    UNUSAUAL PRESENTATION OF SUBMANDIBULAR DUCT AND GLAND CALCUI: CASE REPORT

    Sialolithiasis is one of the most common pathologies of the submandibular gland; sialoliths account for about 80 percent of all salivary duct calculi.The majority of sialolith occurs in the submandibular gland or its duct and is common cause of acute and chronic infection. Salivary stones larger than 15 mm are classified as giant sialoliths. They are uncommon in the practice of otolaryngology, and their management has always been a therapeutic challenge. This report presents the two unusual and rare cases of large sialolith of the submandibular duct as well as gland measuring 70x11mm and 54x25mm respectively.

    Magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetotransport properties of RSn_{1+x}Ge_{1-x} compounds (R=Gd, Tb, Er; x=0.1)

    We have studied the magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetotransport properties of RSn1+xGe1-x(R=Gd, Tb, Er; x=0.1) series by means of magnetization, heat capacity and resistivity measurements. It has been found that all the compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic crystal structure described by the centrosymmetric space group Cmcm (No. 63). The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data suggest that all the compounds are antiferromagnetic. Large negative values of {\theta}p in case of GdSn1.1Ge0.9 and TbSn1.1Ge0.9 indicate that strong antiferromagnetic interactions are involved, which is also reflected in the magnetization isotherms. On the other hand ErSn1.1Ge0.9 shows weak antiferromagnetic interaction. The heat capacity data have been analyzed by fitting the temperature dependence and the values of {\theta}D and {\gamma} have been estimated. Among these three compounds, ErSn1.1Ge0.9 shows considerable magnetic entropy change of 9.5 J/kg K and an adiabatic temperature change of 3.2 K for a field of 50 kOe. The resistivity data in different temperature regimes have been analyzed and the dominant contributions have been identified.     While street vendors have provided goods and services to millions at an affordable rate on their doorsteps since time immemorial, erosion of the rural livelihood base, growing informalisation and unabated urbanisation have suddenly increased their numbers in Indian cities in the 1990s. Despite the fact that these workers contribute significantly to the urban economy, they have faced and often continue to experience humiliation, continual harassment, confiscations and sudden evictions. It became imperative to advocate for their rights through the formulation of appropriate policies, the enactment of relevant laws, and the provision of adequate social protection benefits. The National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) played a pivotal and catalytic role in transforming street vendors from non-entities into a formidable force to reckon with. Based on existing published works on the street vendors’ movement in India, a series of key informant interviews and national consultation with stakeholders, the paper aims to document the journey of NASVI in terms of milestones, struggles and successes using the theoretical framework of power resources and capabilities. It also makes an attempt to bring out important lessons for social actors interested in organising informal workers

    HEAT SHOCK PROTEINS: KNOWLEDGE SO FAR AND ITS FUTURE PROSPECTS

    ABSTRACTHeat shock proteins (HSPs) are one of the most versatile classes of molecules which regulate cellular homeostasis. In 1960, Ritossa accidentally raisedthe incubation temperature of Drosophila fly and found an increased gene transcription of certain unknown proteins, which he named HSPs. Furtherstudies explored that HSPs, being expressed at low levels under normal conditions, act as molecular chaperones, which fold, assemble, localize,secrete, and translocate cellular proteins. Moreover, their expression is markedly induced in response to various stresses such as an exposure ofcells to heavy metals, nitric oxide, ischemia, microbial infection, antibiotics, and hormones. The literature has been thoroughly investigated, and thepresent review summarizes the complex role of HSPs in gastric disorders, neurological disorders, apoptosis, cancer, etc. Expression of HSPs by cellshas important physiological or pathological implications.     A REVIEW ON PHYTOSOMES: NOVEL APPROACH FOR HERBAL PHYTOCHEMICALS

