Multisite Microprobes for Electrochemical Recordings in Biological Dynamics

    Get PDF
For over 30 years, techniques have been developed that allow for the microscale (10-30 /mum) measurement of chemical signals with high temporal resolution (1-200 Hz). Such measurements, called in vivo electrochemical recordings, allow for the direct determination of neurotransmitter molecules and related compounds in biological systems. Multiple recordings, simultaneously performed at different, closely spaced, well defined locations throughout a three-dimensional tissue volume in the brain, are of interest in neuroscience. Developments in microelectronic techniques enable the fabrication of multi-electrode microprobes for recording extracellular action potentials generated by individual neurons simultaneously. A high-yield microfabrication process has been successfully developed for the fabrication of a novel semiconductor based, four-site silicon microprobe that involves a three-mask process and standard UV photolithography. A plasma process has been developed for dry etching of the gold electrodes and conducting lines. The electrochemical behavior of the microprobe is investigated by a high-speed computer-based in vitro electrochemical recording system. The electrochemical signals are measured at 5 Hz and varying gain. It is found that a selectivity of over 500:1 is achieved, and the signal to noise ratio of the recorded signal is particularly suitable for in vivo recordings

Curvature fluctuations and Lyapunov exponent at Melting

    Get PDF
We calculate the maximal Lyapunov exponent in constant-energy molecular dynamics simulations at the melting transition for finite clusters of 6 to 13 particles (model rare-gas and metallic systems) as well as for bulk rare-gas solid. For clusters, the Lyapunov exponent generally varies linearly with the total energy, but the slope changes sharply at the melting transition. In the bulk system, melting corresponds to a jump in the Lyapunov exponent, and this corresponds to a singularity in the variance of the curvature of the potential energy surface. In these systems there are two mechanisms of chaos -- local instability and parametric instability. We calculate the contribution of the parametric instability towards the chaoticity of these systems using a recently proposed formalism. The contribution of parametric instability is a continuous function of energy in small clusters but not in the bulk where the melting corresponds to a decrease in this quantity. This implies that the melting in small clusters does not lead to enhanced local instability.Comment: Revtex with 7 PS figures. To appear in Phys Rev

The dawn of the dead : (improbable) art after aI-zombie apocalypse

    Get PDF
In recent years there has been growing interest in artificial neural networks (ANNs) which are quickly becoming the primary device for machine learning. Used for finding patterns in large data sets, ANNs were also recently employed in many artistic contexts: as tools for artists, semi-independent creators of content, and even as invisible "critics" which / who predict our aesthetic preferences. The aim of this paper is to speculate about the disruptive effect of these ‘alien agencies’ on the (modernist) aesthetic regime of art centred around the notion of autonomy. The author examines how neural networks and connectionist epistemologies may potentially affect the most common ways of producing, circulating, and valorising art. He claims that the possibility of automatizing creativity and art criticism may lead to the emergence of a new aesthetic regime based on forms of dynamic, distributed and probabilistic governance

Fishery and GIS Based Spatio-Temporal Distribution Analysis of Smooth Blaasop, Lagocephalus inermis, in South-Eastern Arabian Sea

Investigations on distribution of species on a spatio-temporal scale has ecological and management significance. Study was carried out in one of the productive zones of south eastern Arabian sea on Lagocephalus inermis one of the emerging fishery resource from 2015 to 2017 in comparison with 2008. GIS tools was used to support fishery analysis, abundance and distribution of species. Average catch for 2015-17 period was 3456 t which showed twelve fold increase compared to 2008. Spatial and temporal analysis of the abundance of species showed a range from 7-277 kg/hr (Catch Per Hour) at a depth range of 20-100 m. Juveniles were observed more towards near shore area with aggregation in clayey region. Spatial indicators (spatial dispersion, directional dispersion and directional trend) were calculated by year. Spatial distribution value was highest in 2016 indicating a wider distribution of L. inermis, whereas this distribution was more compact in 2008. It was also observed that in 2008 the central tendency is located in the Southern-most part of the study area whereas during recent period shifted to the Northern side. Species associated with L. inermis were all mid- level carnivores similar to the species indicating a trophic cascading happening in the Arabian Sea

Synthesis and antiribosomal activities of 4′-O-, 6′-O-, 4″-O-, 4′,6′-O- and 4″,6″-O-derivatives in the kanamycin series indicate differing target selectivity patterns between the 4,5- and 4,6-series of disubstituted 2-deoxystreptamine aminoglycoside antibiotics

Chemistry for the efficient modification of the kanamycin class of 4,6-aminoglycosides at the 4′-position is presented. In all kanamycins but kanamycin B, 4′-O-alkylation is strongly detrimental to antiribosomal and antibacterial activity. Ethylation of kanamycin B at the 4″-position entails little loss of antiribosomal and antibacterial activity, but no increase of ribosomal selectivity. These results are contrasted with those for the 4,5-aminoglycosides, where 4′-O-alkylation of paromomycin causes only a minimal loss of activity but results in a significant increase in selectivity with a concomitant loss of ototoxicity

Influence of prophylaxis paste treatment on the abrasive wear of surface sealants

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the abrasive wear of surface sealants (Seal&Protect and K-0184 (experimental sealant)) and the influence of pre-treatment with mineral deposit forming prophylaxis pastes (NUPRO Sensodyne and NUPRO) on this wear. METHODS: One hundred and eight bovine dentine samples were randomly allocated to nine groups (1-9). Pre-treatment (10 s): groups 1-3: untreated, groups 4-6: NUPRO, groups 7-9: NUPRO Sensodyne. Sealing: groups 1, 4 and 7: unsealed, groups 2, 5 and 8: Seal&Protect, groups 3, 6 and 9: K-0184 (experimental sealer). Samples were then brushed with 12 000 brushing strokes (BS) with toothpaste slurry in an automatic brushing machine (120 BS/min; F = 2.5 N). Surface profiles were recorded at baseline, after pre-treatment and sealing and after each 2000 BS. RESULTS: Total profile change (wear or gain due to pre-treatment, treatment and 12 000 BS): groups 1, 4 and 7 (no surface sealant) showed a not significantly different wear of 18.48 ± 2.63 µm, 24.98 ± 3.02 µm and 21.50 ± 5.47 µm, respectively. Remaining groups (sealed) showed a gain in height with no significant difference among each other. Wear in sealed groups (2, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9) were not significantly different at all numbers of brushing strokes. Starting with 4000 BS, the wear in unsealed groups (1, 4 and 7) was statistically significantly higher compared to all other groups. CONCLUSION: Stability and wear resistance of surface sealants are not affected by pre-treatment of dentine with NUPRO Sensodyne. The surface sealants tested provide a stable protective surface layer on dentine, which lasts for at least 12 000 brushing strokes
