AbstractINTRODUCTIONAgenesis of the pubic bone, as evidenced in the world literature, is a very rare clinical and congenital abnormality. Several disorders may occur with hypoplasia of the pubis.PRESENTATION OF CASEHere, we report a rare longer follow-up case of the congenital unilateral agenesis of the superior ramus of pubic bone with bilateral undescended testes, osteoporosis, cranial malformations, acetabular dysplasia, unilateral shortening of the lower extremity and an abnormal gait pattern.DISCUSSIONSomatic mutations may responsible for developmental abnormalities of the mesoderm from which the pubic bones and urogenital structures develop.CONCLUSIONAn isolated x-ray finding of ramus pubis agenesis may associate with cryptorchidism or several other urogenital malformations

    Nanoscale addressing and manipulation of neutral atoms using electromagnetically induced transparency

    We propose to integrate dark-state based localization techniques into a neutral atom quantum computing architecture and numerically investigate two specific schemes. The first scheme implements state-selective projective measurement by scattering photons from a specific qubit with very little cross talk on the other atoms in the ensemble. The second scheme performs a single-qubit phase gate on the target atom with an incoherent spontaneous emission probability as low as 0.01. Our numerical simulations in rubidium (Rb) atoms show that for both of these schemes a spatial resolution at the level of tens of nanometers using near-infrared light can be achieved with experimentally realistic parameters

    We investigated animal and human anthrax cases during a 13-year period in eastern Turkey. From 1992 to 2004, a total of 464 animal and 503 human anthrax cases were detected. Most cases occurred in summer. Anthrax remains a health problem in eastern Turkey, and preventive measures should be taken

    The aim of the present study was to evaluate the findings of endometrial cytology in cows with acute and chronic endometritis. For this purpose samples were collected from 217 Brown Swiss and Holstein cows, housed on the Atatürk University Dairy Research Farm between the years 2010 and 2012, and they were stained with Giemsa for cytological examination. In the evaluation, overall 100 cells were counted in the microscopic area and the cells were classified as polymorph nuclear leukocyte, macrophage, lymphocyte and epithelial cells. The cytopathological classification was done according to the percentages of inflammatory cells. Briefly, 126 (58.06 %) samples had extensive inflammatory cells, and of the uterine samples 91 (41.94 %) had normal exfoliation. According to the cellular density results, acute, and chronic and subacute endometritis were described in 68 (31.33 %), 23 (10.60 %) and 35 (16.13 %) cases, respectively. In conclusion, endometrial cytology was found to be an applicable and reliable diagnostic method in diagnosis and diffentiation of acute and chronic endometritis.

    Mammary tuberculosis – importance of recognition and differentiation from that of a breast malignancy: report of three cases and review of the literature

Abstract

Background

While tuberculosis of the breast is an extremely uncommon entity seen in western populations, it accounts for up to 3% of all treatable breast lesions in developing countries.

Case presentations

We reviewed three female cases of mammary tuberculosis that were diagnosed and treated in Turkey during the same calendar year. All three patients presented with a painful breast mass. In all cases, fine needle aspiration was nondiagnostic for mammary tuberculosis. However, the diagnosis of mammary tuberculosis was confirmed by histopathologic evaluation at the time of open surgical biopsy. All three patients were treated with antituberculous therapy for six months. At the end of the treatment period, each patient appeared to be clinically and radiologically without evidence of residual disease.

Conclusion

The diagnosis of mammary tuberculosis rests on the appropriate clinical suspicion and the histopathologic findings of the breast lesion. Its recognition and differentiation from that of a breast malignancy is absolutely necessary. Antituberculous chemotherapy, initiated immediately upon diagnosis, forms the mainstay of treatment for mammary tuberculosis.</p

    Grade 3C Open Femur Fractures with Vascular Repair in Adults

    Grade 3C open femur fractures are challenging injuries with higher rates of complications. This is a retrospective review of grade 3C open femur fractures with vascular repair between 2002 and 2012. Outcomes included initial MESS score, additional injuries, duration of operation, complications, secondary operations or amputations, and social life implications. Thirty-one of 39 total patients were selected for revascularization and fracture fixation based on soft tissue injury and MESS score. The intra-operative approach included temporary arterial shunt replacement, orthopedic fixation, arterial reconstruction ± venous and/or nerve repair and routine fasciotomies. An external fixation and reverse saphenous vein graft was used in a majority of the patients (respectively; 93.5%, 90.3%). The mean follow up was 5.4 years (range 2.2-10). The decision to amputate versus salvage should be left up to patients and their care teams after discussing options and future possibilities rather than using a scoring system

    Adaptive ride comfort and attitude control of vehicles equipped with active hydro-pneumatic suspension

    In this study, an active suspension for combined ride comfort and attitude control of a vehicle equipped with hydro-pneumatic (HP) suspension system is developed. The state-dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) control is employed in the design of the active suspension controller. A detailed sensitivity analysis is performed to examine the effects of the selection of weighting coefficients on the ride comfort and attitude control. According to the results of the sensitivity study, three different sets of fixed weighting coefficients and a fourth set with adaptive weighting coefficients are developed. The adaptive weighting coefficients are implemented by the state constraint in the SDRE formulation. The controller is tuned mainly for ride comfort at low suspension deflections and for keeping the proper vehicle attitude at higher suspension deflections. Simulation results show that the active suspension with the adaptive weighting is successful in improving both ride comfort and the vehicle attitude

    Non-transverse Electromagnetic fields in micro and nano fibers

    We present an analytical and numerical study of electromagnetic modes in micro and nano fibers (MNFs) where the electric and magnetic fields of the modes are not necessarily orthogonal to each other. We first investigate these modes for different fiber structures including photonic crystal fibers. We then discuss two specific applications of these modes: (1) Generation of hypothetical axions that are coupled to the electromagnetic fields through the dot product of electric and magnetic fields of a mode, EB\vec{E} \cdot \vec{B}, and (2) a new type of optical traps (optical tweezers) for chiral atoms with magneto-electric cross coupling, where the confining potential again is proportional to $\vec{E} \cdot \vec{B}
