    The cosmic evolution of radio-AGN feedback to z=1

    This paper presents the first measurement of the radio luminosity function of 'jet-mode' (radiatively-inefficient) radio-AGN out to z=1, in order to investigate the cosmic evolution of radio-AGN feedback. Eight radio source samples are combined to produce a catalogue of 211 radio-loud AGN with 0.5<z<1.0, which are spectroscopically classified into jet-mode and radiative-mode (radiatively-efficient) AGN classes. Comparing with large samples of local radio-AGN from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the cosmic evolution of the radio luminosity function of each radio-AGN class is independently derived. Radiative-mode radio-AGN show an order of magnitude increase in space density out to z~1 at all luminosities, consistent with these AGN being fuelled by cold gas. In contrast, the space density of jet-mode radio-AGN decreases with increasing redshift at low radio luminosities (L_1.4 < 1e24 W/Hz) but increases at higher radio luminosities. Simple models are developed to explain the observed evolution. In the best-fitting models, the characteristic space density of jet-mode AGN declines with redshift in accordance with the declining space density of massive quiescent galaxies, which fuel them via cooling of gas in their hot haloes. A time delay of 1.5-2 Gyr may be present between the quenching of star formation and the onset of jet-mode radio-AGN activity. The behaviour at higher radio luminosities can be explained either by an increasing characteristic luminosity of jet-mode radio-AGN activity with redshift (roughly as (1+z) cubed) or if the jet-mode radio-AGN population also includes some contribution of cold-gas-fuelled sources seen at a time when their accretion rate was low.     Trust reality-mining: evidencing the role of friendship for trust diffusion

    Value sensitive design is driven by the motivation of making social and moral values central to the development of ICT systems. Among the most challenging concerns when imparting shared values like accountability, transparency, liberty, fairness and trust into information technology are reliable and comprehensive formal and computational models of those values. This paper, educated by trust theories and models from cognitive science, social sciences and artificial intelligence, proposes a novel stochastic computational model of trust, encapsulating abstractions of human cognitive capabilities and empirically evidenced social interaction patterns. Qualitative and quantitative features of trust are identified, upon which our formal model is phrased. Reality mining methods are used to validate the model based on a real life community dataset. We analyze the time-varying dynamics of the interaction and communication patterns of the community, consider varying types of relationships as well as their symmetry. Social network data analysis shows that our model better fits the evolved friendships compared to a well designed synthetic trust model, which is used as the baseline.</p

    Engineering Executable Agents Using Multi-Context Systems

    In the area of agent-based computing there are many proposals for specific system architectures, and a number of proposals for general approaches to building agents. As yet, however, there a very few attempts to relate these together, and even fewer attempts to provide methodologies which relate designs to architectures and then to executable agents. This paper provides a first attempt to address this shortcoming. We propose a general method of specifying logic-based agents, which is based on the use of multi-context systems, and give examples of its use. The resulting specifications can be directly executed, and we discuss an implementation which makes this direct execution possible

    No dependence of radio properties of brightest group galaxies on the luminosity gap

    We study the radio and optical properties of the brightest group galaxies (BGGs) in a sample of galaxy groups from the SDSS DR7. The luminosity difference between the BGG and the second ranked galaxy in the group (known as the luminosity, or magnitude, gap) has been used as a probe for the level of galaxy interaction for the BGG within the group. We study the properties of BGGs with magnitude gaps in the range 0-2.7 magnitudes, in order to investigate any relation between luminosity gap and the radio properties of the BGG. In order to eliminate selection biases, we ensure that all variations in stellar mass are accounted for. We then confirm that, at fixed stellar mass, there are no significant variations in the optical properties of the BGGs over the full range of luminosity gaps studied. We compare these optical results with the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulations and find broad consistency with the observational data. Using EAGLE we also confirm that no trends begin to arise in the simulated data at luminosity gaps beyond our observational limits. Finally, we find that, at fixed stellar mass, the fraction of BGGs that are radio-loud also shows no trends as a function of luminosity gap. We examine how the BGG offset from the center of group may affect the radio results and find no significant trend for the fraction of radio-loud BGGs with magnitude gap in either the BGG samples with greater or less than 100kpc offset from the center of group.Comment: Accepted for publication in A

