Activity Recognition Using Gazed Text and Viewpoint Information for User Support Systems
The development of information technology has added many conveniences to our lives. On the other hand, however, we have to deal with various kinds of information, which can be a difficult task for elderly people or those who are not familiar with information devices. A technology to recognize each person’s activity and providing appropriate support based on that activity could be useful for such people. In this paper, we propose a novel fine-grained activity recognition method for user support systems that focuses on identifying the text at which a user is gazing, based on the idea that the content of the text is related to the activity of the user. It is necessary to keep in mind that the meaning of the text depends on its location. To tackle this problem, we propose the simultaneous use of a wearable device and fixed camera. To obtain the global location of the text, we perform image matching using the local features of the images obtained by these two devices. Then, we generate a feature vector based on this information and the content of the text. To show the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we performed activity recognition experiments with six subjects in a laboratory environment
Fidelity-Controllable Extreme Image Compression with Generative Adversarial Networks
We propose a GAN-based image compression method working at extremely low
bitrates below 0.1bpp. Most existing learned image compression methods suffer
from blur at extremely low bitrates. Although GAN can help to reconstruct sharp
images, there are two drawbacks. First, GAN makes training unstable. Second,
the reconstructions often contain unpleasing noise or artifacts. To address
both of the drawbacks, our method adopts two-stage training and network
interpolation. The two-stage training is effective to stabilize the training.
Moreover, the network interpolation utilizes the models in both stages and
reduces undesirable noise and artifacts, while maintaining important edges.
Hence, we can control the trade-off between perceptual quality and fidelity
without re-training models. The experimental results show that our model can
reconstruct high quality images. Furthermore, our user study confirms that our
reconstructions are preferable to state-of-the-art GAN-based image compression
model. The code will be available.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figure
Automatic Discrimination between Scomber japonicus and Scomber australasicus by Geometric and Texture Features
This paper proposes a method for automatic discrimination of two mackerel species: Scomber japonicus (chub mackerel) and Scomber australasicus (blue mackerel). Because S. japonicus has a much higher market price than S. australasicus, the two species must be properly sorted before shipment, but their similar appearance makes discrimination difficult. These species can be effectively distinguished using the ratio of the base length between the dorsal fin’s first and ninth spines to the fork length. However, manual measurement of this ratio is time-consuming and reduces fish freshness. The proposed technique instead uses image processing to measure these lengths. We were able to successfully discriminate between the two species using the ratio as a geometric feature, in combination with several texture features. We then quantitatively verified the effectiveness of the proposed method and demonstrated that it is highly accurate in classifying mackerel
Multiple Visual-Semantic Embedding for Video Retrieval from Query Sentence
Visual-semantic embedding aims to learn a joint embedding space where related
video and sentence instances are located close to each other. Most existing
methods put instances in a single embedding space. However, they struggle to
embed instances due to the difficulty of matching visual dynamics in videos to
textual features in sentences. A single space is not enough to accommodate
various videos and sentences. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that
maps instances into multiple individual embedding spaces so that we can capture
multiple relationships between instances, leading to compelling video
retrieval. We propose to produce a final similarity between instances by fusing
similarities measured in each embedding space using a weighted sum strategy. We
determine the weights according to a sentence. Therefore, we can flexibly
emphasize an embedding space. We conducted sentence-to-video retrieval
experiments on a benchmark dataset. The proposed method achieved superior
performance, and the results are competitive to state-of-the-art methods. These
experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed multiple
embedding approach compared to existing methods.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Lymphatic Dysfunction Impairs Antigen-Specific Immunization, but Augments Tissue Swelling Following Contact with Allergens
