    Drag reduction obtained by rounding vertical corners on a box-shaped ground vehicle

    A box-shaped ground vehicle was used to simulate the aerodynamic drag of delivery vans, trucks, and motor homes. A coast-down method was used to define the drag of this vehicle in a configuration with all square corners and a modified configuration with the four vertical corners rounded. The tests ranged in velocity from 30 miles per hour to 65 miles per hour, and Reynolds numbers ranged from 4.4 x 1,000,000 to 1.0 x 10 to the 7th power based on vehicle length. The modified configuration showed a reduction in aerodynamic drag of about 40 percent as compared to the square cornered configuration

    Observational and theoretical studies of the evolving structure of baroclinic waves

    Dynamical processes involved in comma cloud formation, and passive tracer evolution in a baroclinic wave are discussed. An analytical solution was obtained demonstrating the complex nongeostrophic flow pattern involved in the redistribution of low level constituents in a finite amplitude baroclinic wave, and in the formation of the typical humidity and cloud distributions in such a wave. Observational and theoretical studies of blocking weather patterns in middle latitude flows were studied. The differences in the energy and enstrophy cascades in blocking and nonblocking situations were shown. It was established that pronounced upscale flow of both of these quantities, from intermediate to planetary scales, occurs during blocking episodes. The upscale flux of enstrophy, in particular, suggests that the persistence of blocking periods may be due to reduced dissipation of the large scale circulation and therefore entail some above normal predictability

The coast-down technique was used to define the drag of the original vehicle, having all square corners, and several modifications of the vehicle. Test velocities ranged up to 65 miles per hour, which provided maximum Reynolds numbers of 1 times 10 to the 7th power based on vehicle length. One combination of modifications produced a reduction in aerodynamic drag of 61 percent as compared with the original square-cornered vehicle

    Several specific processing steps as part of a total process sequence for manufacturing silicon solar cells were studied. Ion implantation was identified as the preferred process step for impurity doping. Unanalyzed beam ion implantation was shown to have major cost advantages over analyzed beam implantation. Further, high quality cells were fabricated using a high current unanalyzed beam. Mechanically masked plasma patterning of silicon nitride was shown to be capable of forming fine lines on silicon surfaces with spacings between mask and substrate as great as 250 micrometers. Extensive work was performed on advances in plated metallization. The need for the thick electroless palladium layer was eliminated. Further, copper was successfully utilized as a conductor layer utilizing nickel as a barrier to copper diffusion into the silicon. Plasma etching of silicon for texturing and saw damage removal was shown technically feasible but not cost effective compared to wet chemical etching techniques

    Intelligent Procedures for Intra-Day Updating of Call Center Agent Schedules

    For nearly all call centers, agent schedules are typically created several days or weeks prior to the time that agents report to work. After schedules are created, call center resource managers receive additional information that can affect forecasted workload and resource availability. In particular, there is significant evidence, both among practitioners and in the research literature, suggesting that actual call arrival volumes early in a scheduling period (typically an individual day or week) can provide valuable information about the call arrival pattern later in the same scheduling period. In this paper, we develop a flexible and powerful heuristic framework for managers to make intra-day resource adjustment decisions that take into account updated call forecasts, updated agent requirements, existing agent schedules, agents’ schedule flexibility, and associated incremental labor costs. We demonstrate the value of this methodology in managing the trade-off between labor costs and service levels to best meet variable rates of demand for service, using data from an actual call center

    The article presents a simulation study of performance-based call routing strategies using a variety of routing rules based on historic data such as average handling time and first call resolution rate. We demonstrate the relative benefits of various performance-based call routing strategies using actual data from a financial call center. In particular, our modeling results indicate that call routing based on adjusted average handle time (AAHT) and z-scores of AAHT are two strategies that can substantially improve overall call center performance and customer satisfaction

    A Reassessment of Heavy-Duty Truck Aerodynamic Design Features and Priorities

    Between 1973 and 1982, the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center conducted "coast-down" tests demonstrating means for reducing the drag of trucks, buses, and motor homes. Numerous configurations were evaluated using a box-shaped test van, a two-axle truck, and a tractor-semitrailer combination. Results from three configurations of the test van are of interest now in view of a trucking industry goal of a 0.25 drag coefficient for tractor-semitrailer combinations. Two test van configurations with blunt-base geometry, similar to present day trucks (one configuration has square front comers and the other has rounded front comers), quantify the base drag increase associated with reduced forebody drag. Hoemer's equations predict this trend; however, test van results, reinforced by large-scale air vehicle data, indicate that Hoemer's formula greatly underestimates this dependence of base drag on forebody efficiency. The demonstrated increase in base drag associated with forebody refinement indicates that the goal of a 0.25 drag coefficient will not be achieved without also reducing afterbody drag. A third configuration of the test van had a truncated boattail to reduce afterbody drag and achieved a drag coefficient of 0.242. These results are included here and references are identified for other means of reducing afterbody drag

    Salmonella immunization confers cross protection without confounding pre-harvest serologic monitoring

    Food borne Salmonella Typhimurium is a valid concern for the global pork industry. An attenuated oral swine Salmonella Choleraesuis vaccine has proven to be an effective tool for the pre-harvest reduction of carrier rates for multiple Salmonella spp. Serum antibody assays are available to monitor exposure to wild-type Salmonella infection. This clinical study assessed protection induced by an attenuated oral Salmonella Choleraesuis vaccine against challenge infection with S. Typhimurium in swine. A serologic antibody assay was concurrently evaluated for its ability to differentiate vaccinated pigs from those challenged with Salmonella Typhimurium. Vaccination significantly improved clinical scores, pyrexia, and enteric lesion prevalence, while numerically improving average daily weight gain, and group body weight variation in comparison to unvaccinated/challenged pigs. Vaccination, while protecting pigs against disease, did not generate detectable serum antibodies prior to challenge. No vaccinated animals became seropositive prior to challenge, indicating that conventional ELISA tests could be used in vaccinated pigs to monitor wild-type exposure. Following challenge, there was no detectable difference between vaccinated/challenged and non-vaccinated/challenged animals. All strict control pigs remained serum antibody negative. These findings support the use of this vaccine to protect swine against S. Typhimurium, without confounding pre-harvest Salmonella serologic monitoring programs
