The main causes of back pain in children are injury, infections, cancer and other diseases proces - ses that can cause referred pain to that level. It is widely accepted that idiopathic scoliosis in childhood is not a painful process, therefore, in the presence of a painful scoliosis should conduct a detailed study to find the cause of pain. We report the case of a girl with painful scoliosis caused by a rib osteoblastoma, this is a rare location of the osteoblastoma and is a rare cause of scoliosis

Beyond the primary influences of parents and peers on very young adolescent alcohol use: evidence of independent community effects

This study examined the extent to which young adolescent alcohol use was related to alcohol-related norms and law enforcement of underage alcohol use, after accounting for known strong parent and peer correlates. Our sample consisted of 7,674 students ((X) over bar age = 12 years) from 30 Australian communities. Two-level (individuals nested within communities) binary logistic regression was used to examine relationships between recent alcohol use (last 30 days) and perceived community norms about alcohol use, perceived law enforcement of underage alcohol use, parent alcohol use, parent permissiveness of adolescent alcohol use, peer alcohol use, and demographic factors. Results indicated that community norms and perceived law enforcement of alcohol use were associated with alcohol use and this association was independent of parent and peer factors. After accounting for proximal social correlates, community factors were significantly associated with alcohol use among very young adolescents

The potential fecundity and body size were evaluated in Haematopota italica Meig. from the analysis of ovariole number and wing length in 460 field-collected females. This correlation looks representative (r=0.618) and the population potential fecundity without disection can be deduced. It has a very great deal importante, for field biology, in order to know the role played by tabanids in the posible disease transmission from cattle or man.

In the coming years, buildings will become energy producers and consumers at the same time. To optimize the system operation, smart control algorithms shall manage the energy demand of an individual building and of entire districts of buildings. The algorithms goals shall maximize the use of the renewable energy produced on-site and using the energy from the electric grid at the most appropriate time. The current study focus on the results of a multilevel optimization system tested in real-time. The experiment performed reproduces, in two laboratories 100 km away, the behavior of two buildings of similar characteristics hypothetically located in the same district. This is done with energy building models which allows emulating their energy demands connected to real laboratory equipment (heat pumps, PV, batteries and management and control systems). Results of the experiments show that the smart activation of the building’s thermal mass can bring similar benefits than installing an electric battery that acts following smart or self-consumption management strategies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Need to Develop Standard Measures of Patient Adherence for Big Data: Viewpoint

    Get PDF
Despite half a century of dedicated studies, medication adherence remains far from perfect, with many patients not taking their medications as prescribed. The magnitude of this problem is rising, jeopardizing the effectiveness of evidence-based therapies. An important reason for this is the unprecedented demographic change at the beginning of the 21st century. Aging leads to multimorbidity and complex therapeutic regimens that create a fertile ground for nonadherence. As this scenario is a global problem, it needs a worldwide answer. Could this answer be provided, given the new opportunities created by the digitization of health care? Daily, health-related information is being collected in electronic health records, pharmacy dispensing databases, health insurance systems, and national health system records. These big data repositories offer a unique chance to study adherence both retrospectively and prospectively at the population level, as well as its related factors. In order to make full use of this opportunity, there is a need to develop standardized measures of adherence, which can be applied globally to big data and will inform scientific research, clinical practice, and public health. These standardized measures may also enable a better understanding of the relationship between adherence and clinical outcomes, and allow for fair benchmarking of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of adherence-targeting interventions. Unfortunately, despite this obvious need, such standards are still lacking. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to call for a consensus on global standards for measuring adherence with big data. More specifically, sound standards of formatting and analyzing big data are needed in order to assess, uniformly present, and compare patterns of medication adherence across studies. Wide use of these standards may improve adherence and make health care systems more effective and sustainable

    Simplicial quantum dynamics

Present-day quantum field theory can be regularized by a decomposition into quantum simplices. This replaces the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space by a high-dimensional spinor space and singular canonical Lie groups by regular spin groups. It radically changes the uncertainty principle for small distances. Gaugeons, including the gravitational, are represented as bound fermion-pairs, and space-time curvature as a singular organized limit of quantum non-commutativity. Keywords: Quantum logic, quantum set theory, quantum gravity, quantum topology, simplicial quantization.Comment: 25 pages. 1 table.
