    Miniaturization of photonic waveguides by the use of left-handed materials

    We propose the use of a left-handed material in an optical waveguide structure to reduce its thickness well below the wavelength of light. We demonstrate that a layer of left-handed material, added to the cladding of a planar waveguide rather than to its core, allows for good light confinement in a subwavelength thin waveguide. We attribute the observed behavior to the change in phase evolution of electromagnetic waves in the guide. This technique can be used for the miniaturization of photonic integrated circuits.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Associations of Adiposity and Diet Quality with Serum Ceramides in Middle-Aged Adults with Cardiovascular Risk Factors

    Rates of adverse cardiovascular events have increased among middle-aged adults. Elevated ceramides have been proposed as a risk factor for cardiovascular events. Diet quality and weight status are inversely associated with several traditional risk factors; however, the relationship to ceramides is less clear. This study aimed to determine associations of adiposity and diet quality with circulating ceramides in middle-aged adults (n = 96). Diet quality was estimated using the Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015). Serum ceramide concentrations were determined by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. A ceramide risk score was determined based on ceramides C16:0, C18:0, and C24:1 and their ratios to C24:0. Participants who were classified as at ‘moderate risk’ compared to ‘lower-risk’ based on a ceramide risk score had significantly higher body mass index (BMI) values, as well as higher rates of elevated fibrinogen levels, metabolic syndrome, and former smoking status. BMI was positively associated with the ceramide C18:0 (R2 = 0.31, p \u3c 0.0001), the ratio between C18:0/C24:0 ceramides (R2 = 0.30, p \u3c 0.0001), and the ceramide risk score (R2 = 0.11, p \u3c 0.009). Total HEI-2015 scores (R2 = 0.42, p = 0.02), higher intakes of vegetables (R2 = 0.44, p = 0.02) and whole grains (R2 = 0.43, p = 0.03), and lower intakes of saturated fats (R2 = 0.43, p = 0.04) and added sugar (R2 = 0.44, p = 0.01) were associated with lower C22:0 values. These findings suggest that circulating ceramides are more strongly related to adiposity than overall diet quality. Studies are needed to determine if improvements in weight status result in lower ceramides and ceramide risk scores

    X-ray diffraction reveals the intrinsic difference in the physical properties of membrane and soluble proteins.

    Membrane proteins are distinguished from soluble proteins by their insertion into biological membranes. This insertion is achieved via a noticeable arrangement of hydrophobic amino acids that are exposed at the surface of the protein, and renders the interaction with the aliphatic tails of lipids more energetically favorable. This important difference between these two categories of proteins is the source of the need for a specific handling of membrane proteins, which transpired in the creation of new tools for their recombinant expression, purification and even crystallization. Following this line, we show here that crystals of membrane proteins display systematically higher diffraction anisotropy than those of soluble proteins. This phenomenon dramatically hampers structure solution and refinement, and has a strong impact on the quality of electron-density maps. A farther search for origins of this phenomenon showed that the type of crystallization, and thus the crystal packing, has no impact on anisotropy, nor does the nature or function of the membrane protein. Membrane proteins fully embedded within the membrane display equal anisotropy compared to the ones with extra membranous domains or fusions with soluble proteins. Overall, these results overturn common beliefs and call for a specific handling of their diffraction data

    A Community-Based School Nutrition Intervention Improves Diet Diversity and School Attendance in Palestinian Refugee Schoolchildren in Lebanon.

    BACKGROUND: School feeding programs have the potential to supply children with healthy school food, alleviate short-term hunger, and improve children's educational outcomes. OBJECTIVES: We linked community kitchens to a subsidized school snack intervention and assessed the impact of this intervention on nutritional (diet diversity, hemoglobin, and anthropometry) and educational (attendance and academic performance) outcomes of Palestinian refugee schoolchildren. METHODS: We collected data from 1362 students (aged 5-15 y) and their parents at baseline, and at an 8-mo follow-up in 2 control and 2 intervention schools. We conducted linear, logistic, and negative binomial regression analyses to assess changes in outcomes of children participating in the intervention schools compared with children in control schools (intention-to-treat). We also assessed the impact of the snack intervention in children who participated ≥50% of the time (HP, high-participation) compared with those who participated <50% (LP, low-participation), or who only received nutrition education (control) (per protocol). All the analyses were adjusted for child age and gender, maternal education, household expenditure, and school-level clustering effect. RESULTS: At endline, there were 648 children in the control group, and within the intervention group, 260 children were LP and 454 were HP. There was a significantly greater increase in overall diet diversity score and dairy consumption in the HP group compared with controls. Both LP and HP groups were more likely to consume proteins, and less likely to consume desserts than controls. Furthermore, the HP group had a significant increase in hemoglobin, and both LP and HP groups had a significant decrease in school absenteeism compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS: This community-based school nutrition intervention had a positive impact on diet diversity, hemoglobin, and school attendance of children

    The highly rearranged mitochondrial genomes of the crabs Maja crispata and Maja squinado (Majidae) and gene order evolution in Brachyura

    Abstract We sequenced the mitochondrial genomes of the spider crabs Maja crispata and Maja squinado (Majidae, Brachyura). Both genomes contain the whole set of 37 genes characteristic of Bilaterian genomes, encoded on both \u3b1- and \u3b2-strands. Both species exhibit the same gene order, which is unique among known animal genomes. In particular, all the genes located on the \u3b2-strand form a single block. This gene order was analysed together with the other nine gene orders known for the Brachyura. Our study confirms that the most widespread gene order (BraGO) represents the plesiomorphic condition for Brachyura and was established at the onset of this clade. All other gene orders are the result of transformational pathways originating from BraGO. The different gene orders exhibit variable levels of genes rearrangements, which involve only tRNAs or all types of genes. Local homoplastic arrangements were identified, while complete gene orders remain unique and represent signatures that can have a diagnostic value. Brachyura appear to be a hot-spot of gene order diversity within the phylum Arthropoda. Our analysis, allowed to track, for the first time, the fully evolutionary pathways producing the Brachyuran gene orders. This goal was achieved by coupling sophisticated bioinformatic tools with phylogenetic analysis

    Au courant computation of the PDB to audit diffraction anisotropy of soluble and membrane proteins.

