    Classical theta constants vs. lattice theta series, and super string partition functions

    Recently, various possible expressions for the vacuum-to-vacuum superstring amplitudes has been proposed at genus g=3,4,5g=3,4,5. To compare the different proposals, here we will present a careful analysis of the comparison between the two main technical tools adopted to realize the proposals: the classical theta constants and the lattice theta series. We compute the relevant Fourier coefficients in order to relate the two spaces. We will prove the equivalence up to genus 4. In genus five we will show that the solutions are equivalent modulo the Schottky form and coincide if we impose the vanishing of the cosmological constant.Comment: 21 page

    The vanishing of two-point functions for three-loop superstring scattering amplitudes

    In this paper we show that the two-point function for the three-loop chiral superstring measure ansatz proposed by Cacciatori, Dalla Piazza, and van Geemen vanishes. Our proof uses the reformulation of ansatz in terms of even cosets, theta functions, and specifically the theory of the Γ00\Gamma_{00} linear system on Jacobians introduced by van Geemen and van der Geer. At the two-loop level, where the amplitudes were computed by D'Hoker and Phong, we give a new proof of the vanishing of the two-point function (which was proven by them). We also discuss the possible approaches to proving the vanishing of the two-point function for the proposed ansatz in higher genera

    A Bayesian defect-based physics-guided neural network model for probabilistic fatigue endurance limit evaluation

    Accurate fatigue assessment of material plagued by defects is of utmost importance to guarantee safety and service continuity in engineering components. This study shows how state-of-the-art semi-empirical models can be endowed with additional defect descriptors to probabilistically predict the occurrence of fatigue failures by exploiting advanced Bayesian Physics-guided Neural Network (B-PGNN) approaches. A B-PGNN is thereby developed to predict the fatigue failure probability of a sample containing defects, referred to a given fatigue endurance limit. In this framework, a robustly calibrated El Haddad's curve is exploited as the prior physics reinforcement of the probabilistic model, i.e., prior knowledge. Following, a likelihood function is built and the B-PGNN is trained via Bayesian Inference, thus calculating the posterior of the parameters. The arbitrariness of the choice of the related architecture is circumvented through a Bayesian model selection strategy. A case-study is analysed to prove the robustness of the proposed approach. This methodology proposes an advanced practical approach to help support the probabilistic design against fatigue failure

    Worrying about 'vertical landscapes'. Terraced olive groves and ecosystem services in marginal land in central Italy

    Terraced Mediterranean areas are distinctive man-made landscapes with historical and cultural relevance. Terraced land abandonment driven by physical and economic constraints had important ecological consequences. This study focuses on a marginal agricultural district in southern Latium, central Italy, where terracing dated back to the Roman period and olive groves are the main agricultural use. A diachronic assessment of land-use transformations was carried out to identify landscape dynamics and drivers of change around terraced land. Terraced landscape systems (TLS), derived from spatial aggregation of neighboring terraced patches, have been analyzed for landscape transformations considering slope as the main stratification variable. Structural and functional characteristics of TLS were analyzed using a landscape ecology approach. Soil bio-chemical indicators were finally assessed to study the impact of terraced olive agro-ecosystems on soil-related ecosystems services. The empirical findings outlined that TLS in central Italy are sensitive to urbanization and land abandonment. Cultivated terraces prevailed up to gentle-medium slope land, uncultivated and wooded areas dominated terraces on steep slopes. In this context, poly-cultural olive groves proved to be a cropping system particularly resilient to global change, irrespective of land slope. Terraced systems and extensive poly-cultural olive groves play a role in preserving ecosystem integrity, landscape quality, soil functionality and, therefore, environmental sustainability

    A method for yield and cycle time improvements in Al alloy casting with enhanced conductivity steel for die construction

    A die for Al alloy casting must be designed to achieve the expected quality levels. Moreover, the casting unit cost must be regarded as the objective function to be minimised It can be expressed as a function of the quantity of materials and energy to be used, cycle time and equipment investment. This work compares the performance of the die with inserts manufactured using the usual 1.2343 steel with that of the innovative 1.2383. The latter is considered due to its enhanced thermal conductivity, despite being more expensive. Simulation experiments are designed to evaluate different die layouts. The quality design solutions are evaluated against the cost objective function in order to identify the optimal die choice. A case study on gravity die casting (GDC) of an AlSi7Mg0.3 engine head shows faster solidification dynamics when using 1.2383 instead of 1.2343 steel. This reduces the feeder volume, thus increasing the production yield and speeding up the cycle time with a leverage effect. The higher investment cost for the inserts is rapidly returned thanks to the reduction in variable costs.     Spectral decomposition of starbursts and AGNs in 5-8 micron Spitzer IRS spectra of local ULIRGs

