Previous studies have demonstrated that justifying the social, economic, and political systems is associated with psychological well-being, which has been termed as the palliative function of ideology. However, little research has been conducted on gender stereotypes among children, comparing by socioeconomic status. This study aimed to fill this gap in the system justification literature. We present data from the Chilean version of the International Survey of Children Well-Being (ISCWeB), which was conducted in 2012. We found that the palliative function of gender stereotypes is present among this sample, being qualified by a socioeconomic status by hostile gender stereotype interaction. In other words, the effect on the psychological well-being was observed in low-status, but not in high-status students. These results extend the previous knowledge about the palliative function of the ideology, suggesting why the low-status members of a society actively engage in system justification

Indexaci贸n: Web of Science; Scopus; Scielo.

Indexaci贸n: Scopus. In this article we propose a mediation model for the association between system justification and psychological well-being (i.e., the palliative function of ideology), based on system justification theory and compensatory control theory. Specifically, we argue that endorsing system-justifying beliefs leads to increased perceived personal control, which in turn predicts higher well-being. We used a convenience sample of students from two Peruvian universities. The results showed that system justification was related to general psychological well-being and personal control. In addition, indigenous students rated lower on system justification, general psychological well-being, self-esteem and personal control. Next, we found that the association between system justification and general psychological well-being was stronger among indigenous students, and this relationship was partially mediated by personal control. In addition, we showed that the mediation model is moderated by ethnicity, so that personal control is a mediator only among non-indigenous participants. We conclude that personal control is a mechanism involved in the palliative function of ideology among this group. Finally, we discuss possible explanations for the mechanisms involved in the palliative function of ideology among low-status individuals. 漏 2018, 漏 2018 Fundacion Infancia y Aprendizaje.

A Response to Do higher-class individuals feel more entitled? The role of system -justifying belief (Xu et al., 2019)

In the article Do higher-class individuals feel more entitled? The role of system-justifying belief, Xu et al. (2019) argued that higher class individuals would feel more entitled when perceiving social hierarchies as fair and legitimate. These authors presented two studies - correlational and experimental - to support this hypothesis. Nevertheless, the experiment reported in Study 2 presents important limitations. An analysis of the data, made publicly available by the authors, suggests that randomization failed. Treating the data as correlational shows that the main hypothesis stated by Xu et al. (2019) is not supported. This does not invalidate the theoretical argument by itself, but it means that further research is necessary to properly contrast the hypotheses proposed by these authors
