Born to win?:Testing the fighting hypothesis in realistic fights: Left-handedness in the Ultimate Fighting Championship
Given the heritability of human left-handedness and its purported associations with fitness-lowering traits, the persistence of the minority of left-handedness in human populations is an evolutionary puzzle. The fighting hypothesis proposes that these negative fitness costs are offset by fitness gains for left-handers when involved in fights with right-handers, as being a minority would generate a surprise effect increasing the chance of winning. The finding that left-handers are overrepresented in many combat sports is interpreted as evidence for this hypothesis. However, few studies have examined sports that show good similarity with realistic fights and analysed winning chances in relation to handedness of both fighters. We examined both, in a sample of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a fierce fighting sport hardly constrained by rules. Left-handers were strongly overrepresented as compared to the general male population but no advantage for left-handers when facing right-handers was found, providing only partial evidence for the fighting hypothesis. Knowledge-Based Synthesis of Distributed Systems Using Event Structures
To produce a program guaranteed to satisfy a given specification one can
synthesize it from a formal constructive proof that a computation satisfying
that specification exists. This process is particularly effective if the
specifications are written in a high-level language that makes it easy for
designers to specify their goals. We consider a high-level specification
language that results from adding knowledge to a fragment of Nuprl specifically
tailored for specifying distributed protocols, called event theory. We then
show how high-level knowledge-based programs can be synthesized from the
knowledge-based specifications using a proof development system such as Nuprl.
Methods of Halpern and Zuck then apply to convert these knowledge-based
protocols to ordinary protocols. These methods can be expressed as heuristic

Parental Height Differences Predict the Need for an Emergency Caesarean Section
More than 30% of all pregnancies in the UK require some form of assistance at delivery, with one of the more severe forms of assistance being an emergency Caesarean section (ECS). Previously it has been shown that the likelihood of a delivery via ECS is positively associated with the birth weight and size of the newborn and negatively with maternal height. Paternal height affects skeletal growth and mass of the fetus, and thus might also affect pregnancy outcomes. We hypothesized that the effect of newborn birth weight on the risk of ECS would decrease with increasing maternal height. Similarly, we predicted that there would be an increase in ECS risk as a function of paternal height, but that this effect would be relative to maternal height (i.e., parental height differences). We used data from the Millennium Cohort Study: a large-scale survey (N = 18,819 births) with data on babies born and their parents from the United Kingdom surveyed 9 to 12-months after birth. We found that in primiparous women, both maternal height and parental height differences interacted with birth weight and predicted the likelihood of an ECS. When carrying a heavy newborn, the risk of ECS was more than doubled for short women (46.3%) compared to tall women (21.7%), in agreement with earlier findings. For women of average height carrying a heavy newborn while having a relatively short compared to tall partner reduced the risk by 6.7%. In conclusion, the size of the baby, the height of the mother and parental height differences affect the likelihood of an ECS in primiparous women
A novel pathogenic MLH1 missense mutation, c.112A > C, p.Asn38His, in six families with Lynch syndrome
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>An unclassified variant (UV) in exon 1 of the <it>MLH1 </it>gene, c.112A > C, p.Asn38His, was found in six families who meet diagnostic criteria for Lynch syndrome. The pathogenicity of this variant was unknown. We aim to elucidate the pathogenicity of this <it>MLH1 </it>variant in order to counsel these families adequately and to enable predictive testing in healthy at-risk relatives.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied clinical data, microsatellite instability and immunohistochemical staining of MMR proteins, and performed genealogy, haplotype analysis and DNA testing of control samples.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The UV showed co-segregation with the disease in all families. All investigated tumors showed a microsatellite instable pattern. Immunohistochemical data were variable among tested tumors. Three families had a common ancestor and all families originated from the same geographical area in The Netherlands. Haplotype analysis showed a common haplotype in all six families.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We conclude that the <it>MLH1 </it>variant is a pathogenic mutation and genealogy and haplotype analysis results strongly suggest that it is a Dutch founder mutation. Our findings imply that predictive testing can be offered to healthy family members. The immunohistochemical data of MMR protein expression show that interpreting these results in case of a missense mutation should be done with caution.</p
A curvilinear effect of height on reproductive success in human males
Human male height is associated with mate choice and intra-sexual competition, and therefore potentially with reproductive success. A literature review (n = 18) on the relationship between male height and reproductive success revealed a variety of relationships ranging from negative to curvilinear to positive. Some of the variation in results may stem from methodological issues, such as low power, including men in the sample who have not yet ended their reproductive career, or not controlling for important potential confounders (e.g. education and income). We investigated the associations between height, education, income and the number of surviving children in a large longitudinal sample of men (n = 3,578; Wisconsin Longitudinal Study), who likely had ended their reproductive careers (e.g. > 64 years). There was a curvilinear association between height and number of children, with men of average height attaining the highest reproductive success. This curvilinear relationship remained after controlling for education and income, which were associated with both reproductive success and height. Average height men also married at a younger age than shorter and taller men, and the effect of height diminished after controlling for this association. Thus, average height men partly achieved higher reproductive success by marrying at a younger age. On the basis of our literature review and our data, we conclude that men of average height most likely have higher reproductive success than either short or tall men
Qual a direção da convergência na produtividade da mão de obra na agropecuária de Minas Gerais?
O presente estudo tem como objetivo investigar se existiu um processo de convergência da produtividade da mão de obra no setor agropecuário mineiro, ao longo do período de 1970 a 2006, e em que regiões agropecuárias de baixa produtividade estariam reduzindo o hiato existente em relação às regiões agropecuárias de alta produtividade. Para tal finalidade, desagregou-se o estado em municípios e, como metodologias de teste, utilizaram-se densidades de distribuição e um processo estacionário de primeira ordem de Markov, em sua versão discreta. Os resultados demonstram que as distribuições de produtividade dos municípios sofreram um deslocamento de massa para a esquerda, indicando piora na produtividade, e que sua dinâmica de evolução apresentou um processo de convergência em direção a classes inferiores de produtividade
