The growth of the service sector in Istanbul since the 1980s may be attributed to the expansion of foreign multinational corporations, transnational banks, growth in international relations, extension of foreign trade and enlargement of business size. Within this process, a need for qualified and user friendly office areas came into existence. This study will investigate the satisfaction and expectations of office tenants in Istanbul office market. The data collected in this study were obtained through a survey of 330 office tenants in Istanbul. The survey was conducted by internet interviews during April 2010 (Sakar, 2010). The results of collected data were compared with the study, What Office Tenants Want, that prepared by ULI/BOMA in 1999. The results of this research have particular policy and planning implications for Istanbul and may stimulate the creation of real estate development in developing user-satisfying and well-equipped office buildings for the city center that respond to the desires and needs of FİRE firms with respect to location and mechanical infrastructure necessitated by the new telecommunications systems.

Optimal passive filter design for effective utilization of cables and transformers under non-sinusoidal conditions

Transformers and cables have overheating and reduced loading capabilities under non-sinusoidal conditions due to the fact that their losses increases with not only rms value but also frequency of the load current. In this paper, it is aimed to employ passive filters for effective utilization of the cables and transformers in the harmonically contaminated power systems. To attain this goal, an optimal passive filter design approach is provided to maximize the power factor definition, which takes into account frequency-dependent losses of the power transmission and distribution equipment, under non-sinusoidal conditions. The obtained simulation results show that the proposed approach has a considerable advantage on the reduction of the total transmission loss and the transformer loading capability under non-sinusoidal conditions when compared to the traditional optimal filter design approach, which aims to maximize classical power factor definition. On the other hand, for the simulated system cases, both approaches lead to almost the same current carrying (or loading) capability value of the cables. © 2014 IEEE.This work is supported by Turkish Republic Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology and BEST Transformers Co. under the project number of 01008.STZ.2011 - 2

Ankara : The Department of Mathematics and the Graduate School of Engineering and Science of Bilkent University, 2012.Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 2012.Includes bibliographical references.Let Hν denote the irreducible representation of the special unitary group SU(n) corresponding to Young diagram ν and let g = su(n) denote the Lie algebra of SU(n). One can show that Hν appears in the symmetric algebra S∗ g if and only if n divides the size of the Young diagram ν. Kostant’s problem asks what is the least number N such that Hν appear in SN g. The moment polytope of the adjoint representation is the polytope generated by the normalized weights ν˜ such that Hν appears in S∗ g and it helps to put lower bounds on number N in the Kostant’s problem. In this thesis, we compute the moment polytope of the adjoint representation of SU(n) for n ≤ 9 using the solutions of the classical spectral problem and so-called ν-representability problem.Sakar, SerkanM.S

A filter design approach to maximize ampacity of cables in nonsinusoidal power systems

    Get PDF
This paper presents an optimal design of the C-type passive filters for the effective utilization of the power cables under nonsinusoidal conditions based on maximization of the harmonic derating factor (HDF) of a power cable, where maintaining the load true power factor at an acceptable range is desired. According to IEEE Standard 519, the total harmonic distortions of the voltage and current measured at the point of common coupling are taken into account as main constraints of the proposed approach. The presented numerical results show that the proposed approach provides higher current carrying capacity, or ampacity of the cables under nonsinusoidal conditions when compared to the traditional approaches based on minimization of the current total harmonic distortion and maximization of the true load power factor. A numerical case study is presented to demonstrate the proposed approach

Safety of peroral sulfadimidine sodium (sulfamethazine) treatment was tested on two chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) groups. Sulfadimidine sodium was administered in drinking water to male chinchillas aged 5.5 to 7.5 months. Concentration of active ingredient in water was 960 and 1600 mg/l, respectively. During the initial five days the animals were drinking non-medicated water and, subsequently, over five consecutive days, water with sulfadimidine sodium. Sulfadimidine sodium, in concentrations of 960 and 1600 mg/l, did not influence the general health status of chinchillas or quality of faeces and body weight during and after the five-day treatment, nor did it influence the quality of fur, clearness of its colour and its density, which were unchanged immediately after the experiment and at 2.5 months post-treatment. This finding can be considered favourable for chinchilla breeders. Consumption of water with dissolved sulfadimidine, in relation to the non-medicated water intake, was reduced by 10% in group 960 mg/l (P>0.05), and by 24% in group 1600 mg/l (P0,05), a u skupini koja je dobivala 1600 mg/l za 24% (P <0,01).

Surface and bulk stresses drive morphological changes in fibrous microtissues

Engineered fibrous tissues consisting of cells encapsulated within collagen gels are widely used three-dimensional in vitro models of morphogenesis and wound healing. Although cell-mediated matrix remodeling that occurs within these scaffolds has been extensively studied, less is known about the mesoscale physical principles governing the dynamics of tissue shape. Here, we show both experimentally and by using computer simulations how surface contraction through the development of surface stresses (analogous to surface tension in fluids) coordinates with bulk contraction to drive shape evolution in constrained three-dimensional microtissues. We used microelectromechanical systems technology to generate arrays of fibrous microtissues and robot-assisted microsurgery to perform local incisions and implantation. We introduce a technique based on phototoxic activation of a small molecule to selectively kill cells in a spatially controlled manner. The model simulations, which reproduced the experimentally observed shape changes after surgical and photochemical operations, indicate that fitting of only bulk and surface contractile moduli is sufficient for the prediction of the equilibrium shape of the microtissues. The computational and experimental methods we have developed provide a general framework to study and predict the morphogenic states of contractile fibrous tissues under external loading at multiple length scales.Published versio

Optimal design of single-tuned passive filters using response surface methodology

    Get PDF
This paper presents an approach based on Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to find the optimal parameters of the single-tuned passive filters for harmonic mitigation. The main advantages of RSM can be underlined as easy implementation and effective computation. Using RSM, the single-tuned harmonic filter is designed to minimize voltage total harmonic distortion (THDV) and current total harmonic distortion (THDI). Power factor (PF) is also incorporated in the design procedure as a constraint. To show the validity of the proposed approach, RSM and Classical Direct Search (Grid Search) methods are evaluated for a typical industrial power system
