This study aims to compare the Introduction section of a number of medical research articles written by non-native speakers of English (Iranian) and English native speakers in terms of their rhetorical structures. The articles published in ISI-indexed journals have been investigated using the models presented by Nwogu and Halliday. The models are related to Moves/Sub-moves and grammatical metaphors, respectively. Using statistical tests such as chi-square tests for goodness of fit and Mann-Whitney U tests, the authors have found that the Iranians used fewer Moves/Sub-moves and grammatical metaphors compared to native speakers. Awareness of this academic writing practice may contribute to pave the ground for Iranian researchers to publish their articles in world-known journals. Keywords: genre, writing, research articles, SFL, ESP, ESL, grammatical metaphors. Background and aims: Withania somnifera (W. somnifera), commonly known as Ashwagandha, is an important medicinal plant that has been used in Ayurvedic and indigenous medicine for over 3,000 years. Candidiasis is one of the most common opportunistic fungal diseases in humans. In fact, the most important fungal disease in women is vaginal candidiasis. This study aimed to investigate the antifungal effects of the extracts of the W. somnifera on Candida albicans (C. albicans). Methods: In this experimental research, 9 vaginal samples were collected using the sterile swap and Falcon tube by the gynecological specialists. The extracts of the shallot and artichoke were prepared using a rotary device. The inhibitory concentration against C. albicans was determined using incubation in media. Results: The results of this study suggested that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against C. albicans, which is equivalent 50 ppm to 250 ppm has the highest concentration of inhibitor. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the antifungal activity of wind cheese against C. albicans is good, so it can be used as a drug to treat infections caused by C. albicans

The development and assessment of a scale to measure the experience of an anorexic voice in anorexia nervosa

The anorexic voice (AV) is defined as a critical internal dialogue which has been implicated in the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Systematic research to explore this further requires a valid and reliable measurement tool. This study aimed to develop and assess the validity of the Experience of an Anorexic VoicE Questionnaire (EAVE-Q). EAVE-Q items were developed and checked for face and content validity through cognitive interviews with seven individuals diagnosed with AN. Participants with a diagnosis of AN (N = 148) completed the EAVE-Q, sociodemographic questions and measures of mood and quality of life to assess internal consistency and construct 3 validity. Forty-nine participants completed the EAVE-Q twice more to assess test-retest reliability. The EAVE-Q had good face and content validity and good acceptability. Principal axis factoring resulted in an 18-item scale organised into five domains with high internal consistency (α = .70 to α = .85). Domains correlated significantly with eating disorder symptoms, psychological distress and quality of life. The EAVE-Q did not discriminate between participants on the basis of body mass index. Test-retest reliability was moderate. Although the factor structure of the EAVE-Q requires replication in other AN samples, the EAVE-Q is the first measure of a critical internal dialogue in AN. It is hoped that it will aid future research to increase understanding of AN and the continued development of person-centred treatments

Self-regulation strategies regarding writing can be referred to as learners’ initiative and self-directed behavior to achieve several goals to foster their writing skills. Based on the three main aspects of scaffolding; contingency, fading, and the transfer of responsibility, this study aimed at delving into the effect of the model of contingent teaching on improving Iranian language learners’ writing self-regulation strategies and its components.  The participants of the study aged between 20-30 included 60 intermediate language learners from a language institute in Tabriz, Iran. The participants were selected based on convenience sampling in the form of four intact classes. Then, they were randomly assigned to two groups: the control and the experimental group. The experimental group was exposed to treatment for 18 sessions. The Questionnaire of English Writing Self-Regulated Learning Strategies (QEWSRLS) was applied to both groups before and after the treatment. The questionnaire was designed as a multifaceted model, consisting of cognition, metacognition, social behavior, and motivational factors. The results of MANCOVA analysis revealed that teaching writing by the model of contingent teaching was influential in improving EFL learners writing self-regulation strategies (F=7.36, p<0.05, Wilks’ Lambda=0.38, Eta Square=0.61). Also, the main effect was exerted on text processing (F=26.4, P<0.05, Eta Square=0.35). The study offers some practical implications for teacher trainers, teachers, and EFL learners which are discussed
