Exact Finite-Size-Scaling Corrections to the Critical Two-Dimensional Ising Model on a Torus

We analyze the finite-size corrections to the energy and specific heat of the critical two-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising model on a torus. We extend the analysis of Ferdinand and Fisher to compute the correction of order L^{-3} to the energy and the corrections of order L^{-2} and L^{-3} to the specific heat. We also obtain general results on the form of the finite-size corrections to these quantities: only integer powers of L^{-1} occur, unmodified by logarithms (except of course for the leading logL\log L term in the specific heat); and the energy expansion contains only odd powers of L^{-1}. In the specific-heat expansion any power of L^{-1} can appear, but the coefficients of the odd powers are proportional to the corresponding coefficients of the energy expansion.Comment: 26 pages (LaTeX). Caffeine-derived noble carbons as ball milling-resistant cathode materials for lithium-ion capacitors

    Get PDF
Energy consumption is a growing phenomenon in our society causing many negative effects such as global warming. There is a need for the development of new sustainable materials for energy storage. Carbons are materials derivable from biowaste that can rather easily store energy due to their high conductivity and surface area. However, their large-scale processing is challenging as derived materials can be rather heterogeneous and homogenization requires ball milling, a process that can damage carbons in the process of oxidation. Herein, we have prepared caffeine-derived noble nitrogen-doped carbon that withstands the ball milling process without significant oxidation. Additionally, it performs extraordinarily as a cathode material for lithium-ion capacitors, making it an attractive biowaste-derived alternative to commercial heavy metal cathodes

Limitations on the superposition principle: superselection rules in non-relativistic quantum mechanics

    Get PDF
The superposition principle is a very basic ingredient of quantum theory. What may come as a surprise to many students, and even to many practitioners of the quantum craft, is tha superposition has limitations imposed by certain requirements of the theory. The discussion of such limitations arising from the so-called superselection rules is the main purpose of this paper. Some of their principal consequences are also discussed. The univalence, mass and particle number superselection rules of non-relativistic quantum mechanics are also derived using rather simple methods.Comment: 22 pages, no figure

Determination of the local structure of Sr2x_{2-x}Mx_xIrO4_4 (M = K, La) as a function of doping and temperature

The local structure of correlated spin-orbit insulator Sr2x_{2-x}Mx_xIrO4_4 (M = K, La) has been investigated by Ir L3_3-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements. The measurements were performed as a function of temperature for different dopings induced by substitution of Sr with La or K. It is found that Ir-O bonds have strong covalency and they hardly show any change across the N\'eel temperature. In the studied doping range, neither Ir-O bonds nor their dynamics, measured by their mean square relative displacements, show any appreciable change upon carrier doping, indicating possibility of a nanoscale phase separation in the doped system. On the other hand, there is a large increase of the static disorder in Ir-Sr correlation, larger for K doping than La doping. Similarities and differences with respect to the local lattice displacements in cuprates are briefly discussed.Comment: Main text: 6 pages, 4 figures, Supplemental information: 2 pages, 2 figure

Cation distribution of cobalt ferrite electrosynthesized nanoparticles: A methodological comparison

Final publication at http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jallcom.2017.12.342, © 2017 Elsevier B.V.The present work seeks to analyse the structural and magnetic properties of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles obtained by electrochemical synthesis by high-resolution transmission electronic microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS), neutron diffraction (ND) and SQUID magnetometer. The cationic distribution is analyzed by different techniques. The inversion degree determined by the most accurate measurements was 0.73(1), and the formula for the nanoparticles therefore was (↑Co 0.27 Fe 0.73 )[↓Co 0.73 Fe 1.27 ]O 4 . The magnetic moment found from DC and Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements was 3.8(3) μB, and the coercivity was 7870 Oe at 100 K.This work is supported by the MINECO/FEDER Project MAT2015-67557-C2-2-

Kronecker's Double Series and Exact Asymptotic Expansion for Free Models of Statistical Mechanics on Torus

For the free models of statistical mechanics on torus, exact asymptotic expansions of the free energy, the internal energy and the specific heat in the vicinity of the critical point are found. It is shown that there is direct relation between the terms of the expansion and the Kronecker's double series. The latter can be expressed in terms of the elliptic theta-functions in all orders of the asymptotic expansion.Comment: REVTeX, 22 pages, this is expanded version which includes exact asymptotic expansions of the free energy, the internal energy and the specific hea