      The poor oral bioavailability of polyphenolic compound can be enhanced through the incorporation of them into phospholipid based self-assembled delivery system, i.e. popularly known as phytosome. Phyto†means plants and some†resembles a covering around/or a structure. Phytosome is generally prepared by reacting one or two moles of polyphenolic phytoconstituents and phospholipid. It may be either in the ratio of 1:1 and 1:2. By using phytosomes, one can also achieve enhanced rate and extent of the passage of lipophilic herbal constituents across lipid membrane that explains its character as a carrier as well as acid labile herbal drugs could also be protected in gastrointestinal tract. There are number of products available in the market that contains phytosomal drug delivery system such as Ginkgo biloba, Silybum marianum, and Camellia sinensis.     BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases affecting millions worldwide. The currently available anti-TB drugs and vaccines have proved insufficient to contain this scourge, necessitating an urgent need for identification of novel drug targets and therapeutic strategies. The disruption of crucial protein-protein interactions, especially those that are responsible for virulence in Mycobacterium tuberculosis – for example the ESAT-6:CFP10 complex – are a worthy pursuit in this direction. METHODS: We therefore sought to improvise a method to attenuate M. tuberculosis while retaining the latter’s antigenic properties. We screened peptide libraries for potent ESAT-6 binders capable of dissociating CFP10 from ESAT-6. We assessed the disruption by a peptide named HCL2, of the ESAT-6:CFP10 complex and studied its effects on mycobacterial survival and virulence. RESULTS: We found that HCL2, derived from the human cytochrome c oxidase subunit 3 (COX3) protein, disrupts ESAT-6:CFP10 complex, binds ESAT-6 potently, disintegrates bacterial cell wall and inhibits extracellular as well as intracellular mycobacterial growth. In addition, an HCL2 expressing M. tuberculosis strain induces both Th1 and Th17 host protective responses. CONCLUSIONS: Disruption of ESAT-6:CFP10 association could, therefore, be an alternate method for attenuating M. tuberculosis, and a possible route towards future vaccine generation

    Association of Intronic Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) of CALM 1 gene with Osteoarthritis of the Knee in Indian Population: A Case-control Study

    Osteoarthritis knee is one of the most prevalent disorders in the Indian subcontinent. The wide prevalence and varying features makes it a disease of disguise. Multiple etiological factors have been described. The most recent is genetic contribution in the causation of the disease. This case control study was conducted in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, CSM Medical University, Lucknow in collaboration with IIT, Kanpur. 120 cases and 120 controls were enrolled. Clinico-radiological features were noted and symptomatic clinical scoring was done. Genetic polymorphism in relation to intronic region of CALM 1 gene was studied by DNA extraction, Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) method. Statistical analysis was done using Stata software. There was no significant difference between age, sex and BMI among cases and controls (p value > .05). ESR (p value =0.0000), fasting blood sugar (p value= 0.0004) and serum uric acid (p value=0.0001) were significantly different among cases and controls. SNP was found in significantly higher number in cases than controls (p value = .0022). Heterozygosity was found only in 5 cases. Logistic regression has also proved significant association of occurrence of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) with disease. CALM-1 gene intronic SNP (rs3213718) is present in Indian population. Occurrence of this SNP is significantly affecting the disease

    GLOBAL REGULATORY ASPECTS OF WOUND CARE AND BURN DRESSINGS

    Objective: The objective of the study was to present an overview of regulatory requirements for wound and burn care dressings.Methods: A total of 80 research and review articles including regulatory guidelines to control the marketing of wound and burn care dressings recommended by international regulatory agencies were reviewed.Results: A wide range of dressings, as a new target of the healing process, have been developed due to continued growth and innovations in the field. Ideal dressings should be safe and achieve healing at a reasonable cost with minimum inconvenience to patients. It is mandatory that manufacture and sale of such dressings are approved by the relevant health authority of each country. This article provides manufacturers with an overview regarding regulatory approval procedures for marketing such dressings in different countries and addresses the gaps and challenges in the existing guidelines aimed at maintaining product quality. It provides a comparative analysis of the differences in regulatory requirements and highlights that ongoing discussions and appropriate actions are required to support the continuous development of these dressings. Most countries have their own regulatory guidelines, and the approval processes differ according to the country. Quality parameters concerning the type of material, pore size, sterilization methods, shape and size, and labeling are not discussed in guidelines; therefore, innovators and manufacturers are facing tough challenges to showcase their products in the market, and this further leads to either lack of market availability or high cost of such dressings.Conclusion: Development of common quality guidelines is essential for market availability of low-cost, high-quality dressings
