    Effect of frequency of static stretching on flexibility, hamstring tightness and electromyographic activity

    We compared the effect of the number of weekly repetitions of a static stretching program on the flexibility, hamstring tightness and electromyographic activity of the hamstring and of the triceps surae muscles. Thirty-one healthy subjects with hamstring tightness, defined as the inability to perform total knee extension, and shortened triceps surae, defined by a tibiotarsal angle wider than 90° during trunk flexion, were divided into three groups: G1 performed the stretching exercises once a week; G2, three times a week, and G3, five times a week. The parameters were determined before and after the stretching program. Flexibility improved in all groups after intervention, from 7.65 ± 10.38 to 3.67 ± 12.08 in G1, from 10.73 ± 12.07 to 0.77 ± 10.45 in G2, and from 14.20 ± 10.75 to 6.85 ± 12.19 cm in G3 (P < 0.05 for all comparisons). The increase in flexibility was higher in G2 than in G1 (P = 0.018), while G2 and G3 showed no significant difference (G1: 4 ± 2.17, G2: 10 ± 5.27; G3: 7.5 ± 4.77 cm). Hamstring tightness improved in all groups, from 37.90 ± 6.44 to 29 ± 11.65 in G1, from 39.82 ± 9.63 to 21.91 ± 8.40 in G2, and from 37.20 ± 6.63 to 26.10 ± 5.72° in G3 (P < 0.05 for all comparisons). During stretching, a statistically significant difference was observed in electromyographic activity of biceps femoris muscle between G1 and G3 (P = 0.048) and G2 and G3 (P = 0.0009). No significant differences were found in electromyographic activity during maximal isometric contraction. Stretching exercises performed three times a week were sufficient to improve flexibility and range of motion compared to subjects exercising once a week, with results similar to those of subjects who exercised five times a week.FAPES

    Effect of image resolution manipulation in rearfoot angle measurements obtained with photogrammetry

    The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of image resolution manipulation on the photogrammetric measurement of the rearfoot static angle. The study design was that of a reliability study. We evaluated 19 healthy young adults (11 females and 8 males). The photographs were taken at 1536 pixels in the greatest dimension, resized into four different resolutions (1200, 768, 600, 384 pixels) and analyzed by three equally trained examiners on a 96-pixels per inch (ppi) screen. An experienced physiotherapist marked the anatomic landmarks of rearfoot static angles on two occasions within a 1-week interval. Three different examiners had marked angles on digital pictures. The systematic error and the smallest detectable difference were calculated from the angle values between the image resolutions and times of evaluation. Different resolutions were compared by analysis of variance. Inter- and intra-examiner reliability was calculated by intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC). The rearfoot static angles obtained by the examiners in each resolution were not different (P > 0.05); however, the higher the image resolution the better the inter-examiner reliability. The intra-examiner reliability (within a 1-week interval) was considered to be unacceptable for all image resolutions (ICC range: 0.08-0.52). The whole body image of an adult with a minimum size of 768 pixels analyzed on a 96-ppi screen can provide very good inter-examiner reliability for photogrammetric measurements of rearfoot static angles (ICC range: 0.85-0.92), although the intra-examiner reliability within each resolution was not acceptable. Therefore, this method is not a proper tool for follow-up evaluations of patients within a therapeutic protocol

    In this paper, a dynamical and eletromyographical (EMG) analysis were applied to study a gymnastics movement, the backward roll to handstand. In order to improve and combine technical knowledge and biomechanical description and analysis of sport movements, dynamical approaches have been developed in this sense. Two trained subjects performed this movement. In the EMG analysis, bi-polar surface electrodes were used on the motor point of right m.gluteus maximus and m.triceps suralis and full wave rectification of signal stook place. In the Dynamical analysis, a strain gauges force plate was used to collect the signals of vertical and horizontal ground reaction force (GRF) during the backward roll, and the impulse to handstand. An A/D convertor that simultaneously interfaced the two signals to a computer was employed. The frequency rate for both procedures was 750 Hz. The description of the vertical GRF showed two different peaks during the execution of the backward roll until handstand. These two peaks are related to the extension of hip and lower limb, and the extension of the elbow and flexion of the shoulder. The EMG signals demonstrated a different time duration of muscular activation. In fact, postural corrections of body position during the movement may maintain a high muscular activation. A performance evaluation of sport movements is important to improve technical knowledge and to provide accurate biomechanical methodologies to permit the description, analysis and evaluation of sport movements

