Probing the Structure of [NiFeSe] Hydrogenase with QM/MM Computations
The geometry and vibrational behavior of selenocysteine [NiFeSe] hydrogenase isolated from Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough have been investigated using a hybrid quantum mechanical (QM)/ molecular mechanical (MM) approach. Structural models have been built based on the three conformers identified in the recent crystal structure resolved at 1.3 Å from X-ray crystallography. In the models, a diamagnetic Ni2+ atom was modeled in combination with both Fe2+ and Fe3+ to investigate the effect of iron oxidation on geometry and vibrational frequency of the nonproteic ligands, CO and CN-, coordinated to the Fe atom. Overall, the QM/MM optimized geometries are in good agreement with the experimentally resolved geometries. Analysis of computed vibrational frequencies, in comparison with experimental Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) frequencies, suggests that a mixture of conformers as well as Fe2+ and Fe3+ oxidation states may be responsible for the acquired vibrational spectra.DFG, 390540038, EXC 2008: UniSysCatDFG, 414044773, Open Access Publizieren 2019 - 2020 / Technische Universität BerlinEC/H2020/810856/EU/Twin to Illuminate Metals in Biology and Biocatalysis through Biospectroscopy/TIMB
Improvement of the performance of soil-cement mixtures using low cost activators
This paper presents the results of a research study aimed at assessing the effects of using low cost
activators and cement for stabilizing granitic residual soils, concerning the load bearing capacity and the
durability. Results of compressive strength and tensile strength by diametrical compression have been recorded,
aiming at evaluating the mechanical properties, whereas, for the durability, capillary water absorption and the
loss of strength by saturation, of wetting-drying and freeze-thaw cycles, were assessed. In order to improve the
performance of soil-cement mixtures, the effects of the use of low cost activators in small percentages were
analyzed. Results show that the use of cement improves the mechanical performance and the durability of
granite residual soils. Moreover, some of the studied activators significantly improve the mechanical
performance of the mixtures, becoming, thus, a gainful alternative to the increase of the cement content.Center for Advanced Infrastructure Technology - CAIT(University of Mississipi)and International Society for Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport Infrastructure - iSMART
Evaluation of the improvement of residual granitic soils with cement and activators
Enhancing performance of soil-cement mixtures
Cosmological bouncing solutions in f(T,B) gravity
Teleparallel Gravity offers the possibility of reformulating gravity in terms
of torsion by exchanging the Levi-Civita connection with the Weitzenb\"ock
connection which describes torsion rather than curvature. Surprisingly,
Teleparallel Gravity can be formulated to be equivalent to general relativity
for a appropriate setup. Our interest lies in exploring an extension of this
theory in which the Lagrangian takes the form of where T and B are two
scalars that characterize the equivalency with general relativity. In this
work, we explore the possible of reproducing well-known cosmological bouncing
scenarios in the flat Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker geometry using this
approach to gravity. We study the types of gravitational Lagrangians which are
capable of reconstructing analytical solutions for symmetric, oscillatory,
superbounce, matter bounce, and singular bounce settings. These new
cosmologically inspired models may have an effect on gravitational phenomena at
other cosmological scales
General Effective Field Theory of Teleparallel Gravity
We construct the Effective Field Theory (EFT) of the teleparallel equivalent
of general relativity (TEGR). Firstly, we present the necessary field
redefinitions of the scalar field and the tetrads. Then we provide all the
terms at next-to-leading-order, containing the torsion tensor and its
derivatives, and derivatives of the scalar field, accompanied by generic
scalar-field-dependent couplings, where all operators are suppressed by a scale
. Removing all redundant terms using the field redefinitions we result
to the EFT of TEGR, which includes significantly more terms comparing to the
EFT of General Relativity. Finally, we present an application in a cosmological
framework. Interestingly enough, although GR and TEGR are completely equivalent
at the level of classical equations, we find that their corresponding EFTs
possess minor but non-zero differences. Hence, we do verify that at higher
energies the excitation and the features of the extra degrees of freedom are
slightly different in the two theories, thus making them theoretically
distinguishable. Nevertheless, we mention that these differences are suppressed
by the heavy mass scale and thus it is not guaranteed that they could
be measured in future experiments and observations.Comment: 16 pages, comments are welcom