    Improving keratoconus management with central corneal regularization and corneal collagen cross-linking protocol treatment

    Purpose. To evaluate safety and efficacy of customized central corneal regularization (CCR), together with simultaneous accelerated corneal collagen cross-linking (A-CXL) - CCR-CXL protocol, to treat keratoconus-related corneal ectasia. Design. Retrospective, comparative observational case series. Methods. Patients that had undergone combined CCR-CXL protocol. Main inclusion criteria were keratoconus visual acuity deterioration and contact lens intolerance. All patients underwent complete ophthalmological evaluation, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and Scheimpflug-corneal tomography. Central corneal regularization was performed by ablation using flying spot laser. Subsequently, the stroma was saturated with 0.17% riboflavin-5-phosphate added every 2 minutes, followed by A-CXL 9 mW/cm2 for 10 minutes. CDVA, medium keratometry value (Kmed), and total corneal morphological irregularity index (CMI) of patients were analyzed before surgery and after 1, 3 and 12 months. A P value of.05 or less was considered statistically significant. Results. 46 eyes of 39 keratoconus patients were treated. At 1 month, the mean CDVA (LogMar) increased from 0.19 ± 0.02 to 0.12 ± 0.02 (P &lt; .05), and the difference remained stable at month 12. Kmax decrease was statistically significant from 57.02 ± 5.65 to 50.21 ± 4.48 (P &lt; .05). CMI decreased significantly from 47.8 ± 2.84 to 30.1 ± 2.4 (P &lt; .01). Conclusions. CCR-CXL protocol is safe and effective in arresting keratectasia progression and increasing corneal optic regularity in keratoconus. These findings showed a significant improvement in CDVA, keratometry values and corneal optical aberrations after being treated with the CCR-CXL protocol. Copyright © Società Editrice Universo (SEU

    soft robotic manipulation of onions and artichokes in the food industry

    This paper presents the development of a robotic solution for a problem of fast manipulation and handling of onions or artichokes in the food industry. The complete solution consists of a parallel robotic manipulatior, a specially designed end-effector based on a customized vacuum suction cup, and a computer vision software developed for pick and place operations. First, the selection and design process of the proposed robotic solution to fit with the initial requeriments is presented, including the customized vacuum suction cup. Then, the kinematic analysis of the parallel manipulator needed to develop the robot control system is reviewed. Moreover, computer vision application is presented inthe paper. Hardware details of the implementation of the building prototype are also shown. Finally, conclusions and future work show the current status of the project

    Influence of ABO locus on PFA-100 collagen-ADP closure time is not totally dependent on the von willebrand factor. Results of a GWAS on gait-2 project phenotypes

    (1) Background: In a previous study, we found that two phenotypes related to platelet reactivity, measured with the PFA-100 system, were highly heritable. The aim of the present study was to identify genetic determinants that influence the variability of these phenotypes: Closure time of collagen-ADP (Col-ADP) and of collagen-epinephrine (Col-Epi). (2) Methods: As part of the GAIT-2 (Genetic Analysis of Idiopathic Thrombophilia (2) Project, 935 individuals from 35 large Spanish families were studied. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) with ≈ 10 M single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was carried out with Col-ADP and Col-Epi phenotypes. (3) Results: The study yielded significant genetic signals that mapped to the ABO locus. After adjusting both phenotypes for the ABO genotype, these signals disappeared. After adjusting for von Willebrand factor (VWF) or for coagulation factor VIII (FVIII), the significant signals disappeared totally for Col-Epi phenotype but only partially for Col-ADP phenotype. (4) Conclusion: Our results suggest that the ABO locus exerts the main genetic influence on PFA-100 phenotypes. However, while the effect of the ABO locus on Col-Epi phenotype is mediated through VWF and/or FVIII, the effect of the ABO locus on Col-ADP phenotype is partly produced through VWF and/or FVIII, and partly through other mechanisms