The lymph transports tissue-resident dendritic cells (DCs) to regional lymph nodes (LNs), having important roles in immune function. The biological effects on tissue inflammation following lymphatic flow obstruction in vivo, however, are not fully known. In this study, we investigated the role of the lymphatic system in contact hypersensitivity (CHS) responses using k-cyclin transgenic (kCYC+/-) mice, which demonstrate severe lymphatic dysfunction. kCYC+/- mice showed enhanced ear swelling to both DNFB and FITC, as well as stronger irritant responses to croton oil compared with wild-type littermates. Consistently, challenged ears of kCYC+/- mice exhibited massive infiltrates of inflammatory cells. In contrast, DC migration to regional LNs, drainage of cell-free antigen to LNs, antigen-specific IFN-γ production, and lymphocyte proliferation were impaired during the sensitization phase of CHS in kCYC+/- mice. Transfer experiments using lymphocytes from sensitized mice and real-time PCR analysis of cytokine expression using challenged ear revealed that ear swelling was enhanced because of impaired lymphatic flow. Collectively, we conclude that insufficient lymphatic drainage augments apparent inflammation to topically applied allergens and irritants. The findings add insight into the clinical problem of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis that commonly occurs in humans with peripheral edema of the lower legs
Paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic records through Marine Isotope Stage 19 at the Chiba composite section, central Japan: A key reference for the EarlyeMiddle Pleistocene Subseries boundary
Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 19 is an important analogue for the present interglacial because of its similar orbital configuration, especially the phasing of the obliquity maximum to precession minimum. However, sedimentary records suitable for capturing both terrestrial and marine environmental changes are limited, and thus the climatic forcing mechanisms for MIS 19 are still largely unknown. The Chiba composite section, east-central Japanese archipelago, is a continuous and expanded marine sedimentary succession well suited to capture terrestrial and marine environmental changes through MIS 19. In this study, a detailed oxygen isotope chronology is established from late MIS 20 to early MIS 18, supported by a U-Pb zircon age and the presence of the Matuyama–Brunhes boundary. New pollen, marine microfossil, and planktonic foraminiferal δ18O and Mg/Ca paleotemperature records reveal the complex interplay of climatic influences. Our pollen data suggest that the duration of full interglacial conditions during MIS 19 extends from 785.0 to 775.1 ka (9.9 kyr), which offers an important natural baseline in predicting the duration of the present interglacial. A Younger Dryas-type cooling event is present during Termination IX, suggesting that such events are linked to this orbital configuration. Millennial- to multi-millennial-scale variations in our δ18O and Mg/Ca records imply that the Subarctic Front fluctuated in the northwestern Pacific Ocean during late MIS 19, probably in response to East Asian winter monsoon variability. The climatic setting at this time appears to be related to less severe summer insolation minima at 65˚N and/or high winter insolation at 50˚N. Our records do not support a recently hypothesized direct coupling between variations in the geomagnetic field intensity and global/regional climate change. Our highly resolved paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic records, coupled with a well-defined Matuyama–Brunhes boundary (772.9 ka; duration 1.9 kyr), establish the Chiba composite section as an exceptional climatic and chronological reference section for the Early–Middle Pleistocene boundary.ArticleQuaternary Science Reviews 191: 406-430(2018)journal articl
Differences among epitopes recognized by neutralizing antibodies induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19 vaccination
SARS-CoV-2 has gradually acquired amino acid substitutions in its S protein that reduce the potency of neutralizing antibodies, leading to decreased vaccine efficacy. Here, we attempted to obtain mutant viruses by passaging SARS-CoV-2 in the presence of plasma samples from convalescent patients or vaccinees to determine which amino acid substitutions affect the antigenicity of SARS-CoV-2. Several amino acid substitutions in the S2 region, as well as the N-terminal domain (NTD) and receptor-binding domain (RBD), affected the neutralization potency of plasma samples collected from vaccinees, indicating that amino acid substitutions in the S2 region as well as those in the NTD and RBD affect neutralization by vaccine-induced antibodies. Furthermore, the neutralizing potency of vaccinee plasma samples against mutant viruses we obtained or circulating viruses differed among individuals. These findings suggest that genetic backgrounds of vaccinees influence the recognition of neutralizing epitopes
