Over the span of decades, sustained research efforts have been dedicated to the realm of occupational safety and health practices within high-hazard work environments. This focus stems from the alarming frequency of accidents and injuries occurring within these settings. Recent research findings have consistently underscored the pivotal role of human factors – encompassing individual perspectives, communication, attitudes, and behaviors – as the chief catalysts behind such unfortunate incidents in high-risk workplaces. Nevertheless, the trajectory of these accidents and injuries can be altered, and the toll mitigated, by scrutinizing the safety commitment of employees. This commitment, crucial for ensuring safer work environments, can be cultivated through consistent interaction and communication with leaders. This interaction serves to enhance employees’ knowledge and awareness concerning safety practices. In this context, the current article delves into the profound impact of leadership communication on employees’ safety commitment within the oil and gas industry. Employing a quantitative approach, the study relied on survey-type questionnaires to fulfill its objectives. From maintenance and operation departments, a random selection of 260 technical employees participated as respondents. The findings convincingly establish that leadership communication exerts a substantial and significant influence on employees’ safety commitment. Pectins are complex carbohydrate molecules that are used in numerous food applications as a gelling agent, thickener, stabiliser, and emulsifier. Dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) is one of the tropical fruits that belong to the cactus family, Cactaceae. Since the peels of dragon fruit are often discarded as waste, it would be an advantage to convert it into a value-added product such as pectin. The objective of this study was to investigate the extraction of pectin from dragon fruit peels under different extraction time using hot water extraction method. The dragon fruit peels were extracted using distilled water at 80 °C with different extraction time of 20, 40, 60 and 80 min. The extracted pectin was characterised by its yield, moisture and ash content, degree of esterification and antioxidant activity. Determination of moisture and ash content was conducted using AOAC standard method. The determination of the degree of esterification of pectin was performed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). DPPH assay was used to determine the antioxidant activity of the pectin extract. Based on the result, the yield of pectin decreases (20.34 to 16.20 %) with the increase of extraction time, moisture contents were between 4 to 6 % while ash contents were between 7 to 10 %. Pectin from dragon fruit peels was determined as low methoxyl pectin and has high percentage of antioxidant activity with low value of inhibition concentration (IC50) (0.0063 to 0.0080 mg/mL). 60 min extraction sample exhibits the highest antioxidant activity (81.91 % at 40 μg/mL), followed by 80 min extraction (81.68 % at 40 μg/mL), 40 min extraction (81.38 % at 40 μg/mL) and 20 min extraction (81.31 % at 40 μg/mL)

Degradation pathway of phenol through ortho- cleavage by Candida tropicalis RETL-Cr1

Phenols and its derivatives are environmental pollutant commonly found in many industrial effluents. Despite being toxic, phenol can be utilized by microbes as carbon and energy sources. The strain utilized up to 3mM phenol as a sole source of carbon and energy. Phenol catabolism was confirmed through the detection of the intermediary products namely catechol and cis,cis-muconic acid. Catechol was formed at the earlier stage of the reaction mixture while cis,cis-muconic acid was formed at the later stage of the biodegradation process. The maximum concentration of catechol was 20.4 mg L after 7 h incubation. The HPLC chromatography detected muconic acid and enzymatic assays performed were found to be negative for catechol 2,3 dioxygenase activity. Hence, these results showed that this indigenous phenol-degrading yeast, Candida. tropicalis RETL-Cr1 (AY725426) seemed to metabolize phenol via ortho-cleavage pathwa

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of perception towards insurable risks on the general Takaful demand via risk-taking propensity among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. This study presented essential insights that would benefit Takaful operators in determining and enhancing general Takaful demand among SMEs. Studies have identified two major factors of risk behaviour that influence general insurance demand, which are the perception towards insurable risks (independent variable) and risk-taking propensity (moderator). This study presented theoretically significant information on the incorporation of perception towards insurable risks and risk-taking propensity to explain the general Takaful model. For this study, a total of 278 SMEs in Malaysia were sampled. All gathered data were analysed using AMOS for the testing of hypotheses. The results of structural equation modelling (SEM) revealed perception towards insurable risks as the key factor that drives the general Takaful confidence in decision making and risk-taking propensity as a moderator in the relationship between the perception towards insurable risks and general Takaful demand. Apart from providing a clearer overview of Takaful demand among SMEs in Malaysia, the obtained findings of this study also highlighted the significance of healthy and ethical behaviour in decision making in order to protect the organisational resources and accomplishments

Service recovery is a corrective action that is carried out immediately by the service provider if the service offered went wrong. The employee is responsible to handle the situation in order to ensure that the customer who might not be satisfied with the situation that happens turns to be satisfied. One of the concepts of the service recovery that have been discussed in the literature is related to service recovery performance. The researcher defined that service recovery performance is to focus on the performance of frontline employees. Service recovery performance is not about a strategy or action to handle a service recovery situation which among others are an apology, giving discounted price and compensation but more towards the behavior of the frontline employees getting engage in resolving the situation. Past researchers have identified that the management commitment to service quality which represented by several indicators may lead to the service recovery performance of the employees. However, the relationship has a missing link. The objective of this conceptual paper is to further discuss the relationship between management commitment to service quality and service recovery performance with the present mediating role of job embeddedness among frontline hotel employees in four and a five-star hotels. The proposition suggested in this paper may require support with further empirical findings to be carried out