    Decreased muscle strength is associated with proinflammatory cytokines but not testosterone levels in men with diabetes

    The aim of this study was to compare muscle strength in male subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) with and without low plasma testosterone levels and assess the relationship between muscle strength, testosterone levels, and proinflammatory cytokines. Males (75) aged between 18 and 65 years were divided into 3 groups: control group that did not have diabetes and had a normal testosterone plasma level (>250 ng/dL), DnormalTT group that had DM2 with normal testosterone levels, and the DlowTT group that had DM2 and low plasma testosterone levels (<250 ng/dL). The age (means±SD) of the groups was 48.4±10, 52.6±7, and 54.6±7 years, respectively. Isokinetic concentric and isometric torque of knee flexors and extensors were analyzed by an isokinetic dynamometer. Plasma testosterone and proinflammatory cytokine levels were determined by chemiluminescence and ELISA, respectively. Glycemic control was analyzed by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C). In general, concentric and isometric torques were lower and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β plasma levels were higher in the groups with diabetes than in controls. There was no correlation between testosterone level and knee torques or proinflammatory cytokines. Concentric and isometric knee flexion and extension torque were negatively correlated with TNF-α, IL-6, and HbA1C. IL-6 and TNF-α were positively correlated with HbA1C. The results of this study demonstrated that muscle strength was not associated with testosterone levels in men with DM2. Low muscle strength was associated with inflammatory markers and poor glycemic control

    Goniometria dos membros torácicos e pélvicos de ovinos em duas faixas etárias

    O trabalho teve por objetivo comparar os valores goniométricos das articulações dos membros torácicos e pélvicos em ovinos da raça Santa Inês em duas faixas etárias (jovens e adultos). Foram utilizados 30 ovinos hígidos, fêmeas, divididos em dois grupos: Grupo 1 com 15 animais jovens (idade entre 6 e 12 meses), Grupo 2 com 15 animais adultos (entre 3 e 6 anos). Foram aferidas a máxima flexão, a máxima extensão e calculou-se a amplitude de movimento das articulações, direita e esquerda, dos membros torácicos (ombro, cotovelo e carpo) e pélvicos (coxofemoral, joelho e tarso), com o emprego de um goniômetro universal de plástico. Cada articulação foi aferida em triplicata por dois avaliadores com o animal em estação. Não foram detectadas diferenças estatísticas entre as médias em ambos os lados, entre os avaliadores ou entre os grupos. Foi possível assim concluir que, em ovinos hígidos, os valores goniométricos não foram influenciados pela idade

São discutidos aspectos relacionados à fundamentação metodológica da avaliação do movimento humano; aspectos históricos; e as perspectivas da aplicação dos conhecimentos de natureza biomecânica para a prática profissional na Educação Física e no Esporte. No que se refere às aplicações profissionais, especial ênfase é dada aos esforços objetivando a otimização do desempenho esportivo, a detecção de soluções para promover a qualidade de vida, e o controle das lesões.The paper discusses the context of biomechanics as an academic discipline that composes the body of knowledge of Physical Education and Sports. This review discusses methodological aspects related to the basis of evaluation of human movement, historical aspects, and perspectives of applying knowledge of biomechanics to the nature of professional practice in Physical Education and Sport. Concerning to professional applications, particular emphasis is given to efforts aiming at the optimization of sports performance, the detection of solutions to improve the quality of life, and the control of injuries
