Comment on "Quantum back-reaction through the Bohmian particle"
In this Comment I point out some limitations of the proposal of Prezhdo and
Brooksby for coupling quantum and classical degrees of freedom
(Phys.Rev.Lett.86(2001)3215) if it is pushed too far.Comment: 1 page, REVTEX, no figure
Odd Parity Light Baryon Resonances
We use a consistent SU(6) extension of the meson-baryon chiral Lagrangian
within a coupled channel unitary approach in order to calculate the T-matrix
for meson-baryon scattering in s-wave. The building blocks of the scheme are
the pion and nucleon octets, the rho nonet and the Delta decuplet. We identify
poles in this unitary T-matrix and interpret them as resonances. We study here
the non exotic sectors with strangeness S=0,-1,-2,-3 and spin J=1/2, 3/2 and
5/2. Many of the poles generated can be associated with known N, Delta, Sigma,
Lambda and Xi resonances with negative parity. We show that most of the
low-lying three and four star odd parity baryon resonances with spin 1/2 and
3/2 can be related to multiplets of the spin-flavor symmetry group SU(6). This
study allows us to predict the spin-parity of the Xi(1620), Xi(1690), Xi(1950),
Xi(2250), Omega(2250) and Omega(2380) resonances, which have not been
determined experimentally yet.Comment: New appendix and references adde
Impediments to mixing classical and quantum dynamics
The dynamics of systems composed of a classical sector plus a quantum sector
is studied. We show that, even in the simplest cases, (i) the existence of a
consistent canonical description for such mixed systems is incompatible with
very basic requirements related to the time evolution of the two sectors when
they are decoupled. (ii) The classical sector cannot inherit quantum
fluctuations from the quantum sector. And, (iii) a coupling among the two
sectors is incompatible with the requirement of physical positivity of the
theory, i.e., there would be positive observables with a non positive
expectation value.Comment: RevTex, 21 pages. Title slightly modified and summary section adde
Temperature dependence of the anomalous effective action of fermions in two and four dimensions
The temperature dependence of the anomalous sector of the effective action of
fermions coupled to external gauge and pseudo-scalar fields is computed at
leading order in an expansion in the number of Lorentz indices in two and four
dimensions. The calculation preserves chiral symmetry and confirms that a
temperature dependence is compatible with axial anomaly saturation. The result
checks soft-pions theorems at zero temperature as well as recent results in the
literature for the pionic decay amplitude into static photons in the chirally
symmetric phase. The case of chiral fermions is also considered.Comment: RevTex, 19 pages, no figures. References adde
On the fraction of dark matter in charged massive particles (CHAMPs)
From various cosmological, astrophysical and terrestrial requirements, we
derive conservative upper bounds on the present-day fraction of the mass of the
Galactic dark matter (DM) halo in charged massive particles (CHAMPs). If dark
matter particles are neutral but decay lately into CHAMPs, the lack of
detection of heavy hydrogen in sea water and the vertical pressure equilibrium
in the Galactic disc turn out to put the most stringent bounds. Adopting very
conservative assumptions about the recoiling velocity of CHAMPs in the decay
and on the decay energy deposited in baryonic gas, we find that the lifetime
for decaying neutral DM must be > (0.9-3.4)x 10^3 Gyr. Even assuming the
gyroradii of CHAMPs in the Galactic magnetic field are too small for halo
CHAMPs to reach Earth, the present-day fraction of the mass of the Galactic
halo in CHAMPs should be < (0.4-1.4)x 10^{-2}. We show that redistributing the
DM through the coupling between CHAMPs and the ubiquitous magnetic fields
cannot be a solution to the cuspy halo problem in dwarf galaxies.Comment: 21 pages, 2 figures. To appear in JCA
QCD equation of state in a virial expansion
We describe recent three-flavor QCD lattice data for the pressure, speed of
soun d and interaction measure at nonzero temperature and vanishing chemical
potentia l within a virial expansion. For the deconfined phase we use a
phenomenological model which includes non-pert urbative effects from dimension
two gluon condensates that reproduce the free en ergy of quenched QCD very
well. The hadronic phase is parameterized by a generalized resonance-gas model.
Furthermore, we extend this approach to finite quark densities introducing an
ex plicit -dependence of the interaction. We calculate pressure,
quark-number density, entropy and energy density and compare to results of
lattice calculatio ns. We, additionally, investigate the structure of the phase
diagram by calculating the isobaric and isentropic lines as well as the
critical endpoint in the ()-plane.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Inflation-Produced Magnetic Fields in Nonlinear Electrodynamics
We study the generation of primeval magnetic fields during inflation era in
nonlinear theories of electrodynamics. Although the intensity of the produced
fields strongly depends on characteristics of inflation and on the form of
electromagnetic Lagrangian, our results do not exclude the possibility that
these fields could be astrophysically interesting.Comment: 6 page
Complex Probabilities on R^N as Real Probabilities on C^N and an Application to Path Integrals
We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for averages over complex
valued weight functions on R^N to be represented as statistical averages over
real, non-negative probability weights on C^N. Using this result, we show that
many path-integrals for time-ordered expectation values of bosonic degrees of
freedom in real-valued time can be expressed as statistical averages over
ensembles of paths with complex-valued coordinates, and then speculate on
possible consequences of this result for the relation between quantum and
classical mechanics.Comment: 4 pages, 0 figure
