    The impact of subtitled movies on vocabulary development

    Learning new vocabulary compromises a significant factor for success within language learning since without the adequate knowledge of words and their meaning, learners are not able to use the target language efficiently. Moreover, vocabulary tends to be forgotten if it is not acquired and used through the right methods that will provide learners with language inputs in genuine target language environment. In this regard, the increasing access to different multimedia and technology resources facilitate spontaneous vocabulary acquisition for the contemporary age learners. In particular, movies with subtitles can be a great tool in bringing students closer to authentic real life communication vocabulary. As a result, previous studies have found out several benefits of using subtitled movies by confirming that subtitles indeed improve vocabulary development

Hence, in this paper I explore the role of virtual simulations in promoting communicational and collaboration opportunities to non-native speakers of English. In my research, I describe how virtual worlds improve communicative and collaborative skills of non-native speakers of English. Moreover, I investigate how virtual worlds can create a learner centered environment where students take control of their own language production. And third, I explore how the affordances of virtual worlds can enhance non-native English students’ communication and collaboration by engaging them in contextual and authentic environment

    Computers’ impact on students’ writing skills

    Nowadays, technology has become one of the most dominant factors that assist second language learning and teaching process. Thus, its use has become widely spread in classroom settings as it provides a stimulant, interactive and creative learning environment. Particularly, the expansion of technology has brought significant improvements in students’ writing skills. Hence, the main aim of this paper is to explain computers’ impact on students writing, that is to say, how computers assist students in creating more concise and qualitative texts. In order to prove my hypothesis, an experiment was carried out with two groups of first year students, at the South East European University in Macedonia, during a period of one semester. One group of students used computers in their writing process and the other group was exposed to traditional paper and pencil writing by having the teacher as the only source of instruction. The results indicated that students who used computers in their writing process made less spelling and grammar mistakes and made more revisions. In addition, their writings were longer and better organized. Also, by the end of the experiment, students using computers in their writings had a more positive attitude towards writing, in general

In particular, movies with subtitles can be a great tool in bringing students closer to authentic real life communication vocabulary. Previous studies have found several benefits of using subtitled movies by confirming that subtitles indeed improve vocabulary learning. The present research had the aim to confirm these findings by examining the usefulness of subtitles in different settings.  Specifically, to investigate the usefulness of subtitled movies in vocabulary gains, three groups of students were observed in three different conditions, one exposed to movies with interlingual (Albanian) subtitles, one with intralingual (English) subtitles and the third one without any subtitles, to determine which type of subtitles renders the best results. To collect the data, several instruments were administered such as: questionnaires, English proficiency test, direct observation, vocabulary knowledge scale test (VKS) and two movies. The results of this study indicate that interlingual subtitles facilitate better vocabulary acquisition for short and long term memory, specifically when they are shown to students in intentional learning environment, i.e. with the assistance and instructions from the teacher

Hence, in this paper I explored the role of virtual worlds in promoting communicational and collaboration opportunities to non-native speakers of English. In my research, I have described how virtual worlds improve communicative and collaborative skills of non-native speakers of English. Moreover, I have investigated how virtual worlds can create a learner centered environment where students take control of their own language production. And third, I have explored how the affordances of virtual worlds can enhance non-native English students’ communication and collaboration by engaging them in contextual and authentic environment. I have analyzed the data collected at South East European University where I examined the interactions of two groups of undergraduate non-native English students, one in normal classroom setting (where students performed a tour guide role play) and the other one using a virtual world called Second Life (SL) (where students communicated with English native speakers). For this research, I used exploratory research methodology. Through classroom and computer lab observations, audio and video recordings and pre and post study surveys I gathered data that clearly indicate the ways that SL can be used to create opportunities for communication and collaboratio

In order to learn English, as a foreign language, it is suggested that culture as a crucial component should be included in the process of language teaching and learning. This is as a result of the fact that language and culture are two elements that are closely interrelated. Another important factor is that learning a language does not signify having a great command of its vocabulary, grammar, and phonology only, but also to learn the language within cultural framework. Thus, in this paper it will be discussed the role of learning the culture of the target language and the important aspects that can be integrated in such environment. Specifically, this paper will give an overview of the teacher’s role in developing cultural competence as well as suggest strategies that can be integrated in teaching culture in English language classroom
