, and the unexpected Russian invasion of Ukraine. The authors pose three questions concerning Italian politics during the year gone by. First, from an institutional viewpoint, they ask whether the revival of majoritarianism as a principle of government formation represents the prelude to a return to enduring party-system bipolarity. Second, from an electoral and public policy perspective, they ask whether the formation of a government led by what many perceive as a radical right party betokens the start of a correspondingly radical shift in Italian public policy. Third, from an international relations perspective, they ask about the extent to which the Meloni government’s attitude to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and more generally to Italy’s position on the world stage and in international affairs, is likely to differ from that adopted by Draghi. The chapter elaborates on the three questions by tracing how the events of 2022 generated much more continuity than expected

Phytochemistry and Pharmacology of Boronia Pinnata Sm
Boronia pinnata Sm. (Rutaceae) is a plant that is widespread in New South Wales (Australia). Although there are no reports about the use of this species in the local ethnomedical traditions, recent investigations led to the characterization of several secondary metabolites, most belonging to the class of prenyloxyphenylpropanoids. Some of the compounds extracted from B. pinnata showed valuable biological properties, such as anti-inflammatory activity and in vitro inhibition of growth of Helicobacter pylori. The aim of this review is to cover what has been reported so far in the literature on the title plant from a phytochemical and pharmacological point of view
Phytochemistry of the Genus Trichocolea
The genus Trichocolea (Fam. Trichocoleaceae) comprise 31 species of liverworts, most of which are endemic in a wide geographical area of the southern Pacific Ocean including New Zealand, Tasmania, and South Australia. Although few reports have been reported on the phytochemistry and pharmacognosy of these briophytes, data reported so far show a great pharmacological potential for their secondary metabolites. Phytochemicals isolated from Trichocolea spp. include benzoate esters, flavonoids, and diterpenes. The reported biological activities of these natural compounds refer to cancer cells growth inhibitory, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-oxidant effects. The aim of this short review is to examine in detail from a phytochemical and pharmacological point of view what is reported in the current literature about the properties of phytopreparations or individual chemicals obtained from liverworts belonging to the Trichocolea genus
In vivo anti-inflammatory activity of some naturally occurring O- and N-prenyl secondary metabolites.
A series of O- and N-prenyl secondary metabolites of insect, fungal, and plant origin have been evaluated for their topical anti-inflammatory activity using the Croton oil ear test in mice as a model of acute inflammation. Some of the tested compounds revealed an effect (ID50 = 0.31 +0.56 μmol/cm2) comparable with that of the reference non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin (ID50 = 0.23 μmol/cm2)

Effect of PD98059, a selective MAPK3/MAPK1 inhibitor, on acute lung injury in mice.
The aim of the present study is to evaluate the contribution of mitogen-activated protein kinase 1–3 (MAPK3/MAPK1) in a model of acute lung inflammation in mice. Injection of carrageenan into the pleural cavity of mice elicited an acute inflammatory response characterized by: accumulation of fluid containing a large number of neutrophils (PMNs) in the pleural cavity, infiltration of PMNs in lung tissues and subsequent adhesion molecule expression (I-CAM and P-selectin), lipid peroxidation, and increased production of tumour necrosis factor-α, (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Furthermore, carrageenan induced lung apoptosis (Bax and Bcl-2 expression) as well as nitrotyrosine formation, NF-κB activation, and pJNK expression, as determined by immunohistochemical analysis of lung tissues and the degree of lung inflammation and tissue injury (histological score). Administration of PD98059, an inhibitor of MAPK3/MAPK1 (10 mg/kg) 1 h after carrageenan caused a reduction in all the parameters of inflammation measured. Thus, based on these findings we propose that inhibitors of the MAPK3/MAPK1 signaling pathways, such as PD98059, may be useful in the treatment of various inflammatory diseases
