    This study aimed to investigate the relationship and the influence of psychosocial factors such as self-esteem, family, friends and society, and the knowledge of the dangers of drug abuse among drug addicts in prison. This study is a cross-sectional survey. A research model was based on theories of psychosocial by Chein (1984) and the results of previous studies. The study was conducted at the Alor Setar Kedah prison for 167 prisoners of drug abuse. Questionnaire which consisted of seven parts were distributed to the subjects, and the parts were on personal information, aspects of selfesteem, family influence, peer influence, community influence, knowledge of the dangers of drugs and on relapse tendency aspect. Data obtained from the questionnaires was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Pearson Correlation (r) and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Test results showed that psychosocial factors, such as aspects of self-esteem, family, friends and society and also the knowledge of dangerous drugs, had significant relationships with relapse. The result of regression analysis showed that the community influence was the most dominant variable affecting the prisoners drug addiction. These results showed that the public has a strong influence on the ex-addicts, either to continue to be involved with drugs or to accept them back to a healthier new life together with other members of the community. Society, in general should change their thinking, and have a more open attitude to the drug addicts as a new person to return to the community

    A prospective study of couple underwent Minimal Ovarian Hyperstimulation (MOH)and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) procedure in Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah from 1st January 2013 till 30th June 2014. This study accomplished to evaluate the effectiveness of MOH+IUl as foremost option in infertility modalities. The intention is to identify favorable and appropriate factors that impact successful of IUI. Out of total of 211 MOH+IUI cycles, the success pregnancy rates were 9.95%. This study had approved that chances of getting pregnant were high with MOH+IUI methods in female patients with normal BMI, unexplained infertility causal factor, male couples with high sperm morphology count and thick endometrial thickness during IUI procedure. Most of the patient that succeed to conceive had normal BMI about 17.4%compared with the unfortunate group which had had higher BMI; (p=0.001). The endometrial thickness in pregnant group following MOH+IUI was 11.05mm and as compared to unpregnant group 9.85mm; 16.3% (p=005). Causes of infertility had great effect to gain success of conceive. Study show significant different (p=001) whereby the unexplained infertility had higher pregnancy rate. Sperm morphology also had notable influence to achieve successful of pregnancy (p=0.002). Fortunately, no OHSS incidence was reported in this study. Younger age group (20-25 years) had22.2% pregnancy rate, however it was insignificant statistically. The other factors such as duration and type of infertility, sperm count and motility, numbers of cycles attempted, and number of follicles did not show statistically significant in prognosticating successful outcome of MOH+IUI

    Students’ Inclination towards English Language as Medium of Instruction in the Teaching of Science and Mathematics

    AbstractMalay language, the national language of Malaysia has been the medium of instruction for Science and Mathematics for the past four and a half decades in Malaysia. The government however changed the medium of instruction of these subjects to English in January 2003. The “Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English” (PPSMI) policy was implemented in all primary and secondary schools. It aims to improve the English language proficiency among students as well as the learning and achievement level in science and mathematics. This paper presents findings of the study on students’ inclination towards English language as medium of instruction in teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in Higher Learning Institutions in Malaysia. The respondents were 291 undergraduate students from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and Faculty of Education (FPEND) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). A questionnaire pertaining to students’ inclination was used as research instrument. Using descriptive statistics, ANOVA and t-test, the study found that undergraduate students of FST and FPEND had an inclination towards English as medium of instruction in the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics. Using the Post-Hoc test, it is found that Indian students and students from other races than Malay and Chinese have greater inclination towards English as medium of instruction in teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in UKM for both faculties. However, FST students who studied in Mandarin and Tamil at pre-university level (STPM) had higher inclination compared to those who used Malay language or even English

    The Readiness of Mathematics and Science Lecturers to Teach in English from Students’ Perspective

    AbstractThe policy change of teaching Mathematics and Science from Malay to English language, which started in 2003 in school given an impact to the teaching and learning process in Public Higher Learning Institutions, including Universiti Keban Malaysia (UKM). Consequently, UKM administrators have directed all faculties offering Mathematics and Science cour follow the change starting with the first year courses. It is suggested that 30% of the courses is to be conducted in English 50% and 70% of the courses offered in the following second and third year, respectively would be conducted in English study aims at gauging the readiness of lecturers from the School of Mathematical Sciences (PPSM) to conduct courses in E from the perception of students. Questionnaires are distributed to first year students from the Faculty of Science and Techn (FST) and also from the Faculty of Education (FPEND) for the academic session of 2009/2010. From the results of the stud found that the students are generally satisfied with the teaching and learning conducted in English at the School of Mathem Sciences

    Students’ Perceptions of the Implementation of Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English

    AbstractThis study aims to investigate the students’ perceptions of Teaching and Learning Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Among the information that can be used to achieve this aim are students’ views and feedbacks. A survey was conducted to gather views of students from the Faculty of Education (FPEND) and the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST). Statistical analysis was performed on the results of the survey. Our findings show that students from these two faculties tend to have a positive view towards PPSMI in UKM. However, given choices, they are more likely to prefer teaching and learning Science and Mathematics in Malay language, and they believed that the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics is more effective in Malay medium