    This data article makes available the informed computation of the whole Protein Data Bank (PDB) to investigate diffraction anisotropy on a large scale and to perform statistics. This data has been investigated in detail in "X-ray diffraction reveals the intrinsic difference in the physical properties of membrane and soluble proteins" [1]. Diffraction anisotropy is traditionally associated with absence of contacts in-between macromolecules within the crystals in a given direction of space. There are however many case that do not follow this empirical rule. To investigate and sort out this discrepancy, we computed diffraction anisotropy for every entry of the PDB, and put them in context of relevant metrics to compare X-ray diffraction in reciprocal space to the crystal packing in real space. These metrics were either extracted from PDB files when available (resolution, space groups, cell parameters, solvent content), or calculated using standard procedures (anisotropy, crystal contacts, presence of ligands). More specifically, we separated entries to compare soluble vs membrane proteins, and further separated the later in subcategories according to their insertion in the membrane, function, or type of crystallization (Type I vs Type II crystal packing). This informed database is being made available to investigators in the raw and curated formats that can be re-used for further downstream studies. This dataset is useful to test ideas and to ascertain hypothesis based on statistical analysis

    Aging Anxiety and Physical Activity Outcomes among Middle and Older Age African Americans

    Aging is a natural process but may lead to aging anxiety due to physical and mental health changes. Aging anxiety is more prevalent among African Americans compared to Whites. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between aging anxiety, its four constructs including fear of older adults (contact with older adults), psychological concerns (personal/internal issues), physical appearance (physical changes), and fear of loss (loss of autonomy and social relationships), with the different types of physical activity (PA), as well as the attitudes toward PA. A total of 178 African American adults aged 40 years and older completed an online Qualtrics survey. The Lasher and Faulkender survey was utilized for the purposes of obtaining data on aging anxiety. PA was measured using questions derived from the National Health Interview Survey questionnaire and miscellaneous Questions for PA attitudes. The results revealed that fear of loss was the most anxiety-inducing factor among the participants. Females were more fearful of older adults and more anxious about aging than males. Possessing an enjoyable attitude toward PA was associated with less fear of older adults, fewer psychological concerns, and a lower total score of aging anxiety. Physical appearance constructs were correlated with age and strengthening exercises. Younger participants were more worried about their appearance than older participants. Fear of loss was higher among single and lower-income participants. Interventions and mental health programs should consider addressing the fear of loss and promoting a positive attitude toward PA to alleviate aging anxiety among middle-aged and older African Americans

    Relationships of dietary patterns with body composition in older adults differ by gender and PPAR-γ Pro12Ala genotype

    Dietary patterns may better capture the multifaceted effects of diet on body composition than individual nutrients or foods. The objective of this study was to investigate the dietary patterns of a cohort of older adults, and examine relationships of dietary patterns with body composition. The influence of a polymorphism in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) gene was considered. The Health, Aging and Body Composition (Health ABC) Study is a prospective cohort study of 3,075 older adults. Participants’ body composition and genetic variation were measured in detail. Food intake was assessed with a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (Block Dietary Data Systems, Berkeley, CA), and dietary patterns of 1,809 participants with complete data were derived by cluster analysis. Six clusters were identified, including a ‘Healthy foods’ cluster characterized by higher intake of low-fat dairy products, fruit, whole grains, poultry, fish and vegetables. An interaction was found between dietary patterns and PPAR-γ Pro12Ala genotype in relation to body composition. While Pro/Pro homozygous men and women in the ‘Healthy foods’ cluster did not differ significantly in body composition from those in other clusters, men with the Ala allele in the ‘Healthy foods’ cluster had significantly lower levels of adiposity than those in other clusters. Women with the Ala allele in the ‘Healthy foods’ cluster differed only in right thigh intermuscular fat from those in other clusters. Relationships between diet and body composition in older adults may differ by gender and by genetic factors such as PPAR-γ Pro12Ala genotype

    Learning efficacy of explicit visuomotor sequences in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and Asperger syndrome

    Developmental disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Asperger syndrome (AS) are often associated with learning disabilities. This study investigated the explicit learning of visuomotor sequences in 17 ADHD children (mean age 12.1), 21 AS children (mean age 12.7), and 15 typically developing children (mean age: 12.3). The participants were required to explore a hidden sequence of button presses by trial and error and elaborate the learned sequence (2 × 10 task: Hikosaka et al. 1996). The results indicated that although ADHD and AS children had a tendency of repeating the same errors and took longer to complete a sequence, both showed a degree and pattern of improvement in accuracy and speed similar to that of typically developing children. These results suggest that the explicit learning of visuomotor sequence in ADHD and AS patients is largely unimpaired