    We present an analysis of the 5-8 micron Spitzer-IRS spectra of a sample of 68 local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). Our diagnostic technique allows a clear separation of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and starburst (SB) components in the observed mid-IR emission, and a simple analytic model provides a quantitative estimate of the AGN/starburst contribution to the bolometric luminosity. We show that AGNs are ~30 times brighter at 6 micron than starbursts with the same bolometric luminosity, so that even faint AGNs can be detected. Star formation events are confirmed as the dominant power source for extreme infrared activity, since ~85% of ULIRG luminosity arises from the SB component.     An integrated swot-pestle-ahp model assessing sustainability in adaptive reuse projects

    In the recent past, sustainable development has been considered a major issue for urban and regional studies. Adaptive reuse appears to be a practical solution for sustainable urban development. Beyond and in addition to a conceptual base consistent with circular economy and sustainability principles, how do we know if adaptive reuse is actually sustainable, provided that it constitutes a multidisciplinary and multilevel process? The present study aims at evaluating, in as much as feasible quantitative terms, adaptive reuse practices sustainability. This was attained using a set of indicators, developed combining PESTLE (the Political, Economic, Technical, Social, Legal, and Environmental aspects) and SWOT (the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) approaches, of which the results were subjected to evaluation by experts (pairwise comparisons), following the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The indicators representing strengths and opportunities of the process were calculated to be of higher value (overall level of final cumulative indicators values; 70.4%) compared with indicators representing weaknesses and threats. Enhancing strengths and opportunities and counteracting weaknesses and threats contribute making the potential of adaptive reuse practices in urban sustainability more evident. Among analysis dimensions, political and economic aspects rank first, followed by environmental, socio-cultural, technological-technical, and legal aspect. The empirical results of this paper serve as a useful reference point for decision-making and policy formulation addressing adaptive reuse practices in sustainable development strategies

    Transverse fatigue behaviour and residual stress analyses of double sided FSW aluminium alloy joints

    Friction stir welding (FSW) since its invention has been attracting relevant interest for joining aluminium alloys. Due to the nature of this process, the materials can be joint without melting. Thanks to this peculiar characteristic, the issues associated with the cooling from liquid phase are avoided or considerably reduced, such as cracking, porosity, and defects. However, as well as other well-established welding techniques, the FSW process gives rise to formation of residual stress in the welding region and surrounding volume: heat and thermo-mechanical affected zones. Presence of residual stress in a mechanical component is well-known to affect its performance, particularly regarding fatigue at high number of cycles. Another aspect that influences the fatigue life is the underlying microstructure. In this work, we firstly study the residual stress field and the underlying microstructural features arising in FSW butt joints and their effect on the fatigue performance of this type of weldments. The evaluation of residual stress field is carried out by means of modern experimental techniques. In the first instance, synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction was employed for two-dimensional full field maps of residual stress. Corroboration of these measurements was done by exploiting the capability of focused ion beam and digital image correlation (FIB-DIC), which is able to deliver pointwise absolute measurement of residual stress. A set of FSW samples were then tested under uniaxial fatigue loading at several loading ranges, in the high cycle fatigue regime, in order to understand whether the severity of loads affects the crack path and life endurance. Fractographic and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis then revealed crack nucleation site and propagation mechanisms with the respect of the underlying microstructure.     Metabolic and Hormonal Determinants of Glomerular Filtration Rate and Renal Hemodynamics in Severely Obese Individuals.

    OBJECTIVE: Renal function is often compromised in severe obesity. A true measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is unusual, and how estimation formulae (EstForm) perform in such individuals is unclear. We characterized renal function and hemodynamics in severely obese individuals, assessing the reliability of EstForm. METHODS: We measured GFR (mGFR) by iohexol plasma clearance, renal plasma flow (RPF) by 123I-ortho-iodo-hippurate, basal and stimulated vascular renal indices, endothelium-dependent and -independent vasodilation using flow-mediated dilation (FMD) as well as metabolic and hormonal profile in morbid, otherwise healthy, obese subjects. RESULTS: Compared with mGFR, the better performing EstForm was CKD-EPI (5.3 ml/min/1.73 m2 bias by Bland-Altman analysis). mGFR was directly related with RPF, total and incremental glucose AUC, and inversely with PTH and h8 cortisol. Patients with mGFR below the median shown significantly higher PTH and lower vitamin D3. Basal or dynamic renal resistive index, FMD, pulse wave velocity were not related with mGFR. In an adjusted regression model, renal diameter and plasma flow remained related with mGFR (R2 = 0.67), accounting for 15% and 21% of mGFR variance, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: CKD-EPI formula should be preferred in morbid obesity; glucose increments during oral glucose tolerance test correlate with hyperfiltration; RPF and diameter are independent determinants of mGFR; slightly high PTH values, frequent in obesity, might influence mGFR
